To Tell the Truth 9/77 - Garry Moore's last episode - Part 3

- Instead of playing a second game, Garry explains to everyone everything they needed to know about his absense, his retirement, and who's gonna take over as host of the show. Quite sentimental, if you ask me.
DISCLAIMER: Nothing you see here is my property.
Garry Moore was a brilliant communicator and a genuinely nice man, two qualities in shorter and shorter supply in broadcasting generally. How wonderful to see him exit on his own terms.
Garry Moore was a legend in his own time!
Garry Moore was my favorite gameshow host. Loved his humor!
Gary Moore lived another 15 years dying in 1993 at the age of 78.
Classy set of people on this episode. Impossible to find today.
I love this Version of TTTT. I watch it often on Buzzr… classy and they don’t make them like this any more
Yes. Bill was 70 when he passed away while Garry was 79. Sad that neither is no longer with us. In fact the only person of the five who still is with us is Joe Garagiola who is 86 now. Kitty did live to be almost 97 though which is quite an achievement.
You missed Orson Bean who just died this year.
Joe lived to be 90, he passed in 2016. Peggy Cass passed in 1999 at age 74. Kitty passed in 2007.
Both heavy smokers, all are dead.
Bill Cullen lived to 80, not 70: 1920 - 2000
@@ADAMSIXTIESOrsen Bean died in a traffic accident at 91
Even though I'm 61, I only learned about the great Garry Moore this last year. He really was a presence on television.
UA-cam is a real gem. I was an avid viewer of To Tell the Truth and The Garry Moore and never found out until now why he disappeared from the airwaves. Thanks UA-cam!
Gary Moore was the best at doing this show and plus he started Carol Burnett out.
Yes! I recall that as a kid!
Garry Moore always seemed like a very nice gentleman.
nice to know that he lived many years in satisfactory retirement.
thanks for uploading this poignant epsisode.
Emphysema....what a horrible way to go. Same with Johnny Carson. Way to go Winston et al.
i taped this episode when it aired on GSN a few years back, along with 2 episodes from 1967 which were guest hosted by Mark Goodson himself. truly nostalgic, especially since GSN probably won't ever show them again unfortunately. i also have an episode from 1968,also taped off GSN that was guest hosyed bt the late Bert Convy, another true lost traesure.
Gary Moore was the host of the syndicated "To Tell the Truth" from 1969 until 1975. Joe Gardriola took over the following Monday and continued in syndication until 1980 or 1981. Gary started as a host of "I've Got A Secret" before he came to this show.
+Musicradio77 Television Network The Moore-Garagiola version ended in 1978, and TTTT returned for the 1980-81 season with Robin Ward as host.
It was a great gameshow. Ought to be returned.
I think that if you have to go then this is the best way to do it and even announcing your replacement that’s the way to go
The final episode of "What's My Line" was taped in December of 1974 and didn't air until the spring of 1975. They had no idea they would be canceled at the time of the final taping.
I agree no need to demean Joe Garagiola. He was always a professional announcer and one of the best baseball broadcasters of all time. But, Garry Moore was a wonderful performer. So professional, humerous, humble, a true gentlemen. A great host of To Tell the Truth. Also, must acknowledge dry humor and wit of the Great Bill Cullen.
🚬👱🏻♂️🥃 JOE GARAGIOLA WAS A 💡 BULBOUS BULB 💡 HEAD NOT TO MENTION A BUTTHEAD.
Garry's version of "TTTT" is my favorite of all of them, even better than Bud Collyer's since Garry really seemed to be interested in the guests. I think Robin Ward's version flopped because it came too soon after Garry/Joe's ended and the comparisons were inevitable.
As for Bill Cullen, he might have become the new host, but Gil Fates, in his book about "What's My LIne?," said that "Bill's superlative gamesmanship was missed on the panel." Somehow I suspect the real reason is implied below: Bob Stewart wouldn't let him host a second syndicated show ("$25,000 Pyramid").
Garry was as comfortable as an old shoe and almost irreplaceable; tell me, do you think Steve Allen did a better job as host of "I've Got A Secret"? In this meaner, more cynical age, there doesn't seem to be room for his type. More's the pity.
Joe didn't host for too long, as the show was cancelled in 1978. Robin Ward was 2 years later, but yes, there were some changes. The 1980 TTTT set looked like a disco with all those lights. The clamshell reveals were kinda nice. Panel was a mix, as there were no regulars, but we did get to see Kitty, Bill, and even Polly Bergen for the first time in a while. Robin Ward was bland but not horrible. One on One was a bit confusing, but a decent side game for TTTT. Perhaps what killed this show was Robin's lack of chemistry with the panel.
www.imdb.com/name/nm0601225/?ref_=nmbio_bio_nm#actor Garry would live to age 88 ND DIE IN 1993 from emphysema. Like many in his generation, advertised and smoked cigarettes on I've Got A Secret. This farewell on the syndicated To Tell The Truth is touchingly rare opportunity to say so long. RIP
Stage manager Joe Disco was name dropped here; he also worked on SNL for more than 20 years.
Todd Newton should have gotten "The Price Is Right" when Bob Barker retired. Todd has spent the last few years traveling the country doing the TPIR.
This was a classy exit but horribly sad. Did you notice that Gary wasn’t ipresent at the end when the contestants and the girls came out? I would assume it just was too emotional..
I’d forgotten all about Joe Garagiola hosting TTTT. But by then, I was exiting my early - mid teens and my game show years, transitioning to University as well as ignoble pursuits away from the TV.
My "top-ten" UA-cam videos list, is getting so crowded! I've been enjoying, "iGAS" shows I was too young, to have viewed.(sending Mr. Moore, to "Birdland"-in an interesting manner was great fun!)I loved the '60s four Ts. Finally, I loved the '60s theme! R.I.P., Garry(with two "r"s)and, Bill and, all.
This is Gary's last regular tv appearance.
Never a big Garry Moore fan but a classy farewell none the less RIP
Cigarettes did him in. Him and a lot of others in that era.
people are now vaping..........as if that nonsense is any better .
Bud Collyer...THE best!
Neither Gary Moore nor Joe Garagiola could hit a good curve ball. But Joe did earn a World Series ring.
the camera operators should have been on the credits without them its a radio show
Chain smoking got him... too bad.
Well, I wonder if the big problem with Bill hosting was the fact he was already hosting another syndicated game show, namely "The $25,000 Pyramid". Given it was a Bob Stewart show, I doubt Bill could contractually do it. Someone needs to help me with that.
Actually the story Bill Cullen told was that he was offered the job first, but preferred to stay on the panel. He thought he could be funnier as a panelist.
According to Wikipedia, Goodson and Toddman thought he lost his chemistry with the other panelist as Host, so it went to Joe.
You can tell that Poor Gary's voice is raspy..he was suffering from cancer...hence he had to leave the show.
How many 62-year-old people would be skateboarding?
(BTW, that's how old Garry Moore was at the time)
He was kidding.
For an older woman I think Kitty Carlisle was hot
@johnissoevil I believe Garry Moore didn't mention cancer because one of his prior TV shows may have been sponsored by a cigarette company.
Loved the sense of humor he displayed in this segment.
His own show and IGAS were both sponsored by Winston for pretty their entire runs.
The real McCoy!!
guys wait a minute Joe Garagiola is a new host!
I think Robin Ward and Lynn Swann would be worse on the totem pole than O'Hurley.
If you can hear Gary's voice, he sounds a little hoarse due to throat cancer in his throat.
"spaghetti-bender"? Who are you, The Grand Wizard of Wrestling?
@msk7046 What did you think about his hosting of $trike it Rich?
Joe was fine on Strike it Rich, especially considering what he was working with. Besides the Q&A, the rest of the game was "hit a button, hope to win a prize"... okay it worked with PYL, but that was because of the numerous animated Whammies.
@BARNEYSFATWALT, actually, Garry died in '93.
it was the fifties. you didn't have to then.
Garry's voice sounds raspy. Unless I've missed something, is that related
to his eventual passing?
Yes; I think his cigarette smoking was starting to catch up with him, hard.
In this video footage, Moore stated that he had a "no-no" on his throat (throat cancer). It took him a lot of voice therapy after his throat surgery to get in good enough shape to go out in front of a TV camera again. Garry Moore was still a constant smoker, and continued to smoke until his death in 1993.
He seemed under the influence, slurred his words. Problem with alcohol ?
Eugene Sedita His cancer surgery affected his speech. He had subsequent surgeries and if you watch his appearance on Sally Jessy Raphael in 1990, he talks about it and his speech is more affected.
Why?
Moore felt that he was living on borrowed time. He felt that he was approaching the end of his life, and he wanted to enjoy as much of it as his health would allow him to. Garry Moore lived another 16 years, before he died in 1993. Also, by 1977, Garry Moore had been working in radio and television for 40 years. That fact also played a role in his decision to retire.
To ME, Garry Moore was THE host of TTTT - not that sphegetti-bender that replaced him. He was AWFUL between TTTT and hosting sporting games, I disliked everything about him.
Wow that slur aged well @msk7046
Don’t hold back. Tell us how you really feel! 😂😂😂😂
when people still had some class.....
