Who knew that the video with the least amount of views on this subject would be the breakthru to fully understanding the rectangular government system? Thank you!
Thank you so much, I am studying for my exam and did not fully understand this until watching your video. Thank you for breaking this down and making the material so easy to understand.
This was the BEST EXPLAINED VIDEO!! I’ve looked at so many and just couldn’t understand what in the world they were talking about ! It’s like they expect you to follow along so quickly but I loved the way you broke everything down and included the amounts of acres and all that it really made so much sense thank you so much!
This is is awesome! I am helping out with mentoring of Science Olympiad Road Scholar event for the first time this year. You turned something complicated into something so simple. By the way, I love the references regarding Thomas Jefferson. It made me laugh out loud. Thanks for posting.
The sections were numbered that way so that no two sections with the same number would touch each other. Also the townships on each side know section numbers would be the same next to each other. That is why they are numbered in that manner
I live in New England and i envy folks whose land is surveyed and defined w the Jeffersonian system. My property is "beginning at a point adjacent to the Smith farm, formerly Johnson, then proceeding generally south west along a rock wall 231 feet and some inches to a steel pipe set in a boulder, then crossing a wood road 12 feet 8 inches to the east to a rock..."
Michael, I’m new to surveying, I haven’t taken any math courses in well over 20 years. Do you have any pointers, advice or words of encouragement for someone in their early 40’s who’s wanting to get into the field. I’m totally green and I’m unsure of what to expect. Are there any areas that I should be exceedingly strong in? Any advice helps.
Almost done with a bachelor's in surveying. Trigonometry is big in surveying and brushing up on algebra for manipulating equations would be helpful too. I think if you end up loving surveying like a lot of people do you'll be shocked that the math comes a lot easier when you work it in a surveying scenario than other ways you may have used it in the past. Good luck
Thank you for this video. It was a great explanation and added value to the teeny tiny bit I learned on my own. Do you have any video on how to read the coordinates? I tried contacting a county Planner, but haven't heard back. I can read the coordinates for simple aliquots of sections, but when it starts to have quarters of quarters of quarters of NE or whatever, I get lost.
Just a quick question, what exactly is the meaning of "accuracy" on a theodolite manual. To be specific the Futtura Dt10 states accuracy 20" 10" it was written exactly like that with a couple of spaces between 20 and 10.. thats mostly feet they are referring to right?
I worked for a land surveyor as a CAD Tech for several years. The best thing to do is find a picture of a section or a quarter section on the web to breakdown how to understand a property description. Getting a picture with a definition makes all the difference in the world. When I was new at it, took a little practice but it's really not that difficult.
I think there is an error at 16:18 min. you say section 8 is T3S when it's actually T2S. Can you please Clarify ? I'm starting from the baseline calculating up. Also for Section 23 isn't it T1N ? Section 35 seems correct .. please answer cause now I'm completely confused.
I'm about a 1/4 mile from what I'm told is a survey corner Intersection, I have bare property and the county WON'T give me a physical address, the neighbors on my north & south side have a address but the numbers are far apart, I'm told the 911 address are determined somehow in FEET from the corner intersecting point, is there a WAY to find out my actual 911 address in case I need to call 911 while doing work alone on the property? The county emphatically WON'T give me a 911 address
How many acres are in following legal description E 1/2 of SW 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Section 23 40 acres? 160 acres? 10 acres? 20 acres? Video you have, 19 minutes and 8 second long, why didn't you go over the major description?
You said Jefferson was a communist, then you said he thought the land could be divided into family farms independent of government. Your rationale is way off man. Or else your definition of communist is. Great explanation other than that.
As a Native American, the way that I easily remember that section numbers curve back and forth on the township is to remind myself that Thomas Jefferson was a snake.
good information. But calling Thomas Jefferson a communist and a monster is a bit much. Not only is the communist label wildly incorrect and flat out wrong, but even the monster label is coming at it out of context. Everyone agrees slavery is wrong and inexcusable, but labels like 'monster' are probably best saved for people like Stalin, Hitler, Guevara, Tito, Hussein. Applying 'Monster' to Jefferson trivializes what real monsters are. I'm not a fan of Jefferson, but empirically was no communist. Even avowed communists do not assert that Jefferson was a communist. They can cherry pick some traits or comments that are similar to communist theory, but he was never a communist of any sort. Clearly, you know your stuff about PLSS which I found really helpful. But the 'monster' and 'communist' labels are extremely wrong. Nonetheless. Thank you for this explanation.
I’m not studying anything or buying anything. I’m just some guy trying to give a hydro company directions to his house. All these websites and “explanations” that require you to have at least a base knowledge of the field before even knowing where to copy paste a few numbers from is soooooo unnecessarily complicated and annoying.
The sections within a township are numbered in an unconventional, Boustrophedon pattern, in which alternating rows are numbered in opposite directions, starting from section 1 in the northeast corner and ending with section 36 in the southeast corner. Therefore, section 13 is adjacent to the eastern range line of the designated township. Numbering in this pattern ensures that numerically sequential sections within the same township are physically adjacent and share colinear boundaries.
Mr. Pesses, just teach the material, please don't include your personal opinions of people during instruction. It negates all the good from your presentation. When talking to geographers about California's physical features do you also tell them about how horrible the state of California was to Chinese immigrants during the railroad and gold rush years, and how they treated the immigrants like slaves. I bet you don't include that, do you?
It doesn't sound too bad to include those things. Like I can understand why that teaching style might not work for you, but including some personal opinions or tangential storytelling can help people stay engaged and remember things.

that was great information but I also got a headache from it, Thank you for being so detailed. You laid it out so easy for me.
I'm studying for my real estate exam, this helped me TREMENDOUSLY . Thank you!
Great explanation! 74 and I can still learn things! I was trying to understand a survey map on some land I purchased .
This is is awesome! I am helping out with mentoring of Science Olympiad Road Scholar event for the first time this year. You turned something complicated into something so simple. By the way, I love the references regarding Thomas Jefferson. It made me laugh out loud. Thanks for posting.
omg me too
you are AMAZING!! this helped me soooooo much!! I M STUDYING FOR MY EXAM and this is the best explanation ever!
this dudes hilarious and taught this very well. likes up from me!
Thank you for making and uploading this video. You explained it so clearly and now I have a much better understanding of how this system works.
Wow, you're a good teacher!
Thank you, Michael...that was an exceptional video.
thank you so much! this video was absolutely clutch for studying for my upcoming Science Olympiad Road Scholar event.
Thank you so much for explaining! Best explanation ever!
OMG thank you so much for this explanation, I was completely lost in this chapter
You're a really good teacher! That was so helpful!!!
The sections were numbered that way so that no two sections with the same number would touch each other. Also the townships on each side know section numbers would be the same next to each other. That is why they are numbered in that manner
Thanks 🙏, it was very useful… great explanation 👍
Thank you so much, you helped me understand this for my real estate exam
Thank you so much!!!!!! You explained it so well. I didn't understand until now thanks to you.
Thank you for explaining this super in-depth!
Thank you so much for this video. It cleared many concepts up for me
excellent video, thank you!
Awesome professor

That was a wonderful video, nice explanation it’s helping me out to remember.
Me too
Jefferson was a genius.
This was really helpful!!! Thank you!!!
Omg U explained it so well. Thank you for helping me

Thomas Jefferson great man Surveyor ...
As well as
Founding Father of The United States of🇺🇸 America 🇺🇸 🙌
i get confused by the N1/2 of the NE1/4 of the SW 1/4 and the SE 1/4 of the NW 1/4

It’s easy when you learn to work your way back.
Does minutes relate to the bearing of the line? Or the distance???

Very well explained!
Thank you so much Guruji!
This is great! Thank you so much
Thank you!
How do you figure out the area?
Where does calculus fit into surveying?
Range lines run North East, so wouldn't Range be 4 and township line 3?
Thank you×1,000,000
Showing this video to the next land owner that asks me what I’m doing
Michael is the goat
Great video and explanation, ya dig!!!!!!!!?

Give latitude and longitude coordinates that is how they can find you
Thank you

what about blocks? what are blocks?
Sir i have a few questions about survey sketchs
thank you sir

Your rationale is way off man.
Or else your definition of communist is.
Great explanation other than that.
The second part is confusing because how is it t3s, r2e the same for all sections ?
It's a zoomed in view, every section 1 through 36 are all within the larger section T3S R2E
I thought tiers were left to right and range lines were north to south
THANK YOU SO MUCHHHH I DIG =)
🙏
I want a lot in Waterloo
As a Native American, the way that I easily remember that section numbers curve back and forth on the township is to remind myself that Thomas Jefferson was a snake.
Now I understand manifest destiny, not enough squares for everyone
I'm great with the video, but impugning the image of the great Thomas Jefferson...I hope that was tongue-in-cheek....
I can tell your a teacher who actually cares about his students. People like you deserve nothing but good karma.

It snakes bc you're walking it.
Give me metes and bounds any day
From a Va. LS
You actually mean Leaps and Bounds...!

@@aarushprasad4493 Aw, who hurt you bro?
Why you calling yourself dummy front of many viewers?
Pretty idiotic comments on TJ.
Stick to what you understand.
C’on man!

You can drop the white hate.
Sorry but everyone owning land can't be called communism. Otherwise great video.....thank you.
Thank you!
Thank you
