FFS is why I don't fish tournaments anymore. It's lame and it, unfortunately, works too well. Nobody is really fishing anymore and the co-anglers get screwed.
FFS should not be used in any competitions in my opinion. It’s cool for fishing for fun with friends and family and maybe during practice. But comes competition day should come off the boat.
I’ve been watching Bassmaster since it started and refuse to watch it now unless it’s a shallow water pattern. I used to get up at 5AM on weekends when I was a kid to watch Roland Martin, Jimmy Houston and Bill Dance. My dad would holler at me from his bedroom to turn the volume down because Jimmy was laughing and he couldn’t sleep.
I use side view to locate structure and fish, set a waypoint and cast to the area. I catch plenty of fish and I'm not staring at a screen while casting. I've used FFS, it's ok, but for me as a hobby fisherman it's not worth the cost.
All the money advertisers throw into these guys would beg to differ. I agree with your point partially, but a lot of the already minor viewership, is not watching like they used to. Also guys who are in it for the "Money" are doing nothing to further the sport into something larger. Yet these kayak saltwater guys dont use anything more than a small garmin gps/fish finder. I love watching it, and its pushing to get placed on the Olympics next time around..
Like you, I have ffs on my kayak. To me, this video is kinda proving that you don't need to use it all the time. It's up to the anglers how and when . Million and 1 minnow baits, Million and 1 worms.
Like many aspects of life, technology advancements water down the richness of the experience. Would you say that ffs helps with any techniques other than open water fishing? Can’t imagine it could help much if you’re fishing thick cover along a bank.
It's like hunting with a armed drone. See 'em, get 'em and reap the rewards without effort of skills. It's like building a kit house from an online vendor and all you have to connect part A with part B, etc.

I'm torn. I like it as a way to confirm what I think I already know. I'm not a fan of the staring at the screen and "teasing the cats" until they hit a lure.
Hank hasn’t competed since the 90s, he’s been all about his TV show and new podcast (which is really good by the way) since. I don’t think KVD needed to but because of how involved with Humminbird he has been when they brought out each new piece of tech he was probably all in from the time they started developing it. Remember he was also the guy who brought us the Hydrowave…he’s not scared at all by the tech side of fishing
Nothing beats and is more thrilling than spending a weekend watching the back of some dudes neck while he bobs up and down on the front of a boat staring at a computer screen for hours on end catching fish in a brush pile with the same lure over, and over, and over again… actually, it’s fukn ridiculous! I canceled my BASS membership and stopped watching college and professional bass fishing years ago! Me and my daughter now enjoy spending the weekend watching paint dry!
The cost of FFS with all the huge 18" screens is crazy for the average hobbiest. Electronics are more expensive than the boat itself. Can't compete with the guys that go all out on tech.

I just had a conversation today about this with the coworker. How it ruined fishing. I’m an old-school fishing kind of guy. “Fishing with Bill Dance today stuff..” sorry for the username. It’s my daughter’s UA-cam account.
There is no doubt that from a viewers standpoint, I only watch short segments of tournament coverage that is domintated by FFS techniques. I prefer watching the competitors using techniques and fishing the types of cover and structure that I do simply because I can visualize myself making the same presentation, anticipating the strike and landing the fish. Since I don't own an FFS unit and haven't used one it's not the same.
I have FFS on my boat. I have it mainly for finding structure more than fish. I don't do a bunch of off shore stuff so it's subjective. Now I do alot of crappie fishing and it helps alot. Dragging for catfish it's great for seeing fish in the strike area but I don't sit on fish. I see some pros like Latimer, Daniel's that haven't abandoned blind casting. Milliken definitely changed the game. Damian has it also but he's a natural stick. Good topic though.

I am more excited to use my ffs chasing striper on the delta. Yeah it is fun to have when they bite but also a pain when they don’t. You could waste a lot of time on fish that won’t bite just like a bed fish.
They need to do some in depth studdies on what it does to fisheries, if its affecting fish populations it should be outlawed like throwing dynamite in the lake. There seems to be so many anglers now days and it would be an attrocity if ffs affected fish populations. Its seems unfair to the fish we all love to play with, let them have thier hiding spots where they arent constantly molested. Its thier lake, let them have a little privacy.
When I turn on a tournament and see 4 boats on a community hole, all staring at a screen at their feet. I turn it off and watch cartoons. If a tournament is at Okeechobee I know they'll be topwater fishing or punching. That's something I'll watch.
When people suck at fishing and you come up with a way easier way for them to catch fish then it’s a no brainer they will spend the money and use it. My friend who bank fishes asked me how come I have a boat and fishing rods that are in the $700 dollar range but don’t have ffs or even a fish finder? I told him I enjoy figuring out how to find and catch fish without electronics consistently. That’s how you know you know what you are doing 😉
I think watching fishing is boring, but catching is another thing. Without FFS you showed only catches. I don’t care either way. The fish will eventually adapt. I want it just for efficiency and for learning bass behavior. Good topic though. If everyone fishes FFS I’ll have the shallow fish all to myself.
Hank Parker had it completely right when he said that front forward facing sonar is ruining the sport of bass fishing.... It Has taken away Value of earning knowledge of the water that you are fishing... It has taken away the mystery... Not to mention it is just too expensive for everyone to afford and the ones that are suffering because of that are the high school tournament fishermen... Not all parents can't afford it.. So the parents that can't afforded those kids are at a disadvantage.... Because when you can see a fish under a dock, nearly a hundred feet away and you can see if the fish reacts to your bait or not, is an advantage over the kids that don't have it.. It allows you to eliminate dead water efficiently. Especially around docks, because we all know not all docks are created equal.. If you have fished in discovery bay, you know exactly what i'm talking about...😂... But on a serious note, bassmaster and major league fishing should consider the viewers at home... Because honestly, watching a guy stare down at his units all day long and not interacting with the viewers, it's just a really bad experience...

I learned how to read the water and season. I think this is better in the long run if the SHTF happened.

Bass fishing is not a spectator sport, that's why anglers pay to enter tournaments. There has never been large viewership.

I’d like to try on the lakes I fish but am not planning on buying a system anytime soon. Bass fishing is still awesome…even without it.
I 100% agree with you. The only way I can see it changing is if viewership drops on tournaments. Then the rules might possibly be changed.

Everyone would rather watch top water action. However FFS is the way of the future and has a place in fishing.

I've commented this on other's channels, but FFS needs to be its own division of bass fishing as in, have normal bass fishing and then a FFS division.

was watching bassmaster elite series this weekend... everyone just watching their ffs was boring and i didnt watch for very long for that reason

FFS is hard to watch. They eliminated A-rig. Might need to do same for ffs and TV ratings.
