What is legal to tow a car in the UK. Lets say from an auction to your home. I was thinking of a trailer. But being so big they are hard to store. Are towing dollys legal or do all 4 wheels need to be off the road.??????

You sure mate because to be legal. i was told that the car your towing must have 4 wheels off the road. But if your towing on a dolly the car your towing must have tax,insurance and a current MOT.
these type of a-frame`s [ un-braked ] are no longer legal in the uk . the law states if your towing something its classes as a trailer , therefor it goes of the weight of the trailer / car .. trailers + load have to be under 750 kg 3/4 ton [to have no braking on trailer] anything over 750 kg has to have brakes fitted . so basically theres not many cars under 750 kg now , so there all illegal non . thay do a kit that brakes the car with a seprate booster / cable [ some electric ] . the AA don't use them any more and the little cars behind the motorhomes use a braking system [ie cable / electric ] shame really used one many times and thay wear ok . I don't think a lot of coppers know the law on these as I still see them being used occasionally but I bet the DSA / VOSA do ATB JOHN

You failed to mention that these are illegal to use except for emergency recovery.
