  • Old Perithia (Greek Περίθεια ) is a village on the Greek island of Corfu, which was listed as a historical monument in 1996. The place is located in the northeast of Corfu at the foothills of the Pantokrator.
The first written records of Old Perithia date back to the 14th century. However, it is assumed that Perithia was inhabited much longer. In its heyday, Perithia was one of the most prosperous places on the island and had up to 1200 inhabitants. There were about 130 houses and eight churches.
The location of the town at about 450 meters originally offered protection against pirate attacks and malaria, which was rampant on the coast at the time. Cattle breeding was an important branch of the economy, other agriculture was mainly only possible on fields in the lower lying coastal region. In the 19th century there were hardly any pirate raids anymore and more and more people spent the winter on the coast and only the malarial summer months in Palea Peritheia. The town was gradually abandoned in the 1960s after the risk of malaria had been banned on the Greek islands and tourism offered jobs on the coasts.
In the heart of Corfu Island, on the hills surrounding the island, there is a hidden village whose history dates back to the 13th century. Old Perithia is a true cultural gem that enchants tourists with its charm, history, and traditional Greek way of life.
Old Perithia is one of the oldest settlements in Corfu. It is located in the mountainous part of the island, about 20 kilometers from the city of Corfu. Due to its location and difficult access, the village was isolated for many years, which preserved its original character and atmosphere.
Walking through the village, you can admire beautiful stone houses, narrow cobbled streets, and picturesque landscapes surrounding the village. Many of the houses have been restored in recent years, preserving their original architecture and traditional elements.
Old Perithia also has several restaurants that offer delicious Greek cuisine and local specialties. You can try goat meat, famous feta and kefalotyri cheeses, as well as homemade wine.
One of the main reasons why tourists visit Old Perithia is its history. The village is known for its cultural heritage, and its history can be learned in the local museum. The museum displays many exhibits related to the life and culture of the village, including agricultural tools, folk costumes, and historical photographs.
It is also worth visiting the nearby churches, which are historic and architecturally significant landmarks. The most important churches in Old Perithia are the Church of St. James and the Church of St. Luke, both built in the Byzantine style.
Old Perithia is an ideal place for those who are looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and want to experience the spirit of traditional Greek way of life. The village is not only beautiful but also rich in history and culture. It is a place that will surely stay in the memory of anyone who decides to visit this charming island.
