A case for the G whistle: Our bouzouki player is thrilled whenever tunes are centred around G, because that gives him the greatest bass punch (tuned GDAD), as opposed to a guitarist playing DADGAD or drop-D. So we put this lovely set together: Da Day Dawn (Dm instead of Am), O’Rourke’s (A-part Dmix, B-part Amin instead of Amix/Emin) and Spike Island Lasses (Gmix/Gmaj instead of Dmix/Dmaj). Works great on the G whistle of course, and everyone’s merry.
I just wanna say, as someone who LOVES to research, I am SO glad this channel exist. I saw your tik tok comparing the higher end whistles, and it sent me down a rabbit hole for 2 days strait. Your videos are so high quality and entertaining and it’s strange such a quality channel exist for such a niche topic. I bought a Clark sweet tone and if I take to it how I’m expecting I will I’ll quickly upgrade but just wanted to share my gratitude for this awesome channel thanks man!
I play Strayaway Child on the G whistle. It allows for the lower notes that you can't get on the D whisle (but also makes some higher notes more challenging).
I recently received a set of D, E and E flat from Gary and they are simple wonderful! I promptly ordered another set of A, B flat and C from him. Thanks for always giving solid and honest reviews. I enjoy your videos very much.
Hi I am a new subscriber to your channel and I am very happy to have found you. I started my whistle journey just a day or two ago and have been watching and following your channel. I really enjoy your reviews, advice, your masterful playing and especially your honesty and down to earth demeanor. I just received my first beginner whistle today from Amazon, the Clarke, Celtic and I like it a lot and have enjoyed playing on it all day, but I already feel like I should upgrade to and invest in what you consider to be the sweet spot price range for quality whistles, the $100+ range. Your past videos compared the brands, Killarney, Lir, and Gary Humphrey which were in that price category. I like the sound of all 3 whistles pretty much equally, but the Lir brand offers a deal I just can't ignore. A complete set of all 5 whistles in key of A, Bb, C, D, and Eb for under $500. I know how much you lean toward the Gary Humphrey brand and I completely understand as his whistles sound amazing. I wish I could afford them but his pricing is well beyond my current means and he seems to have a long waiting list and he doesn't accept CC, only money orders and wire transfers which I don't feel comfortable with. Maybe one day I will be lucky enough to own some of his whistles if I can come into some money, his waiting list isn't too long, and he finally accepts CC. Until that time, I will order from Lir who are more affordable, easier to purchase from, and have a short wait time, all while still getting excellent craftsmanship I can be proud of.
Enjoyed your review...I've been playing whistle (along with Irish flute) seriously for the last couple of years. I had several D whistles and low D whistles, and my first non-D whistle was a G (a Tony Dixon). As Senior hiker stated in his comment, this is an in-between whistle, and I really like its range for certain tunes. I play it less than my D whistles, but I definitely like it for more than one tune! Also, as a recorder player, I could easily adapt to the fingering since it is similar to the F recorder (just as the D whistle is similar to the C recorder). At some point I do want to get whistles in other keys, and I'll check out Humphrey.
I was thinking the fingering on a g whistle would be the same as my d and my low d. My idea was it would be an between whistle. Having major problems with the pipers grip on my low d. I love the low sound of a low whistle. Can't consistently cover and get clean notes on the low d. I thought the g would help but if I can't use the same fingerings as the d whistle I would be useless to me at this stage of my development. I not leaning towards Irish fast tunes. More into slow Irish like Danny Boy or Slan le Maigh. I don't feel I'm progressing still practicing the same songs and mistakes over an over. You mention one time that another tudor could help me at this time. Who do you recommend Sean?
I have started playing a decent amount of old-time fiddle tunes, and find myself wishing I had a G whistle for those tunes that go all the way down to the open G string on the fiddle.
A very pleasant sounding G whistle, I have a Chieftain fixed low g I cannot just pick it up an play it as you have done, it takes plenty of air and I have to get it warm inorder to play it, it is also a SOLID metal whistle , on reflection i might have been better with another instrument. if you are familiar with the latter how would it compare with the humphrey for weight and playability. All the best, Brian
@@whistletutor Either way, collecting is fun. I suspect most whistle players, regardless of one's level of ability, are always looking for the whistle which is just so. Have you tried the Boho whistles?
As a photographer who struggles daily with GAS (gear acquisition syndrome), I've found my foray into the tin whistle world has stricken me with a new affliction. WAS, whistle acquisition syndrome. This channel is my enabler. 😀

Hi, can you do a review on the Dixon DX031D FOUR SECTION ACETAL FLUTE/WHISTLE D DUO? especially with the whistle head attachment. Thanks Dave
Beautiful instrument ❤
Great timbre in it

Now that time has passed how has it worked out for? What is the benefit of a G?
Great video. Any chance now u could do a tutorial for Jenny’s chickens. It’s a great tune but I can’t find anywhere to learn it

Ps I checked the making and it is a V4 G
I love the tone and versatility. Thank you! How long does it take to get his whistles?
Site is no longer available?
Ooo right you are - he changed website domains, updated now!
The opening is like Forged By Fire Whistles.
Is this a whistle maker?
👍
Hummmm. It seems to me you have made this, "last whistle" claim previously, no?
Maybe but I doubt it - this was always kinda the last one that might be worth getting

I didn't know you could say f-whistle on youtube.
