    I have only watched the introduction to this but I am so excited I found it. I have been working on a ring for a customer. She wants a pear shaped stone in a ring. The only way I can see how to get that done is with a prong setting and everything I am seeing is not working. I hope it works 🤞😁

  • @juliew1426
    @juliew1426 3 роки тому +2

    I also wanted to point out, when you have made a few more prong settings, you might find it easier to file the prongs before setting the stone. Or perhaps you can have the stone in place, but w/ the prongs slightly lifted, allowing the space to file your prongs. You will also find different ways and directions of filing, and will find your favorite, which may not always be the easiest. OK, that's all of my comments. Sorry for being such a chatterbox.

    • @MithrilArtsandJewelry
      @MithrilArtsandJewelry  3 роки тому +1

      I've tried that as well but the problem is it's hard to set the prongs because the wire is tough. I've even shattered a stone because of it. As I pointed out in the video, half hard wire is harder to bend when it's short that's why you need an excess amount of wire to be able to bend it to the shape that u want it to follow.

    • @MithrilArtsandJewelry
      @MithrilArtsandJewelry  3 роки тому +3

      Also, there are special tools for what you're saying. It's like a prong pusher or something and you need a ring clamp that's set on the table to use it because you'll need a lot of force to push the prongs in. This method that I'm using is what's readily available for me and it works perfectly at the moment. In the future, I'd love to get more tools to improve my work and to be able to create new things :)

    • @juliew1426
      @juliew1426 3 роки тому +3

      @@MithrilArtsandJewelry Oh no, I was not criticizing at all! Your method is great. I'm just saying that you will probably try different things. I wasn't talking about the metal smithing technique or tools. I am one of those thrifty ppl who believes in only acquiring the tools that you need at the moment (even though I'm a tool hoarder. I love jewelry tools!) and only invest in high end when you are sure you will use them a lot. I get attached to certain tools, too. Please, I was only saying that, for prong setting, you will probably explore different things...if that is a favorite technique and look.

      You might have a hard time working with round wire since it's not flat on the stone side. So, I can't recommend it. But you can try though if you have half hard round wire. Also, I haven't tried it yet but I'm thinking if you file the round wire flat on the stone side, it might work.

    Athough very beautiful, the feldspars (moonstone and labradorite) are fragile, Mohs 6.5, and not really well suited for rings or bracelets. They are better used in pendants and earrings.

    • @MithrilArtsandJewelry
      @MithrilArtsandJewelry  Рік тому

      Thank you! Yes that's true. Although with me, I haven't had any issues with them as rings when they've already been set. So far, they're still holding up even after a few years. :) so it really depends on the stone and if there are already cracks on them prior to setting or if the wearer isn't careful. :)

    • @MithrilArtsandJewelry
      @MithrilArtsandJewelry  3 роки тому

      You can try either. I find tho that if u use a thicker gauge like the 18, the inside diameter of the ring becomes a bit smaller. I just use 18 hh because that's what I have.

      Thank u for watching. I haven't tried it myself. But I'm guessing it could work. There are just a few adjustments you need to do in order to accomplish it though. Like folding the wires at an angle to accommodate the profile of the stone. But like I said, I'm not entirely sure if it will work. It just needs a bit of work around. Tbh, I've been thinking about it myself as well. 😅 In anycase, I will try it out and let you guys know next time.

    Can you wrap faceted stone on this setting or is it just for cabochons?

    • @MithrilArtsandJewelry
      @MithrilArtsandJewelry  Рік тому +1

      Sorry for the late reply. i haven't tried this with faceted stones but i'm guessing it could work if you make the base a bit more open to have space for the point of the stone. I'll try it out and let you guys know once i've done it.

    Amazing if you were to use a 12mm stone would I use the same gauges as these 🤗

    • @MithrilArtsandJewelry
      @MithrilArtsandJewelry  3 роки тому +1

      I think for a smaller stone like that, it's better to use an 18ga as long as it's half hard. I've done the same with sterling silver and it works.

      @@jenniferavenoso7162 you can use an 18 or 20 half round. But to connect the prongs together, I suggest an 20 instead

      @@MithrilArtsandJewelry One more thing LOL how do you judge the ring size because I ended up with a six way too small

    • @MithrilArtsandJewelry
      @MithrilArtsandJewelry  3 роки тому +1

      @@jenniferavenoso7162using a ring mandrel helps. Also, if you're using an 18 GA half round, it can cause the ring band to get thick. So it's best to make it a few millimeters longer to make sure ur ring band won't end up too small.

    what does being left or right handed have to do with the tutorial? sorry I'm just confused about that

    • @MithrilArtsandJewelry
      @MithrilArtsandJewelry  3 роки тому

      I've had some viewers who are right handed. And it's hard for them to follow because most tutorials are done with the right hand. That's why I upload videos for right hand as well.

    Can I use round wire for all instead of square?!😅

      I personally haven't tried it but maybe you can. If you file the underside of the prong so it lays flat on the stone.

    I only have dead soft, is it important to use half-hard for this project?

      I use dead soft

    • @MithrilArtsandJewelry
      @MithrilArtsandJewelry  3 роки тому +2

      I personally haven't tried dead soft so I can't say. But judging from from the strength of dead soft, I don't suggest it. It might not be as secure. Remember you only have 4 pieces of tiny wire to secure them but you can always add more base wires and prongs but not for big stones like the one I've used. :) so yah better to get some half hard wire:)

      @@MithrilArtsandJewelry that looked like 16 gauge. My 16 and 18 gauge toughens up fast. You can harden it before you start the project as well. I'll try it with whzt I have and let you know. The only drag of wire wrapping is being to afford both dead soft and half hard lol

      @@MithrilArtsandJewelry Half Hard Alllll day. Heck.... cut a bunch of rings from an old spring and that sucker will be sturdy.....*cutting old junk springs into rings ...like big jump rings*
      check that junk drawer!
      Dead soft in only a couple wire thickness; is going to flex, if the ring is taken on and off. It'll end up janky vs nice and str8. Dont most make their weave bases from half hard, then dead soft the wires being wrapped??? Is this not the norm? OMG is my life a lie?!?!?!
