A stunning novel I read last summer, that is very much embedded in a feral, yet intoxicating mountainous Catalan landscape is 'When I Sing, Mountains Dance' by Irene Solà. The first chapter alone hooked me after I realised the perspective the narration was coming from and it will stay in my memory for a long while.
I do get that she fits the character prototype but personality wise I imagined camilla a bit differently, dakota is bright cheery (or comes off as that just based on her youtube persona) but camilla isn't
Not a recent read but currently i am reading the picture of Dorian Grey for the first time and am absolutely infatuated!!!! It's gorgeous and descriptive and has made me feel things in a visceral way that classics don't often make me feel. In July, I read Zami: a new spelling of my name by Audre Lorde and it was honestly life affirming. Lorde is so poetic and witty and warm, definitely a new favourite of mine.
Not a film, but I have been so obsessed with the TV adaptation of Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice! If you haven't seen it already, I would highly recommend it! Imagine: SUPER gay vampires in 1910s New Orleans, a wonderful exploration of humanity, good versus evil, queer identity, historical racism, and so much more. The writing is stunning, the costumes, set design, and music are just so lush an beautiful. It's currently two seasons and it has been renewed for season three! I've just finished the book and it was amazing as well, it has literally taken over my entire life so.... :)
i watched a couple films this month but the ones that stuck out to me were The Sweet East and Tokyo Story. The Sweet East is some what experimental and was like a modern Alice in Wonderland, while Tokyo Story was a slow moving story about the relationship between parents and children (it had me sobbing at the end).
Dear Lady Dakota, me and my friend saw this film at a film festival in our little Czech town that we thought you might like. It’s called Joseph Killian, directed by Pavel Juráček and Jan Schmidt. It’s a Czech New Wave film from the 60s, only about 30 minutes long, a bit absurd but also quite funny. Have a lovely day :)
Thank you Dakota!!! I recently watched Daisies, and oh my gosh that movie was amazing. The experimental way it was filmed, paired with the slowly-rising sense of dread throughout made it such a surreal and lovely movie. Thanks for recommending it (in some other vid)! ✨😊
I’m from rural America and in my early twenties I moved to a big city, hated it, and came back to the farm town of my birth. I find it all to be very romantic, but I assume I’m in the minority. I live in a place where it’s just as common to see tractors and Amish buggies on the road as cars. There are stables outside of most stores where you can leave your horses. Cornfields for miles and abandoned churches looming behind them. I’m very connected to home though so my perspective may be warped, but it’s the only place I want to be!
I think you should watch “Holy Motors” by Leos Carax. I’m pretty sure it’s right up your alley. It’s experimental, existential, ‘nothing happens’ type, and importantly it’s very French
i have to say that being in the usa doesn’t quite give you an understanding of the whole usa, but rather the region you’re in, it’s much to big. i’m from New England, and i always meet people from the south who get a major culture shock coming up here. I also have no idea what LA is like aside from media so 🤷🏼♀️
favorite reads of this past month: guide by dennis cooper and regarding the pain of others by susan sontag! favorite watch of this past month: the fan (1982)
Just discovered you in my feed, love your channel! Jeanette Winterson is my favourite author of all time, recommend "Written on the Body" and "Art Objects" if you haven't read them yet.
I read Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson, and it totally captured something of my weird girl childhood that I'd never seen in art before. Thanks for recommending her!
A few recs: Coma (Bertrand Bonello film, streamable on MUBI); The Beast (also a Bertrand Bonello film, not sure where it's streaming); since you've been diving into surrealism lately, Nour Abi-Nakhoul's "Supplication" is a surrealist horror novel I read recently that was great; Olga Ravn's "The Employees" is a bizarre poetic sci-fi novella that has really stuck with me since I read it.
i only read two books last month and unfortunately i did not love either of them :( but i watched 14 films (i have no life)! some like it hot was one of the films i watched for the first time and i was shocked at how well the humor has stood the test of time. that was definitely my favorite film i watched in july and perhaps the whole year
As a rural American from the sticks, I would bet a good chunk of money that rural America and rural Australia are basically the same (as someone who has never been to Australia) but rural America is anything but Lana del ray. Lana is for the suburbanites who go camping in Colorado once every few years, and by camping I mean RV with toilets and water not actual camping. Rural America is the most unhinged place you can be and it’s kinda awesome in a weird way.
Dakota, I read monsters after watching your previous video. I know you mentioned it wasn't as good or interestring as the other books you have read. I agree that it wasn't actually than ground breaking. So what other books would you recommed that talks about similar topics
I’ve just finished reading her Passion According to GH - so intriguing, definitely goes into the reread collection! (I feel sorry we don’t have it in my native language as I feel like I would feel it differently and even more deeply) I’d recommend her for sure as well!
I read an amazing book in June called I sat by grand central station and wept. To be honest I brought it since I thought the title was cool and the cover was nice (it matched the other books I was going to buy as well) I went into ir completely blind but it was incredible. It's very lyrical, sad, incitefull, intelligent, just stunning highly recommended. It's a short book I think less then 200 pages but mentally quite hard going I did stop and start a few times, but once I got into it I finished it within a few hours. So many quotable lines about love, mortality, right and wrong. It's quite experimental (in my opinion anyway) but its definitely a 5/5 read from me and I would highly recommend it to anyone lookingfor a quick and interesting read.
I dropped my phone in the toilet last month too. I sanitized it but then its screen went off. I got it fixed n gave it to my brother n bought a new one lol

If they ever turn the secret history into a movie, you should play Camilla

Rural America is not very Lana Del Rey, sorry to break it to everyone. It is unfortunately more Kid Rock.
Thank you

As an American. I also say “I’m so sorry” when I hear someone grew up in rural America 😂
your makeup always looks so pretty
you were so nice and gracious with the way you talked about orion carloto's books, i could have never done it like that
being genuinely stressed out about july being over is so real
7:50 ive had that book on my cart since your first video, thank you for reminding me of it lol now ill finally finish the purchase

I'll be visiting soon enough! I hope to see what lies beyond the hills and mountains 😊

Two things I loved watching this video. The wrap up is brilliant and I am learning how to present myself on video. You make it look so easy.
