Extent of raw sewage in waters around Britain revealed

- Опубліковано 30 бер 2023
- Raw sewage flowed into the waters around Britain for almost two million hours last year.
Over 300,000 sewage spills were recorded in 2022.
That's a reduction on the year before, but that was largely down to below-average rainfall, rather than any particular action taken by water companies.
Our Science Editor, Tom Clarke, has been looking at the scale of the problem.

No prizes for guessing why the EU has banned the import of fresh bivalve molluscs from the UK
It's not a spill. It's a dump. Quite literally.
Sickening. When the ocean is gone so are we
Easy now, that's considered as woke.
@@FXTrader247 Anything approaching humanity and decency is considered woke these days. Just a catchall for things the right don't like - compassion, fairness, equality etc.
@@steveparker8065 Same for bigot, goes every which way and back when humans are involved. Woke, bigot, doesn’t matter. All hypocrites.
dont think the oceans going anywhere hahaha
"Around Britain" ? Incorrect. Only in England is it permitted to pump raw sewage.
The Scottish Government has not allowed that.
Population density England 434 per Km2
Population density Scotland 70 per Km2
and yet it is reported every year Scottish Water 'spill' sewerage. The 'allowance' is a measure and a political trick
@@Take_Me_Back_To_The_1980s what's your point? Because England is more densely populated we should accept more sewage in our waters?
@@scrumtious1 No I think we should send as many people back to their countries as possible to to take the strain off the infrastructure and environment. England can't have a green & pleasant land if it's overpopulated with third world migrants
England and Wales.
The tories just recently voted en mass to allow water companies to continue this practice for the next 15-50 years, enough is enough these companies have had 30+ years to get there act together, they are run to ensure profits for overseas owners, massive directors salaries & dividends to shareholders, when they need to do infrastructure maintenance they go into debt to fund it, time to take these companies back into public ownership on environmental grounds, take back not buy back because they have fleeced us enough!.
This government don’t give a hoot sadly 😢
Wow…. Here I am thinking it went to treatment plants. It’s no wonder why are beaches are disgusting and murky.
Last year we went to seaford on a sunny hot day. A day later we were sick, including our dog who also took a swim. There was no warning sign and the beach was quite crowded. I can’t believe water companies disregard public health for the sake of profit but it becomes apparent that some public services are just not fit for being held in private hands.
TAKE the government to court what the hell are they doing to us
phillipcarter I believe I would be correct in saying that the corporation known as the UK government, the corporation known as say Welsh Water, Thames Valley Water etc same as Gas and electric corporations are in ' cahoots' together, for financial reasons as well as nefarious reasons.
It is only allowed in england not in Scotland
Population density England 434 per Km2
Population density Scotland 70 per Km2
Cause barely anyone lives in Scotland lol
@@Take_Me_Back_To_The_1980s so what
@@paxundpeace9970 More people means more waste and pollution. That's why the 'Little Englanders' object to a million people coming to Britain every year, because they all come to England and the infrastructure can't cope with it
These water companies are listed on the LSE- ask yourself what their shareholders' motives are. Certainly not clean drinking water.
I started boiling and filtering my tap water after this came to light last year. One of the Brexit benefits I guess.
why? is tap water not clean ?
Best stop paying water bills ,
More brexit benefits
It's All about the money money. WORK HARD, get dumped on.
They said it was just 4 times a year that's how pathetic the water companies are 😠
More Brexit benefits. 5th columnists.
It's really 375,000 times a year just in England
There is only one solution and it is NOT issuing huge fines that the water companies will simply pass onto their captive customers. It is a very real threat of non-compliant water companies being taken back into public ownership WITH NO COMPENSATION FOR SHAREHOLDERS. For example, set a sewage discharge clock of say 100 pollution incidents after which the company is taken over. That will focus their minds a bit!
they will just use it to up peoples water costs...
They are going to finish his business and nothing will happen
Englamd is going down the drain
Includes all the tonnes of micro plastics from our washers and dryers also oil and diesel washed off our roads by the rain
Only 800+ bay, wow
I just joined people boycotting the wastewater part of our water bills because there were 300,000 untreated.
sewage discharges into UK waterways in 2022 and shareholders made nearly £1bn in profits over the same period. It’s wrong.
The more of us who do it, the more likely we’ll see clean rivers and oceans.
Afraid to talk about brexit ?
300 million hours?
300 years
They government needs to put sewage executives in prison they dump it into the ocean and rivers to save money so they can give themselves larger bonuses
We should not have to pay extra for the clean up. Water companies have had billions of pounds from its customers but not invested anything back. The water companies need to cover the cost of their stinking mess.
Thanks to our Brexit Voting Dummies.... Appreciate it!
It's nothing to do with Brexit. The water companies repeatedly and deliberately polluted our waters many times before Brexit and are still doing it now. The EU threatened to fine the government but, in typical EU fashion, never actually got around to it, dithering for over four years until we left! They are as much use as the condoms on our beaches.
This has nothing whatsoever to do with Brexit lol.
Plenty of marine life washing up on Saltburn beach, all ready for cheap export due to the savings gained from not having to fish them.
Only mildly stained from the River Tees being tinted bright red, it's purely cosmetic and a totally natural event...so we've been told by the Environmental Agency.
Strangely enough, nobody is claiming this free source of seafood. I can't imagine why.

Nothing has changed, except private water treatment companies incredible profits.
Thames Water previously owned by Australian Investment company Mcquarrie, who now own Southern Water. Serial under investment polluters of rivers and sea.
Oh, is that it?? Eyeroll!
What fix the sewage problem, and break into the big buck profits, not a tomtit of a chance,

Brexit.
No regulations, no accountabilities.... .
Maximum corruptions.
Well done little britain. Great job.
1930's Germany full on.
Nail on the head!!!!! 🙄
these are problems dating back pre-privatisation. Cross party failures to deal with the issue. My diesel and gas boiler are finger pointed as the enemy yet Water Companies get a free pass
So much for not lowering standards after leaving the EU, nice 'Brexit benefit'
What has this got to do with brexit
@@jayc342009 Lowering standards Mimimimimimi
Why is it that every thing that is supposed to happen that we should benefit from is always 2030+
