I clicked on this video hoping to find some love again for Floyd Rose bridges, but it reminded me why I only use fixed bridge guitars since my first one.
I'm starting to think that guitars with a Floyd are more common than I thought, for example my dream guitar is a Jackson RR and I can't find one with a hard tail bridge, but I don't have the money for it anyway. Guess it's not something I should worry about just yet.

  • @theelmagoo
    @theelmagoo 3 роки тому +39

Floating bridge guitars are the manual gearboxes of guitars! You just have to have that extra bit of love and desire to learn and use 'em, and they're very rewarding once mastered :)
Some great ideas in here I'll have to try, but one question... instead of clipping the ball off the string as the first thing, why not just insert the string from the opposite end at the start? Then you can just clip the ball with the excess string after it's locked in? Obviously not a big deal, was more curious if there's a reason you choose not to? :)

I have a Charvel San Dimas II in blue with the Rose and it's my favorite guitar I've ever played. It's been really humbling learning how to really excel at playing with a trem, because you have to be much more conscious of every little bit of tension, even on strings you aren't playing. Now I'm tuned to C# standard and I'm doing a bunch of BTBAM songs, and just for fun I'm learning Bleed as well.

All great tips. It didn't go into the greatest of details, but did at least touch the basics to making it work right - stretching the strings is critical with a Floyd Rose or other floating bridge. I'd also recommend making sure the bridge's posts/studs are lubricated with something like a PTFE dry lube, if it's a new guitar, the springs for the bridge also need to be stretched a bit, and personally, I've found the NYXLs to be more stable than the XL strings.

I've been preaching this all over UA-cam for a little while now. Trying to reduce some of the Floyd Rose hate with a little info. They really aren't that bad to deal with. Some people just never take the time to learn how to deal with them and make it much easier. The only time I take more than one string off at a time is if I'm going to do some maintenance on the neck or bridge.

I played my Ibanez STM1 for 12 years with the stock Edge III tremolo (no shade to the EGEN; the Iceman just spoke to me!) and because I didn't know any better I'd long assumed that all Floyd Rose-style tremolo systems had the same problems staying in tune. I used to wonder how the hell Sam could possibly rely on this guitar on tour if I couldn't even keep it in tune treating the tremolo with kid gloves. When I learned that the STM1 Sam plays on tour actually uses the same Edge Zero bridge as Herman's EGEN, it all suddenly made sense (and I'll admit I felt slightly duped by Ibanez). I recently took the plunge and had some surgery done to replace the Edge III with a Lo-Pro Edge and it's like a whole different guitar.
Herman - you're doing god's work with this Floyd Rose educational content. I feel like so many people (myself included) buy awesome guitars that are unfortunately kitted with low-quality floating bridges and then give up out of frustration and write Floyd Roses off completely. I remember how frustrating and time-consuming it was figuring this stuff out back then, and it makes me happy knowing that these vids are surely saving people that headache and giving them the tools to get the most out of their Floyds! :D

I put my EDGE 1986 apart on my RG550 1994ish as the guitar guy had no idea and didn't touch my bridge to oil or set it up even I gave it to him for that reason, to clean and set up the guitar so it won't detune anymore. Vai used one of these on his JEM, and it's not detuning on his guitar back in the day.
He has no clue but pretended to have, I learned more here and while my research the last week as he knows I bet. What bothers me that I had it in my feeling that I was right with my theories why it's unstable and it can be fixed, and that it is a proper bridge even if not original Floyd Rose, but didn't want to be a difficult customer and give the young guy a chance to learn on it. He's the expert I thought. It wasn't even set up parallel to the body ...
Thanks again! I'm positive now to get it back to rock!

Someone in the chat asked how you clean and oil the fretboard when you don't remove all the strings. You can still work it with one string at a time. Basically when you remove the high E, clean and oil the section you have clear. Repeat for each string. You can also get between the strings when they are all installed. It's really not a huge deal just takes longer. Apply your cleaner and/or oil to your cloth and then wipe, don't squirt it right on the fretboard so you don't gum up the strings too much. Then I use a string conditioner/cleaner to make sure all the oils are removed. If you use a coated string you just need to wipe it with a dry microfiber like usually comes with the maintenance kits you can get from Amazon or your local music store.

Great video! It is very common to see great guitar players that doesn’t know how to adjust the tremolo, it is really helpful, I wonder if you use the tool that moves the saddles for setup the intonation, thanks for sharing y saludos desde México.

Herman Li talkin' 'bout floyd rose physics. Well, now I've seen everything. I wish I've seen it three years ago when I bought my first guitar, he-he. Somehow came to all of it by myself

Thanks Herman. I needed that tipp. Since I am currently fighting my cheap China Floyd Rose and setup the guitar I had to take off all strings more often. Sometimes very much annoying.
Anyways I'll ditch that POS soon for a Schaller made Floyd. when that's all done I'll only change strings 1 by 1. Should never have to bother much with tension and intonation.
On that note: Thick strings intonation not an easy task.

I hidratate my fretboard with old strings on, is very hard but i always take one string at a time to put a new one, that way is always balaced and perfect, once you have already optimized for you. I will never have it all removed to re-string, i would loose all the perfection, even intonation is spot on in most of the seasons.

I think I am more happy with the zero Edge Tremolo system than the fully floating bridge, It’s a freaking headache for me

This just reminds me how much work it is for the arguably little return. Maybe if I can get good at playing the REST of a Dragonforce song THEN I will practice the crazier whammy bar sections and get good at dealing with the floating bridge. (I do love my Egen tho. But I can never change the strings...)
