    Unfortunately bad writing discourages students who think they are just bad and can’t play the parts. It also eats up rehearsal time. You end up working on technical passages that don’t add any value to the music and teach bad technique.

    Hello from Russia! I am a beginner drummer. I tried to play at a concert with slipknot songs, and the drum teacher told me that the songs use rolls on the snare drum (from Jay Weinberg). I ordered sticks with a "keg"-tip (I was looking for a round one). But they were ProMark TXDC50W and they are big... I decided to find out what "system blue" means... found Scott Johnson. Next, I just searched UA-cam for "drum rudiments"...and found your video. Thank you, you opened the big world of percussion for me!

    I love this channel so much. Ive watched almost all of your videos. One of my favorites is the 12 Drumline cadences. I watch at least 2 EMCproductions videos every day, and I don’t watch videos very often. I never miss new video
    Thanks you for all the tips, beats, rythms, everything. its always so entertaining to watch. My high school’s battery was always hard to get into but they need a whole new bassline next year, so Im practicing snare and the bass players are helping me with their music. I may not understand everything in your videos but it actually still really helps. For now im stuck in front enemble, but that comes with its own perks. One of the vibe(raphone)s was supposed to be a tenor/quads this year but stayed in pit instead. They gave me their snare basics packet and now I practice every day. I REALLY need to work on my traditional grip, I dont think I’m doing it right but it kind of works. got any tips? Thank you so much! ❤️

    • @TheMokeleMbembe
      @TheMokeleMbembe Рік тому +1

      I am not Eric but I am (was) a snare drummer (as you can see on my channel). A couple things that helped me improve my traditional grip were: (1) think of the motion of your wrist as the same type of motion as turning a doorknob, (2) don't curl your fingers in TOO much, let it be gentle, (3) the contact point between your thumb and the first knuckle of your pointer finger should make a capital T, (4) the stick should rest on the most distal segment of your ring finger, (5) make sure to stretch and work on things like slow legatos (infinity on a hand, playing on a drum pad along to music you like) because the grip and motion is not intuitive at all and takes time to become comfortable with.

      @@TheMokeleMbembe tysm!! ill definitely try it out. The way I was doing it looked a little right but It was hard to accent with the left and it hurt my bottom 2 fingers after a small amount of time so there’s no way it was.
      Thank you ❤️

    • @TheMokeleMbembe
      @TheMokeleMbembe Рік тому +1

      @@justsomeguywholikesdrums1481 Absolutely, and good luck with trying to get onto snare! Also, don't take this as me saying 'no pain no gain' bc generally pain in drumming indicates something is wrong, but even so - I *still* get major calluses & occasionally blisters on my left ring finger where the stick rests/contacts, when I start drumming again after a long time off.
      The 'hard to accent w/ left' part sounds like, it was difficult to get enough wrist rotation to get the stick up high - right? Which, it's something that takes time for your body to build up the familiarity and muscle to do. Those forearm muscles aren't ones we typically use for a lot of exertion, so the demand that drumming places on them takes time for them to get used to. Once I tried to teach myself traditional grip on my right hand, to get a taste of what younger players were going through, and even knowing good technique and correcting myself constantly, it was very difficult to do and didn't reach the capability of my left hand.
      One other thing to keep in mind w it - a lot of people extend their left arm a bit too far, putting the stick at like 9 o clock (if you're holding the drum and looking at it like a clock). I feel like the left stick at set position should cross the rim at about 7:30 or 8 o clock, mirroring what kind of naturally happens with the right hand. This might seem picky or weird, but it actually helps get the right wrist motion.

If you have anything it would be appreciated! also any advice on being on drumline overall in general? thanks so much!

    I'm a volunteer percussion instructor for the high school I graduated from, and I grew up learning memorized parts and the drumline still operates that way. This year I'm trying to get everything written so we don't have to depend just on my memory on what they should be playing. What software does EMC use? Every single comment he says on how to fix things I completely agree on and would do the same thing and am currently teaching the drumline to do, but I need a way to write everything down and this software looks PERFECT. Any direction would be amazing so I can begin solidifying our line. They're doing absolutely AMAZING this year now that we've built momentum the last couple of years, and I want to keep that going.

    there ought to be a different notation for the type of "both notes are equal volume and pretty far apart in time" flam that people write when they want you to sound like the intro to my hero by the foo fighters, which is a pretty different flavour to the "very close, controlled quiet grace note with a loud main note" flam traditionally meant by the notation. i get the impression that the first kind is what people want when they put a flam at the end of a roll.

    Recently on my last year in my high school line i looked at the tenor part after our tenor player begged me to help em and rewrite it after the drum tech refused
    I saw some weird writing
    It was a cut time parade tune that we play for memorial day and 4th of july and there was a point where every drum instrument enters a roll at a different time and they all end with a shot
    It was 1 2 1 shot
    The tenors came in on 2 and had their shot on the next beat so it sounded like
    1 2 shot shot
    Then the forbidden tenor part with sixteenth note triplets up from drum 1 to drum 4 where i rewrote it as each sextuplet was on 1 drum so drum 2 then 1
    It was accented as sextuplets

    I have a question. How do you write the sticking out like you did? Did you have to repeatedly add staff text or is there a key bind I can find to do that?

    • @OMGitsEricE
      @OMGitsEricE Рік тому +1

      The same place you go to for staff text, all the way down there’s a “sticking” option and it lets you write it faster

      control + L works best it’s the lyrics options it’s faster and better in my opinion than the Sticking option
