I played french horn growing up and somehow learned how to play music without learning keys and the way their scales are formed. I basically just saw a note on the staff and played it. However, once I started playing guitar, I found that I was limited on what I could because of my lack of knowledge. I could play simple songs but never understood how you could form the same chords two ways and how people just know how to do it. I feel like me watching this video is the beginning of finally being able to let my musical mind free. Thank you so much. I'll be watching your next videos so that I can progress.
Sounds like you have an awesome ear though ricky! Great job for wanting to learn more theory! Mate hundreds of videos already in the Grade 1 Playlist that I think could help, good luck! ua-cam.com/play/PLUi8ojFsJMz6e-JYo2fwxS4g43PuzsPtU.html
I know how you feel. I play guitar for 9 years and play mostly by feeling and ear, but if I'm jamming with other musicians and they're like "play a g major 7!" I'm like... "You what mate??"
I've tried so many videos, i've tried jamplay, i've tried college classes and your video is by far the single best clarification i've ever found on how to construct major scales, thanks man!
You're the first man who could through this thick skull of mine and teach me some music theory. I actually comprehend this completely. You're a real pal, Pat.
I've been playing guitar for 5 years and I'm self-taught. With being self-taught, I never took the time to learn musical theory or anything like that, but you make it so easy to understand. THANK YOU! Don't stop making these videos!
so many videos about scales, this is the only one that caused that neuronal click, and I feel I actually understand scales now. Bless you, you beautiful man
The snack break is hilarious. I took a speaking course yesterday and the instructor recommended every 6-8 minutes changing the pace to keep the audience with you. Delicious execution of the principle!
I think that in a short amount of time you could write out the scale degree numbers for all the most common scales and modes. Long term it great being able to remember them off the bat, but for know practice writing out the major scale for each note, then work on changing that scale by changing the scale degrees (minor scale, lowering the 3rd degree ect.), and in order to remember which major scales/key signatures have which amount of sharps or flats, google circle of fourths! You can do it!
You have saved my life! Thank you! My violin teacher has taught me over stuff too but I can't seem to grasp what she's talking about but you have everything I need to know! Thank you!
Thanks sooo much! My music teacher's way of explaining this was very difficult to understand. I'm glad I can finally understand something as important as major scales.
I've been making music on FL studio for about two months now and going into piano roll and just randomly selecting keys and adjusting them is really stressful and tasking. Your videos are improving my understanding significantly just on the first watch!! I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. I'm definitely sharing these videos to anybody i meet that have the same problems as i do
OMG! I cannot thank you enough dude! You just saved me. I play the trumpet and midterms are two days away. I decided to study and found this video. This just helped me so much. Please become my music teacher. Lol but seriously thank you and never stop making videos!
Thank god for this video I wasn’t paying attention to my music class because virtual learning it the worst for me but watching it on UA-cam actually helps me or maybe this guy is just better than my teacher
You are an excellent teacher! I've been playing guitar from a young and finally thought I would expand on my little music theory. Keep doing what your doing, you're doing a good thing!
Thank you I enjoyed this I am a young bluegrass/songwriter , am in a concert band and a jazz band and wanted to start learning the fundamentals the bands taught me surprisingly little but enough to for the class I now will use the making major thing a ton
You're a great teacher, theory has never been my strong point but literally as you were explaining it i was learning the major scales, i also went on to learn G whilst you were making popcorn, so thanks a lot!
Amazing lesson! My 3rd day on bass guitar. Starting at 26 yrs old is kinda late, but better to start than never. This is going to help me learn so much faster. Very clear teaching
Thank you so so much! You have no idea how much this helped me, especially since I've been struggling to understand this for quite a while, and you explained it perfectly and better than my professor! You just saved my midterm grade.

I played Sax back in school... but, we were never taught music theory like this. Friends who also had private lessons knew this, and the rest of us just sat there feeling pretty dumb.....Thanks!
I'm a guitarist and I love playing but it has always been hard for me to grasp music theory. In this video you gave me an amazing understanding of how the notes work together in a major scale and I foresee myself understanding the minors and etc thanks to your videos! I appreciate your help :) keep it up!
You're very very welcome Luka! Welcome to my channel :) if you do want to learn theory I would check out this Grade 1 Playlist, all the minor theory and song writing tips are in here! ua-cam.com/play/PLUi8ojFsJMz6e-JYo2fwxS4g43PuzsPtU.html
@HaistaPaska92 you're very welcome mate! I'm studying music to be a teacher and composer for film, i love teaching i went to my first music school after playing for only a year! Anything is possible!
THANK YOU! SO much stuff just clicked into place man. I'm in school for music and coudln't quite get why certain scales had flats or sharps in certain areas, just memorized it, I needed someone to take me through it painfully slow, thank you so much man.
I should have had a teacher like you, especially the good looking one ;) You have a gift in explaining things clear and a showman gift as well :) Thanks a lot!
hey bro.. sincere thanks to you. Seriously this is the best tutorial videos I've ever seen. You've explained everything in so damn easy way. God bless you.

Thanks for making this video. Years ago my instructor was trying to drill this into my head but I didn't care enough. Though this "boring stuff" is essential to get a grasp on how to shred. Thanks again. Will check out your other videos to build up from this!
Hi Pat! Thank you so much for explaining music theory so well. Of course the same principles apply to the keyboard too. Consequently I feel I have a greater understanding of both instruments. Two for the price of one! Thank you so much for taking the time. Mike (in England).
These videos are awesome dude, you deserve so much more views. Especially helpful to a guy like me who can't really afford lessons. Are you studying music by any chance? It's something I want to pursue in the future but I'm unsure If I can gather all of the necessary skills by then, since by the earliest that I can apply I would have been playing for only about 4 years. I am trying hard though, and thanks to your videos I'm sure I'll learn heaps more :)

I'm new to theory. This video has helped me have a bit of a better understanding at zero stress... Thanks for the video.
Here are the notes I took while watching. Please feel free to correct me where I am wrong. Im not theory wiz. Maybe one day!
Understanding how to create major scales
1. Intervals
If you play any note on any instrument and then play another note,
the intervocalic distance will be made up of semitones and tones
A Semitone distance is a one piano key/guitar fret distance. "Half step".
A Tone distance is 2 semitones. "Whole Step".
Semitone Interval Example: C to C#
Tone Interval Example: C to D (skipped C#)
For simplicity, S will stand for Semitone or Single Fret
T will stand for Tone or Two frets
2. Sharps and Flats
Sharps and Flats are symbol notes between two "normal" notes
Example: Going up a Semitone from C will be C#
The order of where you put all of your sharps and flats
from the note C to another C.
C,C#,D,D#,E,F,F#,G,G#,A,A#,B,C
C,Db,D,Eb,E,F,Gb,G,Ab,A,Bb,B,C
Sharps and Flats are the same thing; the only difference is how they are read.
A C# is the EXACT same note as a Db because they are both a Semitone above C.
*There are no sharps or flats between 'B,C' & 'E,F'
3. The C Major Scale
The notes in the musical alphabet are: A,B,C,D,E,F,G
C Major Scale: C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C
There are no sharps or flats in the C Major Scale.
To play a C major scale you must play a series of intervals
beginning on the C note. The intervals are as followed.
'T,T,S,T,T,T,S'
