Location: Sanur Beach
Sanur, located closest to the Balinese capital Denpasar, holds the distinction of being the oldest beach tourism destination in Bali, pre-dating popular spots like Kuta, Nusa Dua, and Uluwatu. In 1963, during the presidency of Sukarno, the iconic Grand Inna Bali Beach (formerly known as Bali Beach InterContinental Hotel) was erected in Sanur, becoming the island's inaugural five-star luxury resort. At that time, only three significant hotels existed on the entire island. What sets the Grand Inna Bali Beach apart is its remarkable ten-story height, making it Bali's tallest hotel, a feat accomplished prior to the enactment of height restrictions in 1971, which typically prohibited buildings exceeding the height of a coconut palm tree.
In addition to the Grand Inna Bali Beach, Sanur plays host to a variety of other hotel resorts, including the Maya Sanur Resort & Spa, the InterContinental Bali Sanur Resort (formerly known as Fairmont Sanur Beach Bali and Regent Bali in earlier years), the Hyatt Regency Bali (formerly Bali Hyatt, not to be confused with the Grand Hyatt in Nusa Dua), and the Andaz Bali. Furthermore, Sanur has seen a burgeoning number of popular villa resorts catering to the needs of discerning tourists.
To satiate the appetites of visitors, a multitude of restaurants and shops have sprung up along the picturesque coastal area. Many of these establishments proudly showcase Bali-grown brands, emphasizing ingredients and materials native to the island. Among these culinary and retail gems, notable mentions go to The Sandwich Bar, the vibrant Flamingo Beach Club nestled in Pantai Saba, and the revered Italian Gelateria and restaurant, Massimo, which has become a cherished institution, drawing eager crowds on nearly every evening. Adding to the Italian flair in Sanur is the resort wear boutique, BIASA, a fashion pioneer on the island, founded by the art enthusiast Susanna Perini. Numerous other retail outlets dot the coastal area, notably geared towards a more mature group of Bali visitors in comparison to some of the island's other bustling destinations.
