  • Have you ever pondered the enduring legacy of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and its century-long journey through peace, growth, and controversy? Reverend Dr. Gerhard Bode joins us to unravel this narrative, revealing the pivotal moments that have shaped the LCMS, especially during the transformative post-WWII era. Dr. Bode's deep well of knowledge brings to life the Synod's pursuit of higher education standards and its commitment to mission work, while also examining the scars left by the Semenex controversy, a true testament to the church's complex history.
Our conversation with Dr. Bode ventures into the theological battlegrounds that have tested American Lutheranism, where modern scriptural interpretations have sparked fiery doctrinal debates. We step into the fray of gospel reductionism and higher criticism, pondering the balance between historical veracity and the potency of the unchanged Word. As we navigate these topics, Dr. Bode reminds us how these discussions have shaped ecumenical relationships and challenged the Lutheran Confessions to address contemporary issues without sacrificing the essence of the faith.
In a heartfelt discussion about the essence of the LCMS, we reflect on the necessity of doctrinal unity without compromising the missionary zeal that propels the church forward. Dr. Bode underscores the importance of maintaining harmony within the Synod while fostering a passionate outreach, and invites listeners to experience the fervor of Call Day at Concordia Seminary. Join us for an enlightening journey through the past, present, and future of the LCMS, where faithfulness to doctrine and an eagerness for missionary work promise to define the church's trajectory.

Excellent discussion of a topic that is still a wound in the LCMS. The LCMS doesn’t do “subtle” well. You modeled an Irenic and effective model in discussion. Thanks to the 3 of you!

I wish I could find a Bible believing. Bible preaching LCMS LUTHERAN Church. I'll take both Law and Gospel. Here in West Houston Texas area.
A shepherd like Pastor Pieplow. Who loved Jesus. Loved his truth and loved people.

What happened to A.C. Piepkorn settles my feelings on the situation. Branding that man a heretic (which likely facilitated his heart attack and premature passing) on top of the political strong-arming of Jack Preus and the Joe McCarthyism of trouble-maker Hermann Otten... shows to me more than enough of whose side was in the right.
Was there a danger in excessive use of the historical critical method? Yes, we needed to have that conversation one way or another (perhaps in a more nuanced way, though)... but the fact that authoritarian fundamentalism won the day in the Synod did not bode well for our collective future.

I don't know if others experience this, but the moving cameras make me disoriented. That's the only criticism I have, I appreciate the conversation.

The event of Semenex was a complicated event, with many loving people on both sides. And as we all know Sinners on both sides. And Jesus died for all of them.
Lord keep us humble to your Word. Keep us faithful. And keep us from temptation to become idolatrous to "our" theology.

I was a member of the LCMS in Mobile Alabama as a teenager in the 1970S the Lutherans there attitude to outreach was to wait for Lutherans to move to Mobile.

Yeah I was at Concordia Lutheran College in Austin Texas when it was for real. It discouraged me from being a Lutheran minister. I became a Locomotive Engineer instead

What discouraged me was. Lutherans telling me. The Bible was not the Word of God. That it was a History Book. That the things it said like creaton . Flood. Virgin Birth of Jesus. His Deiity. His blood atonement weren't real.
Yet they were allowed to take Holy Communion . Many of my friends went to the ELCA. I went Charismatic. Big mistake. I never found a relationship with Jesus in the movement. I did however meet him on his terms of surrender at the cross. December 23 1973.
When I was 18 years old. Half way through my Senior Year of High School. He radically saved me from sin.

I'd say the scriptures are very cut and dried
