Surviving a difficult & narrow valley on a long XC flight

  • On an XC route I really like, there is one difficult place that gets extremely difficult when the meteo wind strengthens the valley breeze, so the thermals become turbulent and hard to work. Adding a lot of shadows to this - a perfect mix for grounding paraglider pilots on their XC flights. In this video I show how I managed to survive this place despite losing a lot of altitude first. I was rewarded by being able to close my 186 km flat (173 km FAI) triangle on that day and land at 7:30 PM after 9.5 hours of flying. Nice!

Всё-таки знание аэрологии и терпение при поиске потока вознаграждаются. Смотрел и переживал.

Stunning! You show not to give up. But you need to know where to look and try…

So badass. Your vids are awesome. They are teaching me how to read the terrain. Much appreciated.

Stupendous job of making lemonade from Lemons! I know i have been quite critical of your flying in the past (and rightly so i believe) but i see that you have made great strides in your technique and your ability to master conditions. Our hats are off to you!

Very interesting as always ! Just an idea, I don't know how to do it myself so maybe it's just not worth the effort, but it would be really cool to have your flight data (particularly altitude but vertical and horizontal speed too) overlaid on the video. Given the way you edit the video, we usually get a good idea of those things but hard data is always nice : )

Thanks for this suggestion! I was thinking about it some time ago, but figured out it would need a lot of effort to sync the videos with the data flow. I'll have another look, maybe there are better tools available now that make it easier.

@@dymanoid I guess the trick to syncing would be having accurate timestamps on all your tracks and even if you sync only one camera, that's still be a big plus

It is relatively easy. You just screen recorder xc track replaying the Video and overlapp them. Eliminating the Song playing in the background is harder. For sure harder thanks the steuggle to get up again. Is this Lüssen?

Great work searching for thermals! I also have a Insta360 camera and i wonder where did you get that kit for mounting the camera ok you harness?

Thanks for watching! I use a random clamp found on Amazon to attach the camera to my carabiner and the original selfie stick.

Very nice! Which country were you flying in? Do you know where the valley was? Which town nearby?

This is the Alto Adige region in North Italy. The flat ridge is located between the town Bressanone in the west and the mountain Kronplatz in the east.
