If I was watching a video on another channel, and (since you approved of it) they used your music, it'd be FREAKING AWESOME. Here's hoping I get to see that happen.
Nice review. I have a Onkyo TX-SR608 home theater receiver that I bought around 2010 that does not display RDS (unless one had the European model) but with the optional Onkyo UP-HT1 HD receiver attached, RDS will be displayed when the input that the HD receiver is on is active. I have my receivers attached to an old Winegard TV antenna in my attic and I can pull in any local station in the Philadelphia suburbs and quite a few distant ones. Having a good external antenna has made a huge difference. Without it, I can barely get even the strongest radio stations despite being less than 25 miles from Philadelphia as the crow flies.
Gaps between tracks is a deal breaker for me, but the fact it plays wav files is more of a pleasant surprise. ...and you just jumped 100,000 points in my book--I used to work in oldies radio, and you enjoy obscure recordings!
@xcellnt I wish! I wanted there to be "The Happy Moog (Gets Stuck In Rush Hour)" from the Carlosploitation episode in the pre-gap. My redbook authoring software wouldn't allow it. I could've farmed out the CD authoring to a third party, but it would've been pointless. I could only find one manufacturer that'd allow a pre-gap easter egg--they would've had me sign a buttload of waivers opening me up to paying total damages if it messed up any of their gear.
I don't know why I'd imagine a German radio station that focuses on US "oldies" would exclusively play hits from the 80's , the fact they're playing Credence is a surprise to me. Then again, I once stumbled on a German 60's Go-Go music CD in one of those public library boxes, and it had at least 2 or 3 German language covers of American songs. My ONLY frame of reference for German pop music is basically Krasftwerk.
I honestly wanted to hear your rant on XMs deep tracks channel 😂. Use to be a big fan of that channel. Something about the B side of an album or cassette.
The channel got moved from 27 to somewhere in the 300's--well above what my car receiver can get (and, naturally, the #1 place I listen). No desire to try and run the app off my phone while driving (not that my car is new enough to let me plug my phone into the stereo). Also, the cell signal is just dodgy enough around here that using the app would be a fool's errand half the time anyway. Just some decision that some dumbass suit at the corporate level apparently made. Complaints to corporate have fallen on deaf ears so far.
There ya go. When I hear Francoise Hardy (who I hadn't heard in ages and was a welcome reminder) and Jacques Brel, I guess it just immediately gets labeled in my brain.
I had often wanted to get one of these, space being a premium where I live, but ended up with a boom box. I might have to consider getting one of these. I wonder if the FM stereo chip could be burned out or the antenna is strong enough to get the station but mono only. Great review Ben.
To each His own Ben but, why not lower powered (and priced too) separates? I have a NAD pre-amp, Hafler power amp, Klispch Heresy and Technics1200 with my two open reel decks..Bought most second hand, minimal update/repair needed. As you know, if one drops dead, all the others work...Seems at very least far greater selection, and if budget is an issue, by one component at a time...
The spatial limitations of the bedroom force me to keep things to a minimum. It's strictly so I can have some kind of basic (ultra-compact) stereo in there. The big, main stereo/home theater rig is in the living room/lab/main OA techie hub. All the stuff you see on OA lives in there.
We've had a Denon DCD500AE component CD player from 2007 in our system since 2015. It plays well, CD-RW (but only audio, no MP3 etc) - All the audio functions yours has, ours has too. Unfortunately that includes the "rewind" thing. Also, most of the fuctions are only on the remote, which we had to buy from Germany (I'm in Australia) amd we needed one in 2020. Had to wait a while for that.
My mom's old shelf system finally broke and she wants a new one. I've been looking for a replacement and that category has really died out. I suppose the class of consumer that used to buy them is buying sound bars nowadays. I think I may get the Denon D-M41 because it has a boomer-friendly volume knob. Anybody have any experience with that one?
prolly there is a setting to switch to a standard FM stereo mode. These boxes switch to FM mono when the signal is weak but it should be configurable in tuner's settings (auto mode or similar)
Nakamichi made one which was around $600 in the 1990s? Currently the RCD-N10 is on sale at Amazon $299.99. The RCD-11 is for Europe and has DAB/DAB+ as does the RCD-N12. I've only found a review of all three models on electricshop. I've not found the RCD-11 for sale anywhere in the USA.
Kick drum which is very common in Rock and Roll is as low as 50Hz. I remember something to the effect of it being centered at around 63Hz. You can either use a server, NAS, or PC to store music which can be called up over your LAN. The delay in music starting could be due to buffering? up to 1mb before the file starts playing.
Just courious on internet radio, may try kdza as it relaunched after 30 yrs as a radio station. Last few years was talk, sports, and went back to music this year.
I finally have my HEOS app working on the RCD-N10 I purchased from Amazon. The HEOS app is a bit of a kluge it seems. Too bad there isn't a webpage interface reachable from one's local PC lan, sigh. There seems to be no operation to power the unit off from the HEOS app, or I haven't found it yet. It seems to take some time from power on to playing the last Internet radio station I was listening too. The wonderful world of computer automated electronics! 😉
That's debatable--despite the Denon name, it's still a fairly cheap Chinese thing (even back then). As for fixing it...it's like unbaking a layer cake. 12VoltVids tried to fix one similar to mine recently. ua-cam.com/video/XrhDD676uSE/v-deo.htmlsi=EXyhprWoiGPl_kMY
@@OddityArchive This is true. If it were an older made in Japan job then it might be more worthwhile. Still a bit of a bummer. Though it's cool that yours has two optical in, it has no digital out. Such is life.
I did! It was my first stereo with a CD player--would've been 1998, I think. The main unit croaked in 2003. I was using the speakers from it as late as 2018.
It seem your missing out on loads of stuff with this system - don’t understand why you would delete the HEOS app - there so much you can do within the app which means you don’t need the remote you can make your own playlist just click on the playlist and it turns on your system and plays the same as radio and so on - easy access within settings for your system and firmware updates
The N11 is the upgrade from the n10 the n11 brought DAB radio which the n10 does not have - make sure if your not using Denon scn10 speakers turn off speaker optimisations in settings under audio . These Denon systems are quality I started with the n9 then the n10 and now just about to upgrade to the n12
I don't think I'd want an 8 year-old trying to buy it. :D Seriously though, visit benminnotte.bandcamp.com/album/music-from-the-oddity-archives There's a list of options running down the left half of the page (download, CD, Cassette or CD/Cassette bundle - all physical copies should come with a free download). Personally I think you should have done your research before buying this maybe a tad advanced for what you really needed - for me these are the full package all in one units for my Apple TV - for AirPlay - for tune in radio and tidal all playlists store in pre playlist and plays in hi res within HEOS
On the lid of the box, second(or bottom) row is the brand-name(initials) of a once-great *AUSTRALIAN* brand of consumer electronic gear, *AWA* which stood for Amalgamated Wireless Australasia, as the products of this brand were marketed throughout Australia and New Zealand. The products of this company were the *equal* in quality of those of Britain's EMI(the His Master's Voice brand) and many European brands except for Philips, which is grossly inferior to everything else everywhere. I heard about this lack of gapless playback in CD players. Apparently, it won't be a problem with DVD players and blu-ray players.

For the record, gapless playback is intact. It's just the ability to rewind and fast-forward from track-to-track isn't.
