  • At the end of the War of the Ring described in The Lord of the Rings following Sauron's definitive defeat, some orcs managed to save themselves and flee. What happened to these orcs? Were they able to continue living in Middle Earth? Could they establish cities for themselves? Or perhaps the question should be were orcs capable of surviving and building a civilization without a master to lead them?

@@benugdsen75 the show is terrible. I have seen enough to know it's a dumpster fire. I am no troll. I am no hater neither, but rather, a romantic for legendary stories and authors who created said story.
Lord of the rings 1, 2, and 3 are all 20+ years old and guess what, there are no movies or shows who can hold a candle to Peter Jackson's creation. I am an avid enjoyer of any medium of storytelling or entertainment.
But I also have the capacity to criticize and unfortunately the show bombed. It bombed so terribly in fact that it became a meme. A joke.
Also they could not handle to storytelling correctly and there's just so much wrong with the show rings of power. I'm not even going to elaborate. It's self explanatory really.
In saying that, hopefully nobody takes great offense although I maintain that ring of power is AWFUL
And for all the money they pumped into it, they still failed.
Money does not equate to better storytelling or visualization. It takes a special kind of talent that heavily lacks these days in the industry. It's why nothing can compare to the Peter Jackson films. Because they were done so well and incredibly well mind you.
Everything that's produced these days is nothing short of garbage. I only consume the finest of quality shows/entertainment. As a consumer how could I shoot for anything less?

Don't forget the coolest orc ever, the specialized little tracker-orc Frodo and Sam encounter in Mordor. He was a rebel and a deserter, mouthing of to his commanding officer saying he hoped the rumor was true that the chief Nazgul got skragged, then shooting him in the eye with his bow and running off on his own.

Most likely scenario: The orcs who fled the war got together into bands of various size, and having no other way to support themselves, fall into some form of banditry to survive. These bandit gangs are eventually put out of business by Aragon, Faramir, Eomer, and probably their heirs as well.
If we accept the Silmarillion's orc origin story, the rest of them, being Elvish in origin, dwindled over time as did the Elves which remained in Middle-Earth.
It is also possibly that their unsavory characteristics were a product of influence from Morgoth and Sauron, and when no longer under either master, these traits dwindled (maybe because orcs themselves began to prefer mates which least exhibited these traits) and after a while the orcs became much more like their original stock (whether Elvish or Mannish makes no difference).

I totally agree with your assessment, but with one caveat: should a band of orcs fall under someone, who is (preferably) both physically and/or mentally superior to them, like, perhaps a bunch of surviving uruk-hai (as mentioned in this video), and/or some (former) surviving higher ranking orcs, that can keep most of them in line, i could see them creating some sort of longer lasting settlement (or society), but, mostly hidden, of course. Beyond that, the naturally violent tendencies of orcs in general, will make that pretty much impossible in the long term. They might create some roaming bands, or gangs, here or there, but the constant infighting, combined with the fact, that most orcs aren't the brightest of lights in general, should eventually lead most of such groups to either self-destruction, or, if they become too much of an harassment to others, the local powers will try to seek them out and destroy, and/or route them, leading them ever more to diminishment.

After seeing all of the evidence provided in context, one of the main thoughts in response to the question “Are the orcs capable of creating some state of advanced civilization?” to my mind is…do they need to? Considering the prescribed notion that orcs need a common focal enemy or else they destroy themselves, I would argue that no, they really don’t need to even though they might be capable of it because they would focus on finding a common enemy above all else. They have no real motivation on their own merit to society-build. As to that prescribed notion I just mentioned, I would wonder…isn’t thieving and raiding against any encroaching other races/species of Middle Earth around an otherwise hidden mountain home base enough of a focal point to keep a group or maybe even a few groups together? I would think that, so long as they can stay hidden from others and the sun and can identify a common enemy to perform smash-and-grab raids and thefts against (perhaps even at night, which could account for a lack of record of their continued presence)…they have all they really need to survive as a species for as long as they can.

I enjoyed reading what you wrote. Thank you for your contribution! Yes it does seem like orcs don't really need to establish countries and cities but when you look at history you can also see that they have managed to keep cities standing successfully. But as you mentioned the likelihood of them surviving in small gangs after a war is also high.

When Sauron fell and the orcs were no longer under his control, I feel their violent selfish nature prevented them from organizing into large groups. The strongest among them would initially take leadership tribe roles but constant bickering and backstabbing prevented any significant progress. Without that focused evil commanding them they simply destroyed themselves and died out in their hiding holes.

  • @sarrjel

They might have returned to the mountains to the dwarves city and also formed towns but eventually died out. There is also that possibility that they headed up north with the trolls and the drakes. They are meat eaters and there is probably fish, seals, rabbits and other wildlife to hunt. I think that they knew their days were numbered and that if they remained in the area of Mordor and Gondor it would’ve been a mater of time before they would’ve been hunted down and killed.

Given that Tolkien said that LOTR was meant as a kind of mythology for Western Europe, and none of these other races exist in Western Europe today, it would seem that the orcs must have met the same fate as Hobbits, Dwarves, and Elves: extinction. Perhaps at the hands of Men.

Tolkien mentions somewhere taht in early years of 4th age, Aragorn and Faramir had a tough job in clearing out all the orc strongholds around Mordor. George RR Martin suggested that this implies they conducted an Orc genocide killing all female and child orcs as well, but I would see it more likely that after a defeat the surviving orcs would kill themselves and their children rather then surrender.

The fortresses in Mordor were just that, fortresses, not cities, so I doubt there were orc "children" in Mordor. What was left in Mordor would surely be places like Cirith Ungol: small forts with a few battalions of orcs occupying them.
It must be remembered that the troops that Gondor and Rohan had during the war were not very numerous and after the war things should not have improved much. Furthermore, there were surely still battles against the Haradrim and the Easterlings, so many troops would still be busy on other fronts, so that even small groups of orcs entrenched in small fortresses around Mordor must have been a great headache for Aragorn and company.

While not explicit evidence, there is a possible suggestion that Goblin-town like Gundabad was under Sauron's influence. In "The Peoples of Middle-earth" of the THoMe series, we are told: '*Orcs again multiply in secret and occupy many deep places (especially those anciently made by the Dwarves) in the Misty Mountains.* They do this so stealthily that none are aware of it, until they have great forces hidden and are ready to bar all the passes from Eriador into Anduin's vales, *according to the plan of their master in Dol Guldur*'. It is conceivable that the Great Goblin was secretly paying homage to the Dark Lord - the Goblins' alliance with the Wargs against the Woodmen may have been part of the Great Goblin acting out his will, as in hounding and driving out his enemies.
Otherwise I agree with the fact that Orcs were capable of surviving on their own. Even before 'Sauron, when he turned back to evil, had gathered into his service all the Orks that were scattered far and wide in the Northern world' ("The Nature of Middle-earth") we are told that Orcs who had escaped Morgoth's defeat had set up 'petty realms of their own' ("Morgoth's Ring"). That means as you yourself have said that they were capable of making up some settlements and maintaining them even in the absence of a Dark Power or some greater agent - like Saruman or the Nazgûl. They might survived far from the reach of the Free Peoples, making out brief sorties only from time to time following their master's overthrow. Keep the videos coming

Pffft, right... The last two orcs from Middle-Earth somehow made their way out of the realm of Arda. And they ascended into godhood without ever being found out about, chased down and completely destroyed by Eru Iluvatar or any of the Ainur.
And then they *conveniently* find their way through the Warp, and create the ORK race as some kind of nigh-indestructible fungal infection upon the Warhammer universe. And it spreads from world to world in the form of a monstrous horde of mindlessly violent orks.

I think any survivors would have eventually faded, since the death of the ring also killed magic. So they would have either died by fading, turned into elves by the fading of Morgoths power, then faded AS elves living on Middle Earth, or become(mainly in the case of the mixed Uruk-Hai) human after Morgoths taint faded from them. In a few generations, those Uruk-Hai whose taint-fading turned them human would have just been little tribes of humans who spoke Orcish and had an oddly orclike culture.

I think it would have been nice to have a theme of repentence once Sauron was defeated:
After the fall of Sauron, the orcs scattered and lived isolated lives. With time, the corruption began to fade. Then the orcs slowly earned the trust of men. Some became laborers in rural areas while others worked in the mines. Hatred between the races faded with time...

    • @fenrirgaming37
      @fenrirgaming37 5 місяців тому +1

I have to disagree with that assessment. While it's true that most orcs couldn't make it to the Black Gate, a majority of Mordor was rocked by earthquakes that formed massive fissures throughout the land, likely causing a large number of orcs, trolls, and uruks to fall to their demise. Let's also not forget the rivers of lava that flowed out of Mount Doom like water, and it's plausible that many more were trapped and consumed by the lava.
What few survivors there were, likely fled as far north as they could, and likely while surviving for a time, their violent tendencies, and lack of motivation to work together, likely meant that orcs died out. Uruks might survive longer, as they were able to work together much more cohesively as a whole compared to their orc cousins. But I doubt they survived long term either.

This will be a bit out of character me, whether that's good, or bad, but the thing I wonder is would there have been any place for them, after Sauron, and gow fans today would take that? Today, some would struggle to argue that it is unfair to vilify an entire people, regardless of what some of its representatives might have done, or the percentage of them that participated, yet in LotR, I totally imagine that no effort was made to take in Orc survivors, or "rehabilitate" them into a post-Sauron world. Every other living being hated them, and maybe rightly so, so one can assume that, like any other post-apocalypse, where the remaining zombies are just rounded up, killed, and burned, pogroms were likely instituted, even by kind King Elessar, to exterminate them, if only just to deprive a future evil mastermind their own convenient troops. I'm not saying he'd feel no pity, or even sympathy, but he'd still just wipe them all out.
I bring this up because D&D. They obviously borrowed/stole whole ideas from Tolkien, and other fantasy works, and in those times, it was practically acceptable that "whole" populations of people could just be intrinsically evil; there were good Drow, or maybe even Orcs, but the overwhelming majority of them were monstrous by design, and assumption. Their default society literally led them down that path, and those that couldnt walk it were eliminated. Meanwhile today, to varying degrees, these views don't sit well, even in works of fiction. Either they draw parallels to real people/inspirations, or even just the idea that there would be such a group doesn't sit well with readers of the work, and so efforts have been taken to rehabilitate their lore, and make them more neutral, with a taste of choice. Part of that, certainly, is because D&D is a game, and so active, and people may want to play a Drow without the expectation that every NPC will hate them, automatically, like they made the wrong choice, or a half-Orc who's origin isn't the same old trope it always was, but it makes me wonder how today would view whatever the fate of the Orcs was, and if Tolkien maybe left it specifically vague because he didn't know what future sensibilities might look like?

I wonder if Tolkien ever described in detail what orcs' physical appearance was like. I know the popular conception of artists are these really horrible looking creatures with pointy ears and sharp giant teeth. Perhaps in his mind they were closer in appearance to Elves and Humans, just uglier and coarser or something like that. It wouldn't be the first time people had gotten the look of his creations wrong. A lot of people think his Elves had pointed ears and the Professor quite clearly stated his Elves did not. Maybe ugly humans looking Orcs were able to integrate a little better into post-Sauron society though I still think they would eventually die out. I imagine the Dwarves conducting extensive campaigns to reclaim their former dwellings like Gundabad and Moria.

      Greeting,
If you allow me i will share my toughts on the rings and their power.
The power provided by the ring depends of the owners own power. Some creachures can be affected by the rings, other can affect the rings, or even ignore them, as in the case of Tom Bombandill. When he received the ring from Frodo, he didn't disapear or had other efect. Even Gandalf said that simply put, the ring was powerles in his possesion.
On the other hand when Frodo ask Galadriel to take the ring, under rtemendous temptation she refused, stating that if she take it she will be the new dark lord.
Now imagine you will try to recruit a dragon known for their greediness and selfishness. Most probably the dragon will simply take it for his own schemes. I will recall the encounter between Smaug and Bilbo. Even, as Smaug could't see Bilbo, he sensed the presence of the ring and try to take it from him.
Althout the rings are with formidable power we know that they are not the most powerful thing in middle earth. They can be destroyed, by dragons, or other meanings.
That brings me to conclusion that Sauron saw Smaug more as a treat that possible ally.
      Same situation with The Ballrog.
      Cheers

I don't think Orcs would have any inclination to build and maintain anything resembling civilisation. I consider them largely solitary nomadic creatures that generally just roam the countryside hunting for anything edible. And they would by default be using equipment looted from previous "meals".
I think the only circumstance where they can cooperate in any way is when compliance is forced upon them. Such as a bigger orc that have beaten up everyone several times over and taken all the best gear. This is the orcs natural state.
It is only when a non Orcish mastermind enters the equation that orcs become team players but it is still under the threat of violence/death.
An orc needs to be told "do this or I'll rip your head off!" and believe it in order to manufacture anything beyond a pointy stick.

Ok I have a non canonical theory. If we go along with the video game SOM and SOW continuity which is heavily hinted to be part of the MOVIE universe and NOT THE BOOK UNIVERSE. The wraith of Celebrimbor is set free and flees east after the defeat of Sauron. I have a theory that the orcs fled east and likely fell under the dominion of Celebrimbor. This leads into the canceled third Shadow game where Eltariel goes east and discovers what has become of the orcs and Celebrimbor. I am well aware that these games are not canon however I would find it fun to play in such a story.

Tolkien's Christianity might be a source for developing a response to the question 'What happened to the Orcs after Sauron's defeat?' I think Tolkien would have taken his cue from the Bible, as to the fate of the Orcs after the demise of Sauron. In Tolkien's legendarium, Orcs were mutated creatures whose original gene-line was part-Elf. Tolkien mentions 'Orc-Men' and 'Man-Orcs', indicating clearly that Orcs were a hybrid creature that was out of keeping with Iluvatar's intentions. Indeed, of all the misdeeds of Melkor, Tolkien has it that the creation of Orcs was the one that most grieved Eru-Iluvatar.
May I provide an overview of the Biblical account, before offering my theory, please?
The Biblical account has it that in ancient times before the Flood there were numerous species of creatures on Earth which resembled humans but had non-human blood. Such creatures had had interbred so much with humans that barely 8 pure-bred humans remained. This being so, and that the hybridized creatures (aka, the Nephilim) being so evil, that God had to destroy the world with a global Flood. A second incursion occurred some generations after the Flood, giving rise to various species: the Anakim, Emim, Zamzumim, etc. Generally, they are referred to as the sons of the Nephilim. The accounts given in the Book of Judges has it that there were entire cultures, such as the Amorites, living in the land of Canaan that had various degrees of this Nephilim blood in them. As such, God instructed the Israelites under the Judges and later, King Saul, to genocide such beings.
My theory: During the 4th Age, the ''time of men'', the orcs would have been genocided by King Elessar and his descendants.

I think some of them probably did. Maybe the goblins too. Not certain if the huge trolls are still alive or not.But I would be okay if they were still alive. They are living beings. They deserve a chance to live without Sauron or Morgoth. Maybe they could restore Mordor and make it full of life for them. Would take a lot of time. But maybe they could do it if they choose to.

Orcs were an unnatural race, created from elves tortured by Sauron until they became a twisted shell of what they were. Goblins and trolls were created from the beginning, without Sauron's involvement. So it's unlikely for the orcs to survive for long after Sauron's fall.

i never read the books , just saw the movies about a 100 times now
but ever since that last '' bad series '' , i see the orcs very differently ...
i always thought they where made out of '' magic / nothingness '' ,
but the tv-series showed me that they were Elves themselves ,
now i look at the complete series from a different side
and it's nice to watch the movies with the mindset Of the orc being Elves '' gone bad '' ...
it gives the movies something they needed , that probably the books have in spades , context
for this reason , i actually really liked the series and what the added to the movies , if you hadn't read the books
sorry for the long winded rant to explain a simple thing ...

Regular orcs might have gone extinct, but what about the Uruk-Hai? They had much more discipline AND were kind of overall superior to regular Orc except that regular works had better night vision.
I could believe that Rex probably went extinct, or eventually became slaves of their stronger counterparts.
I find it hard to believe that Uruk-Hai went extinct after the war of the ring both two genealogies seem to be pretty damn resilient and highly intelligence perhaps they would try to regroup and replenish their numbers and await another opportunity to wipe out the humans Without any outside interference.
Perhaps their age of the orc came centuries after the war of the ring, if not 1000 years after.
Ox are like cockroaches they’re very hard to completely stamp out and I would imagine Uruk-Hai would be 10 times more difficult than the average run of the mill Orcs to exterminate completely.
Plus Uruk-Hai’a military might rivals rivals humans it’s not surpasses them. Thanks to their former masters Uruk-Hai have gained much valuable knowledge and talented warriors, some of which may even express tactical ingenuity. A lot of people forget that Uruk-Hai or practically designed to be superior to other orcs, and were practically tailored to exterminate humanity. I would imagine the strongest and most clever, or those with wisdom and ambition would pose a massive threat to the free peoples of middle earth.

    • @fenrirgaming37
      @fenrirgaming37 5 місяців тому

I have to agree somewhat with that. However, the Uruk-Hai's biggest hurdle would be their small numbers. Remember, only a small number survived the Battle of Helm's Deep, and those few fled to Mordor. While it is true that the uruk's were bred to fight humans equally if not better, they didn't breed as fast as orc's. While they did learn teamwork, tactical and strategic skills from Saruman, they just did not have the numbers to really make a difference.
Also, let's not forget that the uruk's and orcs did not like each other, so it's likely that their already small numbers were reduced even further due to infighting, treachery, or sheer hatred. While it's possible that the uruk's did outlive the orcs, I doubt they were able to survive long term, as it is more than likely that ranger's actively hunted surviving orcs and uruks after the war.
