    Great explanation, Mike. When I first started shooting, I was baffled by this. I could not understand why my photos looked the way they did and did not realize that no magic had been performed on them yet. Thanks to your channel, I figured all of that out and now I think, emphasize think, that I have it figured out. Thanks for all that you do. I hope all is well.

      Haha! Yes, I remember switching across to RAW and thinking my images looked awful!! Takes a while but they do get there in the end! Great to hear my videos and tutorials have helped as well! 👍
      Lots more to come as well dude so hopefully you can keep learning with me as the years go by!! 👌

    Hey Mike! As usual great explanation of the topic. I started my amateur photography shooting both raw and jpeg with my canon t7i. What I need to learn next is how to edit those raw files to polish even more my photographies. Any plans of a video on this topic?

      Thanks Nazir! Good to hear you have all of those initial images you took as RAW files. Then you have lots to work with and hone in your editing skills with.
      I have some plans for some editing tutorials in the new year.

    I shoot raw and use a nosy a7iii. Your videos are always well thought out and clear and concise, thanks for sharing your knowledge.. An interesting video topic would be using camera raw editors. I usually just open in LR but I understand there are other camera raw editors that might be better, but not sure the pluses and minuses .

    Shoot lossless compressed raw when using my Nikon D3S or my D500 and lossless compressed raw + Jpeg on my X-T3. Jpegs out of the Fuji are incredible !!

    When I moved to digital, my first camera only offered JPG. When I upgraded, I stayed with JPG until taking an adult ed course. Switched to RAW almost immediately and I’ve never looked back.

    Finding your videos very helpful, entertaining and informative. Thanks. You said the raw file includes some processing; does this include the white balance setting? I assume it does.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 роки тому

      Thanks very much Kevin! When you import the RAW file to your editing program of choice, it will set the white balance to what you had it in camera, then you can change it to what you want.

    Hi Mike. I take RAW files and have done for the last ten years or so. Editing a jpg is fine but, if you try to re-edit the file, the quality rapidly falls off. I like to be able to re-edit my files, as my editing technique improves over time, so RAW is my choice. I have a deskful of external hard drives to accommodate them - Sony A7RIII 42M files!

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 роки тому

      Haha!! I think the camera companies are in cahoots with the memory production companies...
      Kingston "we need to sell more hard drives."
      Sony "Got it...here's the new camera with a 61Mp sensor"
      😆😆😆
      I'm the same, got a drawer full of hard drives and still need more space!!
      RAW definitely gives more latitude when editing...and like you I've been editing RAW as well for years...it just gives us so much more to work with...
      Thanks for watching 😁👍

    As a beginner I used to shoot jpeg and raw but now my cannon is set for raw only. Just need to learn what do with all that data in post processing 🙈. That’s a whole new ball game.

    • @mikesphotography

      It is isn't it! The best bet is to just start editing in something like lightroom or capture one. Like with photography, the more you edit, the better you become.

    I've started shooting jpeg only in my A73 to make me learn about getting the right white balance and other settings as close as possible to where they need to be otherwise when I shoot raw I tend to start editing to much and I only really post on FB and Instagram anyway.

    • @mikesphotography

    I shoot exclusively raw. From my a6500 I get arw files. Are those compressed raw? As I have understood uncompressed raw from A7iii is bigger even if both cameras have 24 mp sensors.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 роки тому

      I'm not sure if they are compressed or uncompressed RAW files...it would be interesting to test them out to see how much they can be pushed and pulled around compared to the two different ones from the A7iii...might be a topic for a new video...🤔

    Limpid explanation, Mike, with good mention of “so what factor’. Always shoot raw (uncooked); my accountant says I should try “cooked” for some reason😁. You came close to mentioning Adobe’s “DNG” format when mentioning their converter. Why do you think Adobe’s attempt at an industry wide “RAW” format was not widely adopted (like their document PDF format)?
    BTW, nice framed image on wall - adds a bit of something to the set, but would excel IMO with a smaller matting surround, or bigger photo.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Paul...I see you're reminding me of my limited vocabulary...😆😆😆
      I was going to mention DNG but it would have made the video much longer ... and I was running out of time yesterday.
      It's a shame it wasn't adopted. I think each of the engineering teams have their own opinions and want to put their own touches to RAW files so most of the camera companies have kept to their own types...then they can also claim that theirs is superior because of x, y and z.
      My printer is small...😆😆😆 ... but I will be getting a bigger image printed for it soon. Thanks for the advice...been wondering how to build an interesting background so I'm adding things slowly...it'll probably be a work in progress for a while yet! And any ideas would be welcome! 😁👍

      @@mikesphotography I recall your use of “limpid” in a prior vid, so thought I’d bring it up again. Suggest changing set prop(s) to compliment different vid topics. Keeping background interesting but not distracting would be a plus. BTW, hope the meteor shower is visible in your locale this week so you’ll have a shot at more great astro images.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 роки тому +1

      Haha! Yes I remember, I definitely got the reference! 😆😆
      I'll see what I can do with the background...I might even try different focal lengths as well to mix it up a bit...🤔

    RAW - I would go a little deeper. raw should be the direct read-out of the sensor ... but it's not. Similar to Postscript files (CMYK), there should be three relatively low-resolution Black'n'Colour channels (RGB). Recalculating from the Bayer sensor grid creates a kind of virtual high resolution, but a real bigger file size. all details are only interpolated. This could or should be done in post production.
    With proprietary raw formats, deficiencies in the hardware are concealed and income is secured through fees for license rights.

      For a full frame camera like the A7, you're going to struggle to get lenses for under $200. The only real way to do it is to get manual lenses, like some of the vintager canon or nikon lenses...like the canon FD 28mm f2.8 and the FD 50mm f1.8. Then there are the samyang/rokinon lenses.
      The cheapest sony full frame lens for the A7 is the 50mm f1.8 and that starts at $248 amzn.to/2IJmXIo

    What is hdr and dro settings on the a7iii

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 роки тому

      They are settings that optimise the jpeg files...I might have to do a quick video on that setting soon.
      From what I believe DRO is dynamic range optimisation so it gives you the optimal settings for the composition you have chosen to give you the best dynamic range and HDR (I think) will take a few images and blend them together in the camera...however, as it is a jpeg and not a raw file, it would be better to take 3 bracketed RAW files and then blend them in post so you get even more dynamic range.
      Thanks for watching 😁👍
