You say now doesn't exist because it is an infinitely small slice of time. No matter where you cut it out of time it is always smaller than that. Your definition may be causing the paradox. What if it is always now and time is what doesn't exist or only exists in the mind. Now always exists and we are remembering it. There is a state of mind in which we are not conscious of any past. We are not remembering. We are in the present. Time is created as awareness moves through the now.

I think this is true. Now never moves. If you think about the wheel on The Price is Right, now is like the arrow. Time would act like the wheel, but the wheel being infinite. So now is constantly falling between the increments of time as it moves.

The present moment is not a tiny amount of time. The present moment is what we experience when we stop thinking. Without thought time, in any quantity, no longer exists. Then we are in the state of timeless presence. I just subscribed to your channel. I think it is really cool!

What truly exists is eternity, where there is no time. I remember back in 2008 I had a vivid (undoubtful) insight in which I definitely realized that time does not exist. I had this realization at a very deep level (no psychedelics involved), so much so that I didn't think I'd ever not be able to semantically recall this realization. I can still remember the realization, but, alas, without the semantics.

What you've described here is the very well defined problem of integral calculus. You solve for the area under the curve, in this case, time, or the experience of your life, by breaking down your awareness into smaller and smaller pieces until you approach the limit of infinity. In other words The integral of the function of x from a to b is the sum of the present moment awarenesses to the curve at each interval of change in x as the number of present moment awarenesses goes to infinity.
It's a limit that can never be reached. It's just a theoretical way to solve the problem of time.

I am enjoying your videos so much. Keep them coming. On this one I was reminded of the following word by Alan Watts: "For in the instant that one grasps the moment to get something from it, it seems to disappear. The reason is perhaps that enjoyment is a function of nerves rather than muscles, and that nerves receive automatically and passively, whereas muscles grasp actively. Enjoyment is always gratuitous and can come no other way than of itself, spontaneously. To try to force it is, furthermore, to try to experience the future before it has arrived, to seek the psychological result of attending to the present experience and thus short-circuiting or cutting out the experience itself. Obviously, however, the person who attempts to get something from his present experience feels divided from it. He is the subject and it is the object. He does not not see that he is that experience, and that trying to get something from it is merely self-pursuit."

Your mind trick you!!! The present is always the unique moment that exist. You are trying to focus in the present but really your mind are checking the next moment, so you never get there. So you are confusing this moment with the really close next moment. The mind is very clever!!! So the future moment doesn't exist! Shocking Insight, the present is the only existing time. This moment, not that moment, this moment. Another clue, this moment, this time, does not freeze is always changing, do not expect to grab this moment because that moment has already passed but now we are again and always in this moment. An intriguing though that certainly a bit intelligent person like you can understand especially if you can not rely so much in the mind, slow or stop the mind chattered, and feel the present moment.

Frame-by-frame perception is all mind can handle. That's what's speaking in this video. When you "saw" the frames, you've glimpsed in between them 2:57 ...and something (not mind) is aware of both simultaneously. Frames & the spaces.
Forget Bentinho...you are soooooooooo close! Keep looking in between the frames. In between.

I always thought that there may be millions of years in between each frame of reality, but we're not aware of it. Not sure if I mentioned this thought in the video, but I was always thinking about this as a child. I will definitely take more time to focus toward the present moment to find the blanks, if there are any. Thank you. :)

When you think about now, it is like, now has already gone. Every perception we have is in our memory, so there is no present, everything is past. Signals are collected by your sensors and representations of them propagate to your brain which processes them. There are movements of action potentials and they take a little time. Processing signals also takes time, so untill you perceive something, that thing has already gone. And stimuli from the environment also take some time to travel from their sources to your sensors.
What you are seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting or touching is a representation of waves in your memory when those waves have already gone.
But the past is something that depends on the memory. If the memory exists so the past, but if the memory fails then the past can be destroyed or altered. This is a deep discussion.
That is just a thought and I could be extremely wrong.

You have to fully be present without thinking of anything, there is nothing more relaxing and energizing, it may not last long, but when you're there, its like being free, but you can achieve this state of timeless momentum, this stillness in the present, if i did it, you certainly can too, anyway, thank you for your wisdom always. Which made me think that since every experience you have is in the past, does that mean that the you who you are attached to kind of has to get out of your own way in order to be truly authentic?

Right it's not living in the present moment or time it's really living in the present "thought".. it's just a way to clear your head.. so if you were raped let's say last week, basically don't think about it and if you have 10 more years to live don't think about it either..this is why animals are so happy because they live in the present thought.. but the challenge becomes what if you love your past and t makes you happy or what if you are looking forward to the future for some exciting vacation.. why can't you dwell on that? I'm starting to think that all this living in the moment and spiritual enlightment with no self is really for people who have had really fucked up traumatic lives.. in that case it's better to kill your ego and not your physical self

I've not finished the video yet but I had a thought about something I heard, about the only part of time that exists is the present. That made a lot of sense because the future is always ahead and the present is always passing behind but then I thought about the present which led me into a paradox. If you try and measure the present moment there's always going to be time either side of it, even if its 0.0001 of a second and on and on 0.00000000000001 of a second, it goes on forever so where is the present? It can't exist because its always moving behind but never reachable. Trippy.

the issue is you /we "look for" the present moment , instead of "being in the awareness "which is happening in the "present" ! Things are always happening in the present no matter what ! and also "persona" is the one trying to focus , no the awareness which is in the background -this is my insight for last 24 or so hours ! for now, I am typing in -my whole is using my persona to cultivate words etc but in the background am aware of the activity by "fully present" which gives a far higher calmness which is detached in a way to the activity itself ! Hopefully through practice I can be more present :P

I don't agree. Unless you mean grasping a single frame which is impossible because it changes all the time. I have seen the video of Bentinho. I can't disagree, but I also don't agree with this concept of reality frames. It seems too made up and too artificial. For me, reality seems fluid and infinite in all directions. I think just as you can infinitely zoom out, you can also infinitely zoom in. In space as well as in time. So frames can't exist.
If I try to be in the moment, it's an act of continuously becoming aware of what's happening while continuously letting it go. The mind wants to wander off unless you are in a state of flow. If I do it right, it really feels like 'the present moment' and it is never the same.

Zooming in and out does not mean that frames cant exist. Think of an infinite picture that you can zoom in and out of. Time is illusionary. One such concept that supports this snapshot theory and illusionary time is the fact that we are orbiting around the sun, which is in a solar system orbiting in a galaxy, which is orbiting in a universe. Each location is a different moment in time. Each location is a snapshot or frame that we are constantly moving through. Each location contains its own vibration which can be tuned into. Each occurance in each location is happening simultaneously but appears linearly because of how we perceive it or tune into it. It's because of the simultaneous nature of things that time can be experienced in different ways.... stretched or shortened.

Your true conciousness (the blank emptiness) exists outside time, it is eternal, no beginning no end. What you experience as serial time is actually the illiusion created by your thoughts as thoughts can only be conceptualize in 3D, hence to go from one thought to another (as your brain can only think about one thing at a time), creates that illusion of serial time, i.e. the 'movement' from one throught to another creates serial time, but the thing in your that is empty blank conciousness that you can feel even in the presence of no THOUGHT (words or images in the mind's eye) transcends time. It is PURE DURATION. Eternal.

I love your vids. You're the only person I've "met" who has pondered the same type of questions I have since an early age. We probably both drove our parents bats with these.
What you're trying to do with time, and the angle from which you're approaching it, sounds similar to Zeno's Dichotomy Paradox.
From my perspective, the NOW is an experience of being. You are trying to "see" it, or be aware that you are aware of it when it happens--which is a mental activity--a separation from experience. I know you've had a Satori-like experience in your "past" (hee hee). If you recapture this state of being, your perception of Now should be clear. Looking at you looking at Now will forever capture you in the paradox of creating a timeline in order for you to perceive the existence or epistemology of one. By trying to detach from the moment in order to view it, you create a lag (time line) in your thinking, which will not reveal the truth.

  • @Bonpu

From my experience time is just the virtual canvas on which the mind necessarily operates, like an empty excel sheet. It is as unreal as the "me" (which inhabits time). Tolle's famous "now", the experienced, absolute now, is no moment in time but the realized unreality of it. This also affects conventional ideas of continuity and of cause and effect. Without a meaningful past, which is a mere mental story, I am literally just "now", this, dying and reborn every millisecond.

  • @stoic_guides

The present moment is a generalized term for the now, which isn't an exact quantified time frame but rather a gist of what is taking place right now with you personally. I believe there is an actualized universal now, but we are not capable of ever fully experiencing it with our senses in the moment, as fast as our cognitive abilities and perceptions are, they are still only realizing an echo or shadow of the actual event, so in a way it's an illusion, though still steeped in reality in that it relates to us facts about what is real in the world as we know it. So I agree in the way that we can never experience fully the actual present moment, I nevertheless can't deny it's existence, or it's revelation.

    • @TheDiamondNet
      @TheDiamondNet  8 років тому

+Hari Patel How long does the present moment last for? Is it one second, one millisecond, or less than that? Because the present moment has no clear duration, you can never be directly focused on it. It's always infinitely far away as a projected memory from the past. It's a non-point. Sort of like if you're doing a mathematical graph, a point on the graph has no length, width, or depth; so it has no dimension. It is our past projections that make the present moment have context. But if you look carefully, you will find that all of the things that you focus on as the present moment are projections of "present moments" that have already passed.

    • @haripatel2586
      @haripatel2586 8 років тому +1

But you are using a concept of time to define it. Infinity again is a mathematical concept and non existant. By direct observation the present moment is timeless and the definitive here and now. There is no merge of past into future because that would accure a concept of time. I could be a mistaken, but isn't this video a concept which can not be experienced in our awareness. Thanks though i am very interested on your opinons and it does stir up the pot

    • @TheDiamondNet
      @TheDiamondNet  8 років тому +1

Hari Patel To be honest, I'm not sure. I'll have to do more observation. It could be that this just made sense to me logically. It sort of gives me like an "aha! I figured it out!" moment. The idea that existence is an illusion (the illusion of Maia) never made sense to me largely because of what you said in your last message. So, I felt like I finally "figured it out" which is logical and not experiential. But I feel that there is something to it. So, I'll have to do more observations of the present moment, while removing my assumption that there is (or is not) a present moment. Perhaps, it's more accurate to say that I've come to a place where I'm not sure whether or not the present moment exists.

Saying the present moment doesn’t exist because time only exists in frames reminds me of Zeno’s arrow paradox: ….“for motion to occur, an object must change the position which it occupies. He gives an example of an arrow in flight. He states that at any one (duration-less) instant of time, the arrow is neither moving to where it is, nor to where it is not. It cannot move to where it is not, because no time elapses for it to move there; it cannot move to where it is, because it is already there. In other words, at every instant of time there is no motion occurring. If everything is motionless at every instant, and time is entirely composed of instants, then motion is impossible.” Similarly, if the present moment can’t exist because it’s infinitesimally small, then it’s similar to the dichotomy paradox: a racer can never reach the finish line because first she must travel half the distance from the start to the finish, and then she must travel half the remaining distance again and again forever. There’s always a very small distance to be halved, so the finish line can never be crossed. QED
I believe it’s more accurate to say we can’t truly experience the present moment because our nervous system takes a small amount of time to process sensory input, so by the time we’re aware of any moment, that moment is already in the past.

I think that using this contemplation about the present moment not existing, you just managed to define it indirectly. It does not exist in the sense that it might not be possible to capture it in a paradigm where you are the observer and the present moment is the observed. Present moment appears where the duality of the observer and observed is dissolved and in such state of consciousness present moment is You.

While not prioritizing it so, I did come to a similar realization when contemplating 12 am & 12 pm...As soon as the moment is, it is in the process of becoming past and exclusive of "before" so 12 am is the midnight designation and 12pm is "afternoon"... I think the notion of the present MOMENT is just that, an ITERATION (see definition) = a repeating cycle...of seconds, units of time. Being present IMHO is being as aware as possible. Bill Murray has spoken about this (on UA-cam) convincingly, to me, regarding his not taking any mind-altering substances so as to fully be here the remainder of his time.

I loved this query into what the present moment might be! Just keep in mind that maybe this is why they don't call it the "present few seconds" or "the present millisecond". I believe it's not about the exact amount of linear time in which the present moment lies, it's all about the ability to just be present in the moment and not live in the mind, chasing every thought form. Then, in presence, or awareness, the present moment will lead to the next, and the next. Analyzing what the present moment is actually just another thought form. Not that there's anything wrong with it. Great video, Emerald!!!!

I think there is something psychoanalytical going on. Look up Lacanian concept of split. It may be about being split and mind being disected between the part that imagines "now" and the one that experiences now. Since they are not synced, split, this phenomenon is felt. Otherwise, it would have been smooth. But tge next question is that why this split occured? This disconnection and detachment of consciousness from the physical time of now. A sense of reality that checks whether a time is in memory/imagery/daydream or a time in the now. So being real (about an experience) means being now (of tgat experience). A reality check. So why is Now considered non real? Why does this reality check invokes a micro-panic? Which feels like that gap between the monents of time.
Hope I am not saying nonesense.

Can someone think something that they lack the words for saying?
The present moment, I suspect, is nothing but the wordless, idealess, conceptless experience. No wonder most spiritual traditions teach that we are all one. Since how would one individual's
conceptless experience differ from another individual's conceptless experience?
How does a thought that lacks all words differ from another thought that lacks all words?

I keep thinking, if you went back in time, how would you know when to come back? like if I live for 8 years in the past, will I have to come back to 8 years after when I left now? or does the present not move if I come back to the same time I left. it begs the question that if the past is written and the future is malleable, what if we convinced our subconscious that time doesn't exist?

Ok i have been suffering from sleep paralysis for 15 years and even wrote papers for my psych 101 class.(yeah it's Intro course but I learned a lot). I hate to say it but, all existential/metaphysical phenomena are 1: neurological and 2: spiritual. We all carry invisible burdens in life and in one way or another they will return in brain wave anomalies(pre oobe) and the sub concious manifestation (post hypnogagia): this is a spiritual phenomena and one has to believe in a higher power. I leave it at that. Bless you.

+JP Aldana Well, there are certainly good reasons to believe that it is a spiritual phenomenon. If I had to bet on it, I would fall in that camp. But I think it's always important to recognize the fact that we as humans can only know but so much about the nature of reality. So, I try to keep an open mind to all possibilities. But I notice that you say that you "suffer" from sleep paralysis. I have had mighty uncomfortable experiences with it, but I always looked at it as a really interesting experience. I wasn't always happy with what was happening during the experience, but I always saw it as an overwhelmingly positive thing that (given the choice) I wouldn't want to get rid of. I see it as unlocking another potential human feature and get excited for the ability to explore myself (and potentially another dimension) more deeply.

The way we perceive time in this 3rd dimension is seen as linear from our point of view, I've often pondered that at higher realities or dimensions, time doesn't exist. I guess objectively the present moment doesn't exist, but subjectively, we can still be totally in the present moment if that makes sense. I feel like in deep meditation, time almost seems to stop or become eternal, because you become so aware of "now" that you don't even think about the past present moment

As a child, I came to a similar conclusion that the present moment doesn't exist because it's infinitely small, which I now think is incorrect. The fact that it's infinitely short doesn't mean it's zero or non-existent. It would be like saying that space doesn't exist because every single point in space is infinitely small. I think we can't perceive the present moment because our brain needs longer than an infinitely short time to detect and realize the outside stimuli and its own mental/emotional state. And we constantly move forward in time, so by the time we realize our experiences, the moment had already passed. But I believe it should still be a very real moment, and the fact we can no longer access it doesn't mean it seizes to exist. Perhaps analogically, if we lived in the universe where the movement in space would only be possible in one direction, we wouldn't automatically say the space we left behind us no longer exists just because we can't go back.
I hope I don't sound too ignorant. There's a lot of physics involved, which I have only a very basic understanding of. If someone knows more about spacetime, feel free to correct me!

Hello, I like your videos. Our concept of time comes from the solar/lunar cycles. The planetary bodies have very precise cycles that determine day/night and the seasons. Once man became aware of these cycles in his physical reality, then he could prepare for winter, and this helped his ability to survive. A time to sow, harvest and reap. We are disconnected from nature in cities and thus lose this basic understanding.
The universe is unending, both when we look outward with telescopes, or inward with powerful microscopes. Likewise the present moment is fleeting, and seemingly endless.

Time is like falling. I think it's gravity. There is a dimension (or three) right-angled to the 3rd dimension, and it flows in both directions, but because of some massive higher dimensional object displacing time in the future direction, we're falling towards it, with nothing to brace ourselves on or slow it. If time really is "speeding up" as sometimes it feels, then maybe we haven't reached terminal velocity yet. This is a really cool concept until you realize that one day...splat.

Our consciousness is always a step "behind" us. As you said, by the time we are aware of a moment in any conscious way, it is over (doesn't exist). Our bodies, however, would seem to exist in a sort of "unconscious present" before our minds catch up. I guess when I look in the mirror, I will never see myself as I truly "am". In fact, I will never see anyone as they truly "are", will I?

Interesting thought , dear one 🤔
From the ego's POV, you may be quite correct.
Yet... the ego does not exist.
As you and I both know from experience, when the ego dissolves, there is only being.
And being, is the eternal NOW, out side of time or mental perception of any sort.
    And so, all is relative.
Tell this one a single thing the mind believes is true, and the true Self's being will prove it false lol
BEING the true higher Self, resolves every seeming contradiction into infinite, irreducible reality.
And reality, IS the only true truth. For everything else but SELF, starts and ends. And anything that starts and ends, does not mathematically exist in the face of infinity.
What percentage of eternity is a trillion years time? Zero lol
There are no variations of being, only being.
And as there are no variations of our true being, only one non-individual whole, no measurements of any sort can exist.
One cannot even SAY, "I experienced ego dissolution" until the ego kicks back in to say so lol
And so... I myself (ego smiles and winks) have decided to dream lucidly, and be as I wish to be, since none of this truly exists as REAL from the enlightened state's POV.
Funny... the ego must think on the enlightened state, FOR the enlightened state, as the enlightened state has no thoughts on the matter lol

Our brains anyway have a dealy so when you perceive something its already past. But present moment is not about perceiving.
    The point is in next:
To swich conciseness from mind to senses, so when i focus for exc on my eyes and what im seeing my mind go from most to absolutely quite.
And if you do that when you close your eyes and stare in the blackness, you are not using your mind. And if you dissociate even from what you are seeing, you are not even use your senses, and become only point of conciseness in nothingness. You are aware, you are in present moment now, and you are not perceiving anything. Just beeing.
I advice anyone to try this, this is true meditation, even if you can only do it for a very short time, just practice it.

What if Reality is a interconnected differentiated flow of existence (movement , energy) and time is the rate of a specific flow of existence (earth rotating on itself and revolving around the sun for example ) .Then being in the present moment (in sync) would be to tune in into one specific flow of existence without resistance ( thoughts for example) ...In the analogy of the picture frame ; the frame itself is the resistance (turbulence, vortex, center of energy) to the flow...The more you focus on the point (particle , atom , energy field, energy vortex, picture frame ,Ego) the more everything looks fragmented and paradoxical , the more you open to the flow of life the more everything feels interconnected and limitless...

Just as there are no "other" times, there are no "other" people or things. Time and the moment don't exist but you do. But this so called you or me is not our own. The "open ability to be itself" shares itself and we share "it". We can never only be ourself. You didn't start yourself and you can't stop what never was/is "your" "own". Things are only things to you but things are things to anyone/everyone. To Thee Self in and as all here ever was and will be. Don't forget to read some Nisargadatta once in a while if not often. Is it better to be open or closed? Dependence on thought and sense for what seems real leads to degrees of feeling closed. But everything is open. No matter what degree of closed there is, openness is here. Even if we can't feel it in depression we have to be open to feeling depression. Or could say openness is open to feeling depression because openness is open to getting used to feeling and believing in depression or anything. Just because we are not used to feeling open does not mean it is not here. Everything is taking place with and within openesss.

I arrived at the same conclusion. There is only the future or the past. The present is an infinitesimal length of time that can be perceived at greater and greater resolution dependent on how accurate your measuring apparatus is. If it's our human perception then the resolution is rather course, and an electronic device is limited by it's operating frequency, which may be much faster than the human perception, but will still have physical limitations, based on the laws of physics. So the present, in time, cannot be truly defined and can only be a redundant term.

  • @DoeBoi2525

time is like a river, constantly flowing and changing, how do you measure that? you can't objectively measure it... just like measuring electrons? (winking face), in that sense you're right, time doesn't exit, but keeping going, then measuring time is only a reference frame, a representation of something immeasurable, now if you can accept that, then the only certainty is the uncertainty nature of reality, change is the only constant in all forms and even thought forms

It doesn't make sense to say the present moment doesn't exist, when you talked and made this video you did it in the present moment, im writing this right now in the present moment. Everything is always NOW. Thinking about what the present moment is, and mixing it with the construct of time can create confusion I can see that. The Diamond Net you know I sure do wish I did, but I work with marketing for small businesses, unfortunately my savvy for UA-cam/online marketing is very low outside of social media which I gotta learn soon. And it really seems like a rather tough market to penetrate (but that's only a reflection of how I see my strengths and weaknesses factoring into the matter).
I have fundamental recommendations and mindsets that I use for the marketing I do, but it doesn't seem to translate over well.
First off focus on building relationships with those who are key to spreading information amongst groups of people via word of mouth, Pastors, "women of the town" (you either know what that term means or not haha, it's not deragatory but it's a specific kinda person that exist in every large social group), politicians etc. These people do the most marketing for you which is wonderful. As you can see this doesn't line up too much, but it might be worth consideration to spark new creative ideas.
As you know marketing is the whole entire name of the game pretty much.
As such you have the information down, your videos are great, with minor recommendations for improvement that are rather insignificant, but yea I think my best recommendation is shift your focus to at least 80% being figuring new creative ways to market.
And you should also try to market it like a traditional business! Even though you'll only get people from your area that's a good idea as well.
In summary, I'm not too sure, and I don't wanna pretend I am. Idk how youtubers do it, but I'm rooting for you and I do know the difficulties involved.
Just market like fucking crazy and you oughta be good.
So much of the product is packaging and how you found out about it.

100%, time is a mind made concept and the mind is also a concept. Not long ago I had my dark night of the soul. It was quite scary at first. But now, even saying that, I realize that its my ego who’s saying I had a dark night. It’s like the ego steps in to explain the unexplainable. Very useful thing I guess. Haha. I know that I am but I know that who I thought I was is non existent. Who I thought i was is as arbitrary as a character in a dream. This whole thing has blown my mind out completely out. But really, there is no mind in the first place. What a relief! It was like the weight of the world was lifted. This must be what Jesus was talking about, the Peace that passeth all understanding. The whole Gospel of Jesus makes perfect sense from a Non dual perspective. We ARE jesus, we are Buddha, we are the message, we are THAT. It’s beautiful. It’s the Good news. But even that is…… silence……
