  • An old film from 1963 showing North Berwick and Tantallon Castle.
The Bass Rock features in it with Fred Marr 1.07 arriving with the post on the Girl Pat.
Chris Marr is also seen 8.06 mending or making a creel by the yacht club steps not sure who the onlookers are but if anybody knows it would be interesting.
The old train station is at 3.16 with the train delivering the latest batch of tourists.
And the sadly missed open air pool in all its glory 4.55 with not a seat to be had as the aqua show and gala is underway with I think Drew Kennedy on the trampoline .
Not sure who the bathing suit beauties are so if you know that would be a find.
Dave Willis at the Pavillion doing what he did for the camera.
Golf Club making at 7.38 with my Uncle Charlie Thompson balancing out the club at Ben Sayers factory.
Trips around Fidra and the Bass Rock cost 4 bob and 2 bob for a child ( think its £12.50 now )
And the Seabird Center charge £22.00 and £17.00 for a fast track tour.
The boats of the time were operated by David Tweedie seen at 10.37 and there were three boats running with the St Nicholas in shot .
I think its Tom Brown at the helm of the launch going out to the Bass no doubt making up some salty tales on the way.
At 11.23 you can see the line of beach huts on the west Bay.
Lovely old film of a time now sadly passed.

Beautiful. Used to live there and go to all these places. Knew the Marr's well and often went out with them on that launch AND I was probably a part of that sandcastle competition !

`I worked at J R Dale and Sons, Seacliff and lived at Seacliff in 1976. The Bass was green as in this video back then but the Gannets seem to have multiplied many-fold by today, because the Bass is bereft of vegetation and looks like an iceberg sticking skywards out of the depths.
A whole lot has changed since those days and not much for the better. The old landmarks and buildings are mostly all still there though. Love going back to see what are now literally old friends and haunts. I was only 18 when I stayed there, nearly 400 miles from home and long before mobile phones. I remember seeing the first Ford Fiesta in the garage opposite the turn into the High Street. Had to go to the kiosk at Whitekirk to phone home once a week.

My dad was friends with Chris Marr and grew up in North Berwick. I wouln't be surprised if he was in this footage somewhere. in fact i'm pretty sure he's the guy at 8:15 with his arms up holding the metal pole. He would have been 19 or 20 in this. Stayed at their (the Marrs) B&B in the 90's and took a trip to the bass on Sula as well as climbing the Law.

Spent some good times there when a child. Sad the pool is gone and the old cafe / arcade replaced by the seabird centre which is an overpriced tat shop with an overpriced cafe. They are charging £15 to go round the Bass Rock now. 4 bob in 1963 (or 48p) is £10.00 in 2018 per inflation calculator. Hmmm

Adolf Hitler in a Trilby hat @ 5.58 ha ha. Alan filmed all this himself back in the day, on a 16mm Kodak with acetate film, with his shorts on, short back and sides, National Health glasses, and School Cap on.........ha ha.
Seriously though, what a gem, I'm guessing mid 60s? maybe early 60s? For all the advances in technology, and filming technique, you just cannot buy, or recreate that nostalgia. That was fantastic, I would love to see an old film of my town like that, that is priceless.
