Hi Dustin, great presentation as always. Absolutely love your content. As a fp owner and soon also fp L, I do appreciate your professional and fair opinion. Most mainstream reviewers focus too much on what they are used to - and what this camera deliberately does without. I can’t wait to try it out for myself. I will use it on a super light and compact Zhiyun Crane M2 gimbal (500 g) with the 24 f3.5 and a Samsung T5 SSD - with no cage at all. That setup will have around 1.200 g only. Go figure... A full frame camera on a gimbal, able to shoot 61 MP stills and 4K 12 Bit cDNG RAW videos - with the unique possibility to change the focal length while filming from 24 mm to 35, to 50 and to 60 mm and still shoot a native 4K. How is that not absolutely incredible. It probably won’t ever get to Sony levels of autofocus performance, and that’s fine. With the 24 mm attached, I can probably just set it to a fixed focus and keep my distance throughout the shot. And pulling focus manually really is the only way anyway if you really wanna do creative and cinematic shots. But that’s another story.
Hi there, Rokki. Your case use seems like the perfect application for the camera, which does have strengths. They are just packaged in an unconventional way.
The sigma fpl is also a good camera but I am curious to know what is the main reason you chose it over other cameras which have the same price or lower? The sony a7iv has better autofocus and image stabilization. Even if the a7iv doesnt have raw recording, its 10bit footage still has better dynamic range and color accuracy than the sigma fpl's 12bit raw. Probably you prioritize the megapixel count more, and that is understandable. The only challenge with a very high megapixel camera with slightly weak processor is the rolling shutter, the sigmal fpl has a very bad rolling shutter. At the end of the day, having another camera company is good for the industry and not only comprised with just nikons, canons and sonys. If you have bought the optional EVF, it would now be in close price range to sony a7sii and canon r5.
Very thorough and honest review. Kudos for concluding that it might be useful to some even if not appealing to you, I think that many ask for all cameras to be made the same just because they like mainstream cameras. Thanks Dustin!
Thank you Dustin for your review! "Good" to see you had similar challenges with the AF system as I did... Last week we had a Sigma representative in the local camera store, so I went there with my a6700 to test some lenses. Unfortunately for me, he had L-mount lenses with him only. I was allowed to test lenses on an FP-L, configured to 1.5 crop, to emulate my a6700. It was such a disappointing experience. I took like 100 shots on some of Sigma's finest new lenses (500mm F5.6, 70-200mm F.2, 18-45mm F1.8), and maybe 10 were in focus, even when I thought more should have been. Lenses were great, and cam handling was generally OK, and I knew it doesn't have the best AF performance, but I was hoping for a usable a6000 level of performance. It wasn't even close to that. Both the super friendly Sigma representative and my family were willing to let me test more lenses (I had the 85mm F1.4 on my list, as well as the 28-105mm, 60-600mm and 150-600mm zooms), but I was so fed up that I left, totally frustrated... First world problem, I know. I hope Sigma manages to improve (massively) on upcoming generations, as I highly appreciate the company.
Thank you Dustin for your comprehensive and one of the best frank review on Sigma fp L. As a current Sigma fp owner, I cannot agree more on your opinion on the lack of IBIS and only 49 focus points on this camera. I personally found that it is difficult to get good image quality hand held with lens longer than 45mm due to lack of IBIS, especially in low light condition. Since I also use this camera with Leica M lens, there are some aspects I would like to share when M lenses are mounted and get comments from other users if they experienced the same. First, I found color under Auto WB is unacceptable because it was way too red in artificial lighting, e.g. tungsten light. This is not the case when mounted on Lumix S1. So custom WB is the only solution. Second, auto exposure is alway under. I normally have to add +0.3 to +1ev. And third, Auto ISO tents to stay low like ISO100 even in low light condition. I would appreciate hearing from other viewers and how to handle it.
@@DustinAbbottTWI problem solved itself when I realized the various speeds on the sd card I put in the camera. Crisis/panic averted. Thanks for the quick response.
I have the FP and it’s a superb little camera. Fabulous images in stills and great for video. The AF is just fine. They were overpriced new and are getting very cheap used. I don’t know if I would pay extra for the FPL
Dustin, Thank you for this in-depth review. I am about to purchase a camera for strictly street photography. What are your thoughts about the FP-L compared to the Leica Q2? I like the ability to swap out lenses with the Sigma but am also drawn to the Leica Q2. My only other consideration is the Fuji GFX 50r. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks! Ron
Hi Ronald, I'm not familiar with the Leica Q2, unfortunately. It's hard for me to recommend the FP-L as it is stands right now because the autofocus is so inconsistent.
Hi Dustin! When I use the mc-11 adapter for my canon lenses to sony cameras I can keep the same great image quality, so I would ask you if also the mc-21 adapter offers the same identical image quality with canon lenses on L-mount cameras???? Thank you!!
@@DustinAbbottTWI So, at the end, for landscapes and astrophotography what do you suggest me : a7r4/3 or Fp L ( considering that the lenses are the same, for example sigma 14-24 and 24-70) ??? Thank you very much!!
My result of Sigma fp + MC21 + Canon 135mm f2; auto focus is slow and a bit off focus (on tripod, so no camera shake). With Lumix S1, it pin point focus even hand held (benefit of IBIS). Don’t know about fp L.
You down-sampled then tried to compare resolution? I don't know if that's really a proper test. If the two cameras have dramatically different sensor resolutions, then down-sampling one of them just invalidates the comparison, in my opinion. Then one is a .tif and the other a .dng? Wow, you seem to be adding quite a few variables to the equation. Good and interesting video though.
John, I'm not sure that you fully understand what downsampling does. It is the accepted industry standard for matching resolution and allowing one to view both images at an equal 100% value. A .DNG file is just a RAW file, and a .TIF is created as a part of the downsampling process. I could save it as a DNG file as well, but that would only be adding another processing step. I know you are questioning the process, but what I have done here is the accepted means of comparing two sensors with unequal resolution. A company like DXO does the same.
nice comprehensive review ...going forward the next sigma camera should include IBIS, better auto focus, a bigger battery and a stacked sensor for faster readout and also controlling rolling shutter.......nice work....👍
Did you mention if the camera has a mechanical shutter or not? The FP had no mechanical shutter, electronic shutter only... Seems an important thing to point out..
I´ve watch a review in which they put this camera as having the best colors and tones ever, pretty much. This statement has any validity? And allow me the apparent silly question, does this camera have better colors that your recent reviewed GFX 100?
I have both Sigma fp and GFX100S, GFX has much better “true” color and tone out of the camera, at least to my taste. Sigma fp seems to have off AWB when mounted with my Leica M lenses.
Hi Dustin. Interesting AF results. Have you reached out to Sigma with your findings to confirm that there wasn't something wrong with your review unit? I don't understand why a company would release a camera like this before they have finished working out all the bugs in the AF.
Love the modular concept but could've been implemented better. Like the viewfinder should have been a dedicated pin style connector like a hotshoe on top not to side similar to the Canon m6. The grip probably should have been one of the modules included. But a good step towards modular style cameras.
Seems pretty nifty, but I think that modularity will prove to be more of a repellant rather than a strength. I'd be too worried about breaking what looks to be a LEGO camera. On a side note: good to see Loki growing up fast!

Very enticing concept they are following with their FP bodies but it seems like they still have a decent amount of homework to do for future releases in order to make that a compelling option. Basic functionality such as somewhat reliable autofocus just does not seem to be there (I have also seen other videos about this camera which made me come to the same conclusion). Even the old Sony A7 ii has less lag and more confidence for basic single point autofocus, something like an A7 iii just makes it look like a pretty bad choice. You would have to heavily work around to use it for photography with severe limitations and run-and-gun video shooting is also quite limited with not having any IBIS at all. Small and lightweight run-and-gun shooting is what this camera seems to be made for though. I am sure that one or two releases down the line this has some very nice potential if they fix all their mature issues. Just look at how much Sony improved from generation to generation by listening to customer feedback. Their first releases had some cool features but were lacking in several areas as well.
There is NO penalty on weather sealing. It's made this way that water cannot penetrate other compartments through the heatsink slots. And the viewfinder is a 3.6 Mdot item. And Dustin...when was the last time you saw a flipable viewfinder?
