Lagoa da Pampulha is a lake located in the Pampulha region in the municipality of Belo Horizonte in the State of Minas Gerais. It is part of a complex of architectural monuments designed by Oscar Niemeyer, which were built during the administration of Juscelino Kubitschek at the head of Belo Horizonte city hall.
[History]
In 1936, the mayor of Belo Horizonte, Otacílio Negrão de Lima, began the damming of the Pampulha stream, with the aim of building a lake, whose purpose would be to dampen floods and contribute to supplying the capital. The work was completed in 1943 under his successor, Juscelino Kubitschek. In his plans to modernize the city, JK took advantage of the lagoon to build a world-famous architectural complex, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer with structural projects by engineer Joaquim Cardozo. Later, the Pampulha beachfront was surrounded by an immense leisure structure, such as the Mineirão stadium, the Mineirinho gymnasium and the Belo Horizonte Zoo.
