A simple please and thank you go a long way toward making a working day more pleasant-you feel as though you’ve been both helpful and appreciated. This series is brilliantly done. I love the poshies who are offended they've let the yobs sit in first class. I wonder what brought the American wedding planner to the UK. The scene where she reminds someone English to use 24h time is quite amusing since we don't use that in the US.

      are trains bad in the US as bad as they are here in the UK

    • @Salmagundiii
      @Salmagundiii 10 років тому +14

      Daniel Pinnock
      Are our trains"bad"? Depends how you define bad. Some North American railway advocates would be happy to have a system as extensive as the UK's. It's hard to compare though, because we have almost 10X lower population density than the UK. Hardly any European countries are as sparsely populated: so railways don't make as much sense - or at least they didn't - in much of the US because our populations centers are so far apart..
      For example, it impressed me when I visited the south coast that trains were running to & from Brighton, to the west & east, all day very frequently. Nowhere in the US are quasi-resort areas (basically) linked by such frequent trains. And in fact very few beach towns have any kind of rail connection. It is changing slowly. Massachusetts has restored a train to Cape Cod for vacationers.

    • @ErnestGagnon
      @ErnestGagnon 10 років тому +6

      Daniel Pinnock there is not a ton of trains in the USA. Mostly on the East coast.. Amtrak (the us train system) is not bad but not great either.. But the City Trains in Boston (the T), New York (the Metro), And Washington DC are not bad..

    • @2eleven48
      @2eleven48 6 років тому +18

      Salmagundii...they are not 'poshies'. They are people who have paid a very substantial amount to guarantee the entitlements of being in first class. That is their right and legal position, and British Rail allowing 'yobs', as you call them, to invade that space was entirely wrong. Robert.

    A friend of mine failed his Glasgow to Edinbugh train at Falkirk High because the rugby hooligans were destroying it. The police turned up and didn't know what to do. There wasn't enough of them apparently. They said to him, 'If you don't get this train out of here, we will arrest you.' He said 'Go on then.' They had to think about that for a minute, then they set about clearing the train.

    Liverpool Lime Street always was a bit of a hovel and in the AC Electric days (Class 86/2 and 87/0 et al) it was a nightmare to approach with the brake burning downhill incline 'down' from Edge Hill CSD especially with a well loaded WB rake behind! I used to be based on the West Coast Main Line and have many happy memories of being a driver from 1992 to 1997 just before the privatisation in fact. The line has been upgraded and in a number of cases remodelled quite extensively since I was 'on the footplate' and the days of two drivers in the cab on 110 MPH diagrams are over. However 'footex' trains have not changed based on this programme: Always were bloody chaotic as were the extra booked stops made at Wembley Central! :o)

    even with all the delays involved I find rail service in the UK and europe far superior that rail service in the states. I did ride the California Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville and back to Chicago
    Problem I find that at one time there were lots of tracks and routes were available but in today's world only some of the larger cities have a train depot ,,so it's getting off the at a nearby city and then many times a bus ride to the destination you want.
    The ride thru the mountains was spectacular I must say,, Bit slow but very scenic .

      To be utterly pedantic it is possible for the time to be minutely different in different parts of the train if the train is travelling East-West or West-East. Although Britain works on the same time zone, the actual time by when the sun rises/ sets is different in different parts of the country, so if the train is travelling West-East and it's a particularly long train there is a possibility of it being 1 o'clock in one part of the train and 1 o'clock and a few seconds in another part.

      FPVtrainee Sometimes the delay to the train and its passengers takes precedence. When I was a passenger conductor it was a judgment call. If it was something like a drunk being especially out of line, and abusive to others, I’d call ahead for police. Sometimes a cop would happen to be at a station, then it was convenient to deal with something like a ticket scam.

    Years ago, I worked for GO Transit, a commuter railway and bus service in Toronto. One afternoon, I was talking to a co-worker who was a ticket agent at Burlington Station. He was on the other side of the glass and he had the microphone and speaker in the window at full blast.
    I asked him how things were going. He said (again, full volume here), “The trains are all fucked up!”
    A passenger across the waiting room, wearing a suit, gave me a shocked look.
    I shrugged my shoulders and hollered over to him, “Well, it’s true!”
