Jay McShann was born in Oklahoma in 1916 and began his career as a pianist in the 1930s. He formed his first band in the early 1940s, and it was during this time that he met Charlie Parker, who was then an up-and-coming saxophonist. Parker would go on to play with McShann's band for several years, and the two became close friends.
The Jay McShann Sextet was one of McShann's most successful groups, and it featured a rotating cast of musicians over the years. In addition to Parker, some of the other notable players who passed through the band included saxophonists Harold Land and Sonny Stitt, and drummers Gus Johnson and Paul Humphrey.
Throughout his career, McShann was known for his bluesy, swing-inspired playing style, and he continued to perform and record well into his later years. He passed away in 2006 at the age of 90.

Terrific show, some of the best jazz on the Chicago Jazz Festival was this McShann set - excellent Budd Johnson and Claude Williams woth the orginial rhythm section of the 1940's band. Remarkable
