How sad the churches aren't continuing to be needed and used as places of worship. What beautiful places they are. Thank you for sharing this lovely singing. God Bless You
It is indeed sad. At time of writing the Church of Scotland is planning to close half of all the Churches in Scotland. I don’t think there has ever been such a falling away in well over a thousand years.
Sadly true!! The Church of Scotland has embraced progressive liberal theology and is now in a state of terminal collapse! They have enthusiastically welcomed the "Abomination that maketh desolate" into the Pulpit; abandoning God's Word in favour of "a god after their own hearts"! This reflects the dead lost spiritual condition of many of the members and clergy, and so the Church of Scotland is become a spiritually dead carcase!! The church of England is in much the same condition! Never fear that this is a victory for Satan, it is confirmation of scripture and is happening across our world!! Many are openly declaring their rebellion and where they stand!! God is not cheated!! Luke 3:16-18 New King James Version 16 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.” 18 And with many other exhortations he preached to the people.

@@Londonfogey Hi. It saddens me to hear you are having the same problem. Yes, the Churches should have been reaching out to people but instead, were deafeningly silent. Many people here fell away from the Church during Covid and never returned. My own local church is one of the churches which has had to merge. Every time this happens, more members are lost and there is yet another empty church up for sale. I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to falling numbers. God Bless.
Thank you for these beautiful hymns. I'm sad about the Kirks being sold and used for anything but churches. We need revival! I just finished the book, "Scottish Heroes." The Covenanters were so faithful. Would God that we do the same.

I have begun to set aside some time every day to listen to these psalms sung on your channel, often reading along at the same time. They bring me such joy, peace and hope. Bless you.
Fun facts... 1. One of the few localised revivals in the UK in the 20th century was in the Hebrides, the Isles of Lewis and Harris, the heart of Psalm singing country in Scotland in 1949-52. 2. In the Hebrides, they still speak Gaelic, the only remaining indigenous language of Scotland, as well as English. 3. The mother of US President, Donald Trump, came from the Isle of Lewis. I am English but my wife's family is Scottish. Scottish people have brought blessing to me over the years and I end up praying a lot for Scotland. May the Lord visit these dear people in a mighty way again.
The Pictish Language has been translated by my husband. It is a pidgin (or creole) which employs the lexicon of the Old Irish language as the lexifier with none of the morphology attached to the Old Irish language itself. The translations demonstrate the love of the psalms and the Bible between the 6th. and 11th. centuries A.D. The Bressay inscription is translated from scriptio continua, dedicated by "Son of Steadfast" ; Pictish transliteration: CCROSCC:NAHHTFFDDADDS: DATTRANNBENNISES:MAQQDDRROANN Transliteration (spoken): cros cә: nacht fәdad әs: da tәr an ben Ises: mac droan Old Irish words: cros co: nacht fothad ais: da tír an ben Ísu: mac dron English: cross with: purity erected in this place: Thy land glorious on high Jesus: Son of Steadfast The prefix Aber is not Welsh for 'confluence' but Old Irish 1 ab + 1 ér = Lord + great (syntax noun + adjective) with an ecclesiastical epithet following. So; Aberbothrie = ab + er + both + rie = lord + great + creation + king = Great Lord King of Creation Abersky = ab + er + scai = lord + great + flock = (Psalm 100 "we are your sheep"). See also the place name Meigle = Old Irish "to bleat" the sound of a sheep". Abercrombie = ab + erc + rom +bie = Lord + heaven + pre-eminent + shall be (3rd. person future sing. of the verb atta = to be). From Colossians 1:18. Aberlemno (Aberlemnach in the 14th. century). Ab + erlam + nach = Lord + Patron Saints + (Genitve 'people'. cf. Sassennach = Saxon People). The river Lemno is 5 miles away meaning, in Old Irish 'milk' (cf. Abermilk = ab + er + milc in Dumfries). A reference to Exodus 3:8 The Promised Land, the Kingdom of Heaven. The Word of the Lord has long been worshipped in Scotland. My this help restore the ancient church with its roots well before John Knox.
There are denominations who specifically sing Psalms only during worship. These include: Free Church of Scotland Continuing (FCC) Reformed Presbyterian Church North America (RPCNA) Unfortunately, that’s all there is; although, just last year the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) new “hymnal” is now called a “Psalter Hymnal” because all 150 Psalms were added. Our particular church sings at least two Psalms every Lords Day during worship.
Thankfully, there is also the Presbyterian Reformed Church (PRC). Also, the FRC (Free Reformed Churches) are either exclusive psalmist or very close, and they are mostly in Canada.
The 1650 version is almost all common meter so you can get by with only a few tunes for that. Sing Psalms has a wide range of meters, as the 1635(?) and earlier versions did. But the tunes are mostly simple, though I don't attempt 4 part harmony. Though it's easy to get caught in the Wiltshire-Orlington trap. The second line of both is almost the same and both are commonly paired with the 23rd Psalm. Even in church the precentor once started a stanza with Wiltshire before accidentally switching mid verse! 🤣
This isn't what I expected, but I am glad I found it. I love a cappella singing, especially hymns and psalms. It is interesting to see just how similar these old churches are to the old churches in New England, the same plain, unadorned boxes with wooden pews, same great acoustics.

What's happening to the christian heritage established and left for our generation and upcoming generations. Recently, I read about z church in USA to be closed due to dwindling attendance. Are we going back to age of ignorance or the dark ages? God Almighty, kindly raise the likes of the reformers in this present and future generations. Amen
Not back to "the Dark Ages" by which name the Early Medieval Period between 450 - 1,000 A.D in the UK is commonly known. This is the post-Roman Age when Christianity was brought to the Celtic people of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and what become known as Saxon England. It is the age of Celtic saints in Ireland, Cornwall through Wales to Morayshire; the age of conversion from a pagan past; the age of Bede; the age of the Book of Kells and Book of Deer. If we were to "go back" to this "Dark Age" that would imply a resurrection in Faith. This, sadly, is a new age of Lucifer, an age of cognitive, social and philosophic enlightenment, of belief in technology rather than the Word of God. People think politics, technology and 'spirituality' without selfless supplication to the Will of God will create a New Jerusalem rather than through belief in the Word of God. An age in which people are blinded by the light of their own proud insight and their own egocentric, arrogant, thinking. An age contemptuous of the humility of selfless Faith. Rejoice in the Lord, whatever.
We're not going back, We're progressing into the end times, but keep in mind that a thousand years is as a day, and a day is as a thousand years so we could be going into end times for a long time.
It’s crazy how familiar these songs are! I listen to a lot of hymns, and I recognize so many of these tunes, even if the words are different for some. Always love Scripture set to good music; what more meaningful lyrics could we sing?! So glad to have found this! Thanks for sharing, and I thank the Lord for the timeless sufficiency of His word :)
Deuteronomy has a great pattern for devotion in Deut 17v18-20. Out in the middle of Texas, all that I've found is drum beating bible churches and baptist churches waiting to be raptured. Trying to speak truth into that thinking. Discouraging but for seeing the Lord really working among them in spite of them. Copying through the Word is glorious. Still miss congregational psalm singing as I did in Southfield Presbyterian in Michigan. Your praises in psalms singing strengthen me.
While many were built for the glory of man and duplicated due the 'Disrupton' in the XIXC, it is also true that many folks found in them solace and community, but never heard the Gospel of God's love and pardoning grace. I was baptised in one, went to Sunday school, Boys Brigade and 'joined the church' there, that of 1,100 members at the time, yettoday that magnificente building lies rotting and empty for the last 20 years! Why? Well, I can honestly say that no-one there ever mentioned that I needed to be saved!
I was the same. For 14 years as a youngster, I went to church, Sunday School, choir & youth club. But nobody ever told me that, in order to be saved, I had to put my trust in the Lord as a specific, intentional act on my part. I think it was because they assumed that whatever was necessary for me to know would somehow trickle into my consciousness. Thankfully I was eventually challenged to confess my sins to the Lord and trust the Lord Jesus as my Saviour - by someone from another church! (One benefit however from my days as an unregenerate churchgoer was that, formally, I had a lot of Bible knowledge which gained proper context once I knew the Lord for myself.) It was to a very religious, outwardly righteous minister that the Lord Jesus said, “You must be born again to see the kingdom of heaven”. (John Chapter 3 verse 7)

Like Nicodemus, "Teacher of Israel", so many clergy and church attenders have no concept of how one becomes part of the Kingdom of God!! Today much of the "church" is just like the "learned Nicodemus"; spiritually blind and steeped in "man's wisdom", a futile substitute for the "Gift of the Holy Spirit"; this dead "church" is a false profane witness to a dying world!! The Day of Pentecost is just mentioned as a day on the "church calendar" instead of being preached about as probably the first great event of the "Great Commission"; when the Disciples were "endued with power from on high" and thousands of people were "Born Again"!! Indeed the events of the Day of Pentecost are a model for how people are "Born Again"!! No surprise then that we read the following: Jesus' challenges Nicodemus, "teacher of Israel": John 3:4-9 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?” .................. At Pentecost, Peter preaches "Repentance and Remission of Sins" and three thousand are "Born Again": Acts 2:38-42 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.”
A God honouring touch would be to add lyrics and credits - so frustrating to not be able to join in the praise of our victorious God for lack of access to the words. Or at least add the first line for us to look up for ourselves. God bless x
What a curse on Scotland that all these historic buildings are no longer filled with worshippers. Pray for revival in the church and the world. When the church wants to be like the world and changes with it that is like the Jews adopting the pagan groves and high places of their day.

Google "scottish metrical psalter 1650" - most are from this. Some are from a new version called "Sing Psalms" and a couple are in an old version of the Scots dialect.
55:55 Is not Psalm 29:1-11 (Psalms of David in Metre, Church of Scotland, OUP). "Give ye unto the Lord, ye sons that of the mighty be, All strength and glory to the Lord with cheerfulness give ye..." It is not "Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise", composed by the Free Church of Scotland minister Walter Chalmers Smith, that is normally associated with the tune St. Denio. I cannot hear the first line in the video clearly but it appears to be a hymn. Which one I cannot determine. It's still beautiful. Does anyone recognise it?
PLEASE pin link or paste the comment of SamuelRutherfotdDiLeila listing all the contents of this view so viewers may find it with ease. THANK YOU FOR THIS WONDERFUL COMPILATION!!!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't imagine how much work went into this video. Where are/were these kirks?
In the Census of, 2022 carried out by the Church of Scotland, they found that from the very North of Scotland ie Shetland Islands to the most southern part viz. Dumfries & Galloway there was only 60,000 attending church. This of course does not include the various other Presbyterian churches, Baptists and other independent denominations. The population of Scotland is approaching 6 million. Gone are the days when going to church on the Lord's Day was met with traffic jams and thousands of people walking to their place of worship. This is nothing short of God's judgment on a nation that has turned its back on Him. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says " If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land." Only then will we see a change in our society?
The man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, whose delight is in the Law of the Lord and on his Law he meditates day and night is like the tree planted by streams of water whose leaf does not wither, all that he does, prospers. As with the man is the nation made up of such men. Not that prosperity here means monetary wealth, but if we meditate on the Law of the Lord and are guided by his Word and his Spirit, everything we do will be in keeping with his Word and his Spirit and therefore successful.

The sad state of a culture and church which traded what was its very life and substance for a mess of pottage. Secularism eats out the vitals of a society and always leads to its downfall.
Its a shame Sing Psalms is used in places. It is not faithful to the original and is very modern. Using that is a departure from the received text. Very sad to see churches tampering with the Word of God. And the Free church has gone even further and now sing words of human composition.
Sing psalms follows the original texts pretty carefully. Would you have objected to the 1650 psalter if you lived in 1660? A translation in intelligible English was very overdue. What proportion of the population do you think understand 17th century English? I like the Sing Psalms version as it's designed for a capella singing, in regular meters and includes all the psalms not just a dozen popular ones drowned in musical accompaniment.
Beautiful! We need more psalm singing in churches across the world, especially here in America.
Agreed! I'm wanting to bring it up to the church I attend to try and get it started there.

Hit reply to soon. Was going to say that even “traditional “ pales, compared to this. Will definitely be trying to work these in as well
Amen, it's sadly a rare thing nowadays.
Too many American churches would find singing the psalms either "too Catholic" or not "relevant."

Psalms not hymns , it’s down to lack of money , lack of members and sadly lack of interest
@@alexrobinson2281 that is indeed sad! Thank you for the beautiful Psalms!

Truly balm to the soul💕
Thank you amenxx
The Pictish Language has been translated by my husband. It is a pidgin (or creole) which employs the lexicon of the Old Irish language as the lexifier with none of the morphology attached to the Old Irish language itself. The translations demonstrate the love of the psalms and the Bible between the 6th. and 11th. centuries A.D. The Bressay inscription is translated from scriptio continua, dedicated by "Son of Steadfast" ;
Pictish transliteration: CCROSCC:NAHHTFFDDADDS: DATTRANNBENNISES:MAQQDDRROANN
Transliteration (spoken): cros cә: nacht fәdad әs: da tәr an ben Ises: mac droan
Old Irish words: cros co: nacht fothad ais: da tír an ben Ísu: mac dron
English: cross with: purity erected in this place: Thy land glorious on high Jesus: Son of Steadfast
The prefix Aber is not Welsh for 'confluence' but Old Irish 1 ab + 1 ér = Lord + great (syntax noun + adjective) with an ecclesiastical epithet following. So;
Aberbothrie = ab + er + both + rie = lord + great + creation + king = Great Lord King of Creation
Abersky = ab + er + scai = lord + great + flock = (Psalm 100 "we are your sheep").
These include:
Free Church of Scotland Continuing (FCC)
Reformed Presbyterian Church North America (RPCNA)
Unfortunately, that’s all there is; although, just last year the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) new “hymnal” is now called a “Psalter Hymnal” because all 150 Psalms were added. Our particular church sings at least two Psalms every Lords Day during worship.
Thankfully, there is also the Presbyterian Reformed Church (PRC). Also, the FRC (Free Reformed Churches) are either exclusive psalmist or very close, and they are mostly in Canada.
@@alexmauger4533 Ty for sharing that (encouraging) information!
We always still sing the Scottish after each meal and in sequence we love them
Did you learn all of these melodies, if so what was your method? I feel like it could take years!
Does anyone know where I can get the sheet music so I can play along?
That must be joyous to sing before meals with family and friends. You are blessed!

This isn't what I expected, but I am glad I found it. I love a cappella singing, especially hymns and psalms. It is interesting to see just how similar these old churches are to the old churches in New England, the same plain, unadorned boxes with wooden pews, same great acoustics.

How lovely and refreshing!

I thank the Lord for you all.
I never memorised the lyrics. But I hear that sound and its just coming back to me now lol.

18 And with many other exhortations he preached to the people.
No surprise then that we read the following:
Jesus' challenges Nicodemus, "teacher of Israel":
John 3:4-9
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”
..................
At Pentecost, Peter preaches "Repentance and Remission of Sins" and three thousand are "Born Again":
Acts 2:38-42
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.”
Beautiful!!!!!🎚️♥️
A God honouring touch would be to add lyrics and credits - so frustrating to not be able to join in the praise of our victorious God for lack of access to the words. Or at least add the first line for us to look up for ourselves. God bless x

What a curse on Scotland that all these historic buildings are no longer filled with worshippers. Pray for revival in the church and the world. When the church wants to be like the world and changes with it that is like the Jews adopting the pagan groves and high places of their day.

Jeremiah 2:17
Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?
[31]O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?
[32]Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
[33]Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.
[34]Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.
[35]Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.
[36]Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.
[37]Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

Are Scottish churches always this empty nowadays?
What psalter is this taken from?
I have the 1650 psalter and see several from there.

Have a nice cup of tea. You'll feel better
You may be encouraged to know that Sing Psalms was translated directly from Hebrew. Psalm 23 also follows the original 3 line setting of 11 beats.
@@kennethmacdonald6905 why deviate from 1650 which is unsurpassed by its accuracy and understanding?
@@kennethmacdonald6905The KJV added words (placed in italics) to the text, which changed the original meaning as well. Not too kosher.
Scotland is a beautiful land, but I get a vitamin D deficiency just looking at it.
