With Ft. Belvoir Marine base being close by I heard this growing up al the time over the neighborhood.... Iconic! That sound will never be mistaken! The Huey had that distinct sound like no other and you could hear it coming from a mile away!
Huey 369 was in my unit the 498th Dustoff in 1971. Have flown in it a couple of times since coming home, one time with one of our Pilots that I flew with in Vietnam.
I was born in 1958 , so by the time I turned 17 and joined the Army in 1975, I missed Vietnam by 2 years , But being the Airborne Infantry 1/509 in Italy there were plenty of Nam Vet pilots still serving , and when we conducted Air Assault training operations , Those guys seem to re live their days in country and fly like hell & we enjoyed the heck out of it, Tree top flight , sitting in the door with the skids kicking up dust & leaves was like no amusement ride you could ever find, Salute to those old Choppers & Crews !!!

Yeah.. to the guys in the field under fire in Vietnam, it meant rescue. Salvation. Things were starting to look up because those pilots were willing to risk just about everything to rescue the guys on the ground.
I love this UH- Huey. It is so cute and good looking. When I was a boy, I was very excited when I saw it flew across my house while I was playing with my friends in front yard. It flew so low that I could see the soldiers clearly. I waved to them and jumped up and down. Vietnam in the year of 1973
Man I just love that sounds it’s so cool and iconic I got to sit in one these guys once when I was younger it was so cool that sound will be remembered forever hopefully
049 was in my gunship platoon (Alley Cats ) of the 282nd Aslt Hel Co (Black Cats) in 69-70. Flew out of Marble Mountain air base in DaNang. 049 was armed as an experimental missile ship at that time. Carried six wire guided missiles that packed quite a wallop. I was a doorgunner on one of the other seven gunships of the Alley Cats, which were armed as you see 049 is in this video.
I stayed in a hootch not too far from Eagle Dustoff in Phu Bai. Wish I had some photos of those Huey's with those huge stateside white blankets and red crosses on them. They flew very often bringing Soldiers back to the 101st Airborne/Airmobile camp or the 85th Evacuation hospital.
First flight was in a UH-1B from Qui Nhon RVN in1966,last flight was a UH-1H from a support base in Saudi Arabia in1990. In between many flights in Huey’s,CH-47s,OH-6s,and UH-60s! Even scored a front seat flight in a AH-1 in VN. pretty good for a medic!
I got to fly in these "Birds" numerous times during my time in the "Corps" ("Vietnam Era"). I kind of drift off to another time listening to this. :-) Thanks so much for this! It's my therapy! SEMPER Fi! To all who flew these and their crews, WELCOME HOME!

Crazy to think that these slicks and hogs probably were there in Nam, saving and taking countless lives in the name of freedom and democracy. Been reading and listening to podcasts about the heroics these crews pulled off, often multiple times a day and night. Heroic folks, one and all!

I really love American soldiers and the songs ROCKING ROLL, of the timeless war ... C.C.R ... GOD ALWAYS PROTECT America.

Great Video of a great aircraft. Good old warhorse. I abseiled out of one of these in my army reserve days. Love the end part of the clip, Ohio fields look so lush. Nice country.

thanks for posting… I'm a helicopter enthusiast the best I can do is fly radio controlled super Riggs and I tell you these Huey's are absolutely awe-inspiring. You just can't take your eyes off them. They are just such a freaking machine it's unbelievable.thanks again very fun to see these
the sound of uh1h .....it is staying with you the rest of your life ..... my room was at middle of runways ..... and those uh1h woke me up at 5 am every morning ( during the Vietnam war)
At 5:44 that was the baddest ass representation on chopper I've ever seen in the military. Took the civilians, touched base with the Capt., (those skids did touch) with pilot respect & flew the wounded.
Spend many hours in a huey. The best helicopter I ever flew. It's a shame that even national guard quit flying them. When they flew over my house I would hear the blades and go out side to watch them fly over. And I would be young again.
yeah, just stay alive for a couple of two minutes more and you'll be back home safe, run as fast as you can while living that hell of a jungle behind before huey even touches down, save your ammo, door gunner have your back.
That's the most recognizable sound of any vehicle, land, sea, or air. So iconic and unmistakable. I live just a couple hundred miles from Fort Bragg and every few months and especially in summer you hear them flying over our area no doubt doing training exercises with that unmistakable thump thump thump thump thump. So amazing to see and hear up close.
The Navy squadron I was attached to had these helos before the transition to H-60’s. Helicopter Attack Light Squadron Five (HAL-5) with the Hueys. We then became Helicopter Combat Support Special Squadron Five (HCS-5) with HH-60H Seahawks. All based ashore at Naval Air Weapons Station Pt. Mugu.

Flying in a Huey is so addictive.

Probably the easiest helicopter to identify based on sound alone. The Huey has one of the most iconic blade chops out of all helicopters
Some two blade Bell helicopters sound very similar. I. e. The AH-1 Cobra and the Bell 222 and 230.
Yep just like being able to identify the Harley Davidson because of the sound of it's motor.
yeah the bell 214st has the same sounds of the UH-1 but its louder
I wonder how loud it is in person
