Les Darlow, you are the best in the world. That high drama in the sky, which is the contrast, is like Beethoven's Da Da Da Dum. And a touch of Rembrandt. Nobody else even tries it. And you are extremely generous in sharing your genius. I have been around, I am in my 70s, been on a huge number of painting instruction holidays. Nothing remotely to compare with yourself, Les. Thanks.
Canson Paper, and UNISON Pastels, work fast and Free, clouds constantly moving. I will be doing some live demos on Google Hangout. Keep an eye out for them on my website lesdarlow and you will be able to log in and watch them as i do them in real time,
Out of all the tutorial videos I've watched this short one of yours has helped me the most somehow. much more my taste and how you put on and play with the color actually stays in my mind better than others. thank you! my creative juices are now flowing :)
@sanayavg Thanks you so much for your kind comments. I work quickly to try and capture movement in my skies. Clouds are constantly moving and are made of gas so they need to look light. some people spend too long and make them look like big lumps of Dough. Keep painting. Regards Les
I'v seen so many paintings on urs is my favorite I love the sky the way you did the clouds is just breathtaking you sir have mastered the art of making art better than reality
you are my favourite artist sir. you create absolute wonders with few strokes of colour...i always believed a true artist never wastes his strokes and you are so blessed to be one of those. im just starting out with dry pastels and i keep learning. im from india and oils is the medium of most artists here. its even difficult to get the materials!! you are such an inspiration!! thank you for posting.
@thekugmoman canson paper and UNISON or windsor and newton pastels Seinellier are good too. More vids soon. regards Les Darlow... Many thanks for comments
Spellbinding, mesmerising, captivating - all of these and more. Absolutely stunning piece of work. And the music worked so well with it. I wonder if perhaps you are an oil pastel sorcerer 😀💙☁⛅🔯🔱
hi @les darlow... 💕😍 love ur drawing it gorgeous and i was so inspired that i wanted to make it too so i just wanted to ask that what colors and shades did u use n if there is a video that is slow so that i could learn is there a slow tutorial available of this painting?
@sarl1952 I dont at the moment but I am looking into doing some simple tutorials for the things i work best with such as Skies and water reflections .. will post some more soon. Regards Les
Les, your work is fantastic. I am working on a pic of a landscape I took a while back and having a little problem with catching the light in the tops of the clouds. I know your video is not normal speed so if you can elaborate what works best to capture that?
Thank you, Mr. Darlow, for posting your work. Just wonderful! - Quick questions for you: 1) I have not tried Canson paper - usually use Wallis, how does it compare? 2) I notice you don't underpaint; can you share an opinion on that technique?
Les, I love your work in pastels. The videos of your work, that I have seen, have all been very beautiful. I've done a painting in soft pastels and was told the courser the paper, the better: providing better adhesive of pastel to paper. This logic seems true, with my limited experience in this particular medium, but blending with my hands and fingers felt like I put them in a meat grinder. I tried using a small piece of sponge, but it just didn't have the same effect as using ones fingers. What's your take on this? You always seem to only blend with your fingers and hands.
It looks effortless when you do it. It inspired me to get my chalks out and begin anew..since I've not done any art for a couple years. I put the video on...pausing it at intervals to copy your steps..and I got nowhere near the same results! LOL What kind of paper are you using? I will practice and practice til I can get somewhere near the results...thanks for the inspiration...I LOVE your cloud videos!
I really wonder how u get those sharp edges painting the clouds and the river with your finger? or is it the pastel your using has sharp edge. I tried it but mine comes out round.
I would like to ask how come the white color can be so vibrant? I tried to overlap white on dark color but it did not show well. I tried to spray a layer of fixatives, it helps a bit, but still not as vibrant as yours.

Hi. Using the best quality papers and pastels. I don't actually put a lot of pastel on until I want that light colour to punch out.
Use unison pastels and canson papers
+Les Darlow Thank you for your reply!
She starts out with black paper
Les Darlow increíble increíble increíble; Se lo juró es la pintura mas hermosa que haya visto!!! eres un genio...
Hi I use Winsor and Newton , or Unison Chalk Pastels. I cannot get used to oil pastels. Might as well use oil paint. chalks easier to manipulate
