It's been theorized that Cypher is so embittered and betrayed everyone because Morpheus previously thought that he was the One, but that he failed certain key tasks and such. You can tell in certain dialogue bits that he's referring to others previously believing in him, and how he loved Trinity too but she didn't love him back, etc. etc. It's a pretty good take on why he decides to betray them to the machines so he can go back to being oblivious in the Matrix. This movie was such a mindfuck for most people in '99, because it's not a concept that the general public had been introduced to really. To this day scientists are still trying to determine if we are actually existing inside a simulation or not. This was also when a large part of the internet was brand new still, and usenet groups/messaging programs were just becoming popular. The thing you have to understand about the Matrix to fully affect it, like Neo did at the end, is that 'there is no spoon' is true. It's not a spoon. It's code. It's ALL code. Neo didn't die when Smith shot him because those weren't bullets, and that wasn't his body, and he GOT it. He was able to manipulate the code of the Matrix to suit his views and needs, which is why he was a threat to the system, as the others understood this on a surface level and could thus perform physics defying feats, but he was the one who performed SYSTEM defying feats. At the point where Neo talks to the Oracle and she tells him he's not the One, it's because at that particular point, he isn't. He's still holding on to the remnants of his past life/existence. The Oracle gave him a cookie though, like, an internet cookie, which it's thought enabled the code within him to realize his full ability as the One. The "death" was just a reboot to install new upgrades heh

It reminds me of when editing jam sessions for my band's songs, I keep a mental note of which times into the 4 hour recording session which highlights were at and not play the entire thing but edit the bits I thought were the best when doing it live at the time, maybe he and they do it that way?
I remember not being interested when the film came out too. It came out during the summer of The Phantom Menace, so I was all in on Star Wars at the time and The Matrix flew under my radar. It wasn't until I watched the movie on DVD year or so later at a friend's house that it really hit me. The Matrix became one of those movies that sold a LOT of DVD players back when they were a very new form of home media because it became a cult hit that made watching it on DVD almost a necessity. Also, a lot of people miss the fact that Agent Smith knew to go to Room 303 because it was the same room where Trinity fought the cops at the start of the movie. I guess it was either the only available hardline in the area or Tank forgot that they had used the same hardline location earlier, and Smith recognized the building and remembered it.
Was the room number (303) a reference to anything in particular? It's always made me think of the Aussie story of Breaker Morant, which has been adapted into a film, a play, etc. "We caught them and shot them under Rule 303."
@@SchrodingersTransCat I recall hearing that the number 303 represents the Holy Trinity, which makes sense since that's the room where we first meet Trinity. Apparently, it's also a number that means inner peace and finding one's path in life, which is essentially Neo's journey in the film.
Great reaction. This is always a fun one because it really messes with your head if you don't know anything about it. It's deliberately difficult to tell what is happening until you understand the full context. Which is what makes it so good.

@@ChachiSays I've seen several reactions to the matrix and many of the younger ones seem to have a way too short attention span and miss many of the subtle hints and information. Granted, it's a lot of information tightly packed, so it's easy to miss something the first run. Just as an example when Neo did the agent training program, it was mentioned that agents can essentially impersonate any person that is still connected to the matrix. The woman in the red dress turned into an agent. Though you immediately picked up that agents can impersonate people the next time it's shown. Some people are confused up to the very end and don't manage to connect the dots. It's really great to see that you actually "watched" the movie and paid attention. We can tell that you were actually invested in following the plot. Like the subtle hints that Trinity "knows something". It's kinda sad that some people "sit" through a movie and haven't actually seen it. I haven't seen that many movies in the cinema, but this is one of them I watched with my family and leaving the cinema after that movie was really special. Especially since I'm a programmer since I'm 11 years old I had so many thoughts on my way out. Just brilliant. The Matrix still hold up quite well to todays standards, but it's sad that it takes out the shine given the possibilities of this day and age.
The thing I never understood: In Germany, when Trinity shoots the Agents and says "Dodge this", she says in the translation "Nur ein Agent" ("Only an Agent") after he said "Only human" to Neo and I somehow think thats a cooler answer to his oneliner. But thats just me. :D

I think my favorite part of this movie is that on first viewing, the Oracle absolutley definitely 100% tells Neo that he's NOT the one. But in hindsight or re-watching, she tells Neo that he absolutely definitely 100% IS the one... It's all just a matter of interpretation.

In an earlier draft of the script the movie opened with Cypher's best friend being captured by agents and Morpheus orders they unplug him. Everyone is cold toward Cypher so he just gives up. So Cypher is actually getting justified revenge. It was removed because it made the hero team seem cold and even deserving of Cypher's judgment. Note that all the people they kill are just people who could potentially become agents. This is what they do and this is what Cypher did when he went on missions with them, too, and he was doing it only to help the people who killed his friend.
@@ChachiSays I love this movie and I've seen it about a hundred times. There is a channel called Matrix Explained that goes through all the mysteries and theories about the whole series. It is my opinion that The Matrix series borders the horror genre so people have to frequently make poor choices throughout the movies. There's also bunches of cut-scens from the game Enter The Matrix, that you can find on UA-cam... and I can't remember if those go between M1 and M2 or between M2 and M3. You can also see what Neo's training was like and broaden the story if you watch gameplay of The Matrix: Path of Neo

"Ohh I really like this guy" -me "Ohh just wait a bit and you will love to hate him" But I got to admit I likde his interaction up to that point as well, he was the only one on the crew that acted humen and understanding to the transformation. But there was a couple of creeper bits when he was taking to trinity and you never gave me breakfast etc. Keep up the great work, like someone else said you have good cuts. I also like your comments, and you use similar camera style as most that have done this for a long time. Can't wait to see more, and watch you finnish the triology of matrix (even if the first movie is by far the best imo, might have been that I waited for the second and third for so many years before they came out that they could never live up to the anticipation, specially since this first one was such a gamechanger and hade so many movies copying the slow motion style etc that this movie brought)
BTW just in case the thought occurs to you that the Oracle stated one of them would die, and both are still alive, there are 2 interpretations. 1. Neo technically did "die" for a few minutes towards the end. 2. The old Neo died when he realized his actual potential. Both of these together can also equal the religious notion of Death and Rebirth leading to ascension. When the Oracle says he isn't The One, she is correct, at that moment he isn't the one, he had too many hang ups and doubts.
Like you, I didn't watch this until many years after it first came out because I figured the trailers showed the only good parts in the movie. But upon first viewing, after I picked my jaw up off the floor, I said to myself, "Why did I take so long to watch this? This is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen!" (the two sequels pale in comparison but are worth watching at least once).

So if he is The One, he must be dead. Trinity has to have fallen in love with him, just then. But then she says he can't be dead because she loves him. And that means he can't be The One because he has to be dead to be The One who she falls in love with. If three people play rock paper scissors and always throw the same thing, nobody wins or loses. Same person always beats the same person but they also always lose and in the same way. And they always lose to the same person. Forever.

One thing I never understood, we find out by the end of the movies the Agents can become anyone still plugged into the Matrix, so then why didn't they take over the police after Trinity at the beginning? Why stay in the bodies they where currently in and walking up the stairs while she killed the cops? They could have morfed into one of the cops and had her much sooner.

The Oracle says "sorry kid, but you have the gift". Sounds like she's telling him he's "The One" to me... don't get why so many people aren't sure if he's the one after that... She's saying sorry because Neo doesn't want to be the One.

The first one is pretty straight forward compared to the last 2 but yeah you're right a couple of rewatches will do you good. Now the second one might take you about 10 watches to fully understand lol. Looking forward to the next one 😭

Humans would actually make really inefficient batteries. Funnily enough, the Wachowski’s actually wanted the machines to use the humans as computing power, but the studio thought it would be too complex for the audience in 1999.
The oracle told him exactly what would happen. He would believe he is the one during his second life. After he is shot by Agent Smith. There are so many Easter eggs in this movie you could re watch it 100x.
The Matrix is an experience, and I'm glad you watched it! I feel like everyone needs to watch this movie and I take immense pride in getting ppl to watch it x,D. It holds up insanely well.
Just a little explanation of what the oracle said. Everything she told him was true. "Your not the one." "You've got the gift, but it looks like your waiting for something". " Your next life maybe" "one of you is going to die" neo died and when Trinity kisses him it sent a message to his brain reminding him "there is no spoon" (ie no bullets). So his heart started and he was reborn inside the matrix as the one.

Agents are so cool and scary. Strong, fast, skilful and even if managed to kill them they just reappear close to you in a second when you made a slight mistake and someone notice you.
This movie is amazing. Looking back you’ll notice that any scene that is with the characters in the matrix has a green tint over it - hinting that it’s within in the computer simulation. The oracles kitchen top is green, her dress, the tiles on the wall. The agents suits have green tints too. In the end, NEO sees the matrix for what it is - a virtual simulation and nothing more. out together by strings of code. The code he sees is the matrix itself. Given the year this movie was made and comparing it to computer operating systems today, with viruses, bugs, different softwares for different tasks (this will make more sense if you watch the entire trilogy) this movie is nothing short of genius. The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions aren’t as good - they were filmed together and both released in 2003, but I still recommend watching them together.

I have two comments. First of all, the human battery thing was something forced on them by executive meddling. The original idea was that our brains were being used as wetware processors. So not only were we trapped in the Matrix, but we were _running_ the Matrix (in the sense that our brains were being used as CPUs to run the program). But the executives thought that was too cerebral... they thought moviegoers were too STUPID to understand the "humans as wetware" plot, so they switched to the "human batteries" plot. Where it falls apart is that it takes FAR more energy to grow a human than you will ever GET from a human. The robots would be LOSING energy. Second, the scene in which Neo vomited? That was real vomit. Apparently, for lunch that day, the commissary served bad chicken pot pie (everyone was sick).

Stop with this one. It's a good action flick. The following two are ok action flicks, and the Animatrix is alright...but too much will damage your brain. The concepts in the story are that stupid. They got literally nothing right...not about how computers operate, or human brains, or anything else.

One of the genius things that he Wachowski sisters did was to get a comic book artist to do the story boards. The visual language is just slightly different because of this. If you like this, you should also react to the 1995 Ghost in the Shell movie, which heavily influenced this.
I know some say the biological battery model makes no sense, and that originally their brains were used for parallel processing in the screenplay, but think about the analogy. When people are completely asleep or unaware what is going on, that their unknown "consent" is allowing them to power the society that enslaves them, that by analogy being passive consumerists of this fictional material reality, we're surrendering our own power our very lifeforce to run society, and that we're really being exploited by that society. This film is about disconnecting from that system or society which enslaves them, to literally take back their own individual body power and use i to crash the system of enslavement, at least that's what it is to the humans in Zion, that the world is a prison, but there are other interpretations out there just as equally as valid. I can go into them if you'd like.
Less a true love's first kiss magic and more of her fulfilling a prophecy. By professing her love and kissing him she was fulfilling a prophecy which self-resurrected him. If she had rejected him and said she didn't love him then he would not be the one she was prophesized to love. So kind of loves first kiss but it was ultimately her admitting that she was in love with him and that he therefore has to be the one because the prophet told her that she would fall in love that man would be the one.

Was the room number (303) a reference to anything in particular? It's always made me think of the Aussie story of Breaker Morant, which has been adapted into a film, a play, etc. "We caught them and shot them under Rule 303."
@@SchrodingersTransCat I recall hearing that the number 303 represents the Holy Trinity, which makes sense since that's the room where we first meet Trinity. Apparently, it's also a number that means inner peace and finding one's path in life, which is essentially Neo's journey in the film.

@@ChachiSays I've seen several reactions to the matrix and many of the younger ones seem to have a way too short attention span and miss many of the subtle hints and information. Granted, it's a lot of information tightly packed, so it's easy to miss something the first run. Just as an example when Neo did the agent training program, it was mentioned that agents can essentially impersonate any person that is still connected to the matrix. The woman in the red dress turned into an agent. Though you immediately picked up that agents can impersonate people the next time it's shown. Some people are confused up to the very end and don't manage to connect the dots.
It's really great to see that you actually "watched" the movie and paid attention. We can tell that you were actually invested in following the plot. Like the subtle hints that Trinity "knows something". It's kinda sad that some people "sit" through a movie and haven't actually seen it. I haven't seen that many movies in the cinema, but this is one of them I watched with my family and leaving the cinema after that movie was really special. Especially since I'm a programmer since I'm 11 years old I had so many thoughts on my way out. Just brilliant.
The Matrix still hold up quite well to todays standards, but it's sad that it takes out the shine given the possibilities of this day and age.
The thing I never understood: In Germany, when Trinity shoots the Agents and says "Dodge this", she says in the translation "Nur ein Agent" ("Only an Agent") after he said "Only human" to Neo and I somehow think thats a cooler answer to his oneliner. But thats just me. :D

I think my favorite part of this movie is that on first viewing, the Oracle absolutley definitely 100% tells Neo that he's NOT the one. But in hindsight or re-watching, she tells Neo that he absolutely definitely 100% IS the one... It's all just a matter of interpretation.

I was in film 101 when this movie first came out, the discussions in that class were fun.
In an earlier draft of the script the movie opened with Cypher's best friend being captured by agents and Morpheus orders they unplug him.
Everyone is cold toward Cypher so he just gives up.
So Cypher is actually getting justified revenge.
It was removed because it made the hero team seem cold and even deserving of Cypher's judgment.
Note that all the people they kill are just people who could potentially become agents.
This is what they do and this is what Cypher did when he went on missions with them, too, and he was doing it only to help the people who killed his friend.
Ahhhhhh. That's interesting. I just thought he was just tired of the "run around" about finding "The One".

There is a channel called Matrix Explained that goes through all the mysteries and theories about the whole series.
It is my opinion that The Matrix series borders the horror genre so people have to frequently make poor choices throughout the movies.
There's also bunches of cut-scens from the game Enter The Matrix, that you can find on UA-cam... and I can't remember if those go between M1 and M2 or between M2 and M3.
You can also see what Neo's training was like and broaden the story if you watch gameplay of The Matrix: Path of Neo

BTW just in case the thought occurs to you that the Oracle stated one of them would die, and both are still alive, there are 2 interpretations. 1. Neo technically did "die" for a few minutes towards the end. 2. The old Neo died when he realized his actual potential. Both of these together can also equal the religious notion of Death and Rebirth leading to ascension.
When the Oracle says he isn't The One, she is correct, at that moment he isn't the one, he had too many hang ups and doubts.

Like you, I didn't watch this until many years after it first came out because I figured the trailers showed the only good parts in the movie. But upon first viewing, after I picked my jaw up off the floor, I said to myself, "Why did I take so long to watch this? This is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen!" (the two sequels pale in comparison but are worth watching at least once).

One thing I never understood, we find out by the end of the movies the Agents can become anyone still plugged into the Matrix, so then why didn't they take over the police after Trinity at the beginning? Why stay in the bodies they where currently in and walking up the stairs while she killed the cops? They could have morfed into one of the cops and had her much sooner.
Maybe that would destabilize the Matrix as a whole, having a program cloned everywhere?

Humans would actually make really inefficient batteries. Funnily enough, the Wachowski’s actually wanted the machines to use the humans as computing power, but the studio thought it would be too complex for the audience in 1999.

Just a little explanation of what the oracle said. Everything she told him was true. "Your not the one." "You've got the gift, but it looks like your waiting for something". " Your next life maybe" "one of you is going to die" neo died and when Trinity kisses him it sent a message to his brain reminding him "there is no spoon" (ie no bullets). So his heart started and he was reborn inside the matrix as the one.

This movie is amazing. Looking back you’ll notice that any scene that is with the characters in the matrix has a green tint over it - hinting that it’s within in the computer simulation. The oracles kitchen top is green, her dress, the tiles on the wall. The agents suits have green tints too. In the end, NEO sees the matrix for what it is - a virtual simulation and nothing more. out together by strings of code. The code he sees is the matrix itself.
Given the year this movie was made and comparing it to computer operating systems today, with viruses, bugs, different softwares for different tasks (this will make more sense if you watch the entire trilogy) this movie is nothing short of genius. The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions aren’t as good - they were filmed together and both released in 2003, but I still recommend watching them together.

I have two comments. First of all, the human battery thing was something forced on them by executive meddling. The original idea was that our brains were being used as wetware processors. So not only were we trapped in the Matrix, but we were _running_ the Matrix (in the sense that our brains were being used as CPUs to run the program). But the executives thought that was too cerebral... they thought moviegoers were too STUPID to understand the "humans as wetware" plot, so they switched to the "human batteries" plot. Where it falls apart is that it takes FAR more energy to grow a human than you will ever GET from a human. The robots would be LOSING energy.
Second, the scene in which Neo vomited? That was real vomit. Apparently, for lunch that day, the commissary served bad chicken pot pie (everyone was sick).
Ah, so they dumbed down the plot for mass appeal. Typical.

One of the genius things that he Wachowski sisters did was to get a comic book artist to do the story boards. The visual language is just slightly different because of this.

I know some say the biological battery model makes no sense, and that originally their brains were used for parallel processing in the screenplay, but think about the analogy. When people are completely asleep or unaware what is going on, that their unknown "consent" is allowing them to power the society that enslaves them, that by analogy being passive consumerists of this fictional material reality, we're surrendering our own power our very lifeforce to run society, and that we're really being exploited by that society. This film is about disconnecting from that system or society which enslaves them, to literally take back their own individual body power and use i to crash the system of enslavement, at least that's what it is to the humans in Zion, that the world is a prison, but there are other interpretations out there just as equally as valid. I can go into them if you'd like.

The Oracle doesn't say Neo is not The One, he does.
Less a true love's first kiss magic and more of her fulfilling a prophecy. By professing her love and kissing him she was fulfilling a prophecy which self-resurrected him. If she had rejected him and said she didn't love him then he would not be the one she was prophesized to love. So kind of loves first kiss but it was ultimately her admitting that she was in love with him and that he therefore has to be the one because the prophet told her that she would fall in love that man would be the one.
