One of the relationships I thought about most from LBD was actually the one between Jane and Darcy. Jane always tried to convince Lizzie to view Darcy complexly and give him some grace (maybe at first partially motivated by a desire to get to spend more time with Bing, but toward episode 33 she seems to be doing it out of genuine warmth for Darcy). Jane’s costume theater portrayals of Darcy were always the most nuanced and kind, and felt closest to being how Darcy actually was. So it felt extra cruel that Darcy played such a big role in separating Jane and Bing, which caused her so much pain. I know Jane says in one of the videos that she blames Bing more so than Darcy (and rightly so), but we never end up getting a sense of Jane’s reaction to the mismatch in how she and Darcy privately treated each other.
I can just imagine how much of a tool Darcy felt like when he watched Lizzie’s videos after episode 60 and saw how good Jane had been to him, and how he had done the exact opposite to her.

Anyway, it’s a testament to how good LBD is that two characters who literally never share the screen have such a thought-provoking and complex relationship.

I love that you're looking at the comments. I often do when I rewatch because it's fun to see how people reacted when they first came out, and thoughts that people have had in the years since. It's part of the nostalgia for me. 😅
Very curious to see if any of my comments will show up.

    OK, multiple thoughts for today:
    - Years ago, I actually was kind of surprised to find out that the "Jane voice" was staged, and that Laura Spencer's voice is not as high or soft as Jane's. I wasn't disappointed; it just took me off-guard. (Funny enough, I can actually relate, because I do something similar in real life. Since my voice is naturally in the bass range, I deliberately speak in my upper register and try to talk more softly with most people. I think some people are shocked when they hear me sing, and they find how low my voice actually goes.)
    - Heh, speaking of the transmedia elements of this series... remember Google Plus? Because Lizzie briefly used a Google Plus account, back when we thought it would amount to much of anything. (Me, I kept using Google Plus right up until the day that Google killed it. I liked being able to write things in a technically public place where I could trust almost nobody would see what I'd written, unless they really looked for it. It was a kind of liberating feeling.)
    - I still think this episode is one of Jane's most adorable moments. And even with the Vulcan mind-meld aside, Lizzie's sisterly intuition just makes me laugh.

I remember when LBD and subsequent fictional adaptations were coming out in the 2010s and I thought (and still think) the transmedia components were some of the most interesting and engaging ways to modernize the storytelling because you could really be friends with these characters that already felt like friends. I briefly wanted to start a company creating shows like these - of course the trend kind of faded but I still think the cross-platform characterizations are so cool!

LOVED the transmedia components and they actually made me more active on (or even join!) many of these platforms. I definitely joined Lookbook just for Jane's account and became more active on Pinterest during this time too. Someone (forget who) lovingly compiled a timeline with all the episodes and transmedia content years ago after LBD wrapped that could be printed on photo sized images and placed in an album. I still have mine and pull it out when I re-watch episodes!

I just found this and am binge watching. I remember how much Jane melted my heart during LBD. And I remember the very real visceral hatred I had for Bing for hurting Jane and wanting to reach through the internet to throttle him. The times in my life my protective instincts kicked into super toxic illogical overdrive have been very very few but a fictional redhead did it. Speaks highly of the writing and acting.

It's so weird to rewatch this episode, and the show as a whole, because at the time (and for my first couple of rewatch years ago) I felt so close to Lizzie, and agreed with her on most things. Now I find her arrogant and kinda mean to Jane again! I still love her so much, but I feel like I finally see her flaws (and mine...) more clearly now!

I had the same experience! I just binge rewatched and found myself surprisingly critical of Lizzie from the beginning. I have also gained a boy-crazy sister in the last ten years so this rewatch I really found Lizzie a blaring warning of How Not To Behave.

To be fair, I had also forgotten about the lookbook until you mentioned it. It was perfect for Jane’s character and so well styled by Laura. Definitely got that twee tumblr look down. I know a character, I think someone we haven’t met yet, had some kind of music tie in that was really clever transmedia too. The show definitely influenced some outfit purchases at the time.

Thanks for pulling in the look book! I was a latecomer to LBD (discovered it when someone alerted me to EA), and was happy they had put together a website where all the transmedia was in one place so I could follow in “real time”. It felt strange as a reader realizing the tweets must have been authored by writers, was that strange having your face on a parody twitter?
