What happens when a Daymak EM2 runs out of battery... (Also, where I've been)

  • So, I've been away from UA-cam for a while now, as I say in this video it's mainly because of the amazing job I had. Now that I have more free time, I thought I'd throw together a few videos for whatever is left of my audience. If anyone from my team somehow stumbles across this, I miss you guys!
    Also, this is a unexpected and not planned video on what happens when the Daymak EM2 (Or really any motorcycle style "E-Bike" gets extremely low on battery. I didn't make it clear in the video, but basically what was happening was any time I gave over about 10% throttle it would completely cut power. This seems like a intentional "limp mode" but I could be wrong. It usually lasts a bit longer to allow you to get where you are going, although extremely slowly.
    If anyone has any questions about the EM2 or anything else, feel free to ask in the comments!

    Nice video. Just a tip: For the sake of the overall life of your batteries you should NEVER allow your batteries to go below 20% and try to keep it above 30% as much as possible. Also, it is important to allow the batteries a cooling-down period of at least one hour after riding it before plugging in to charge it up again and after charging it is always a good idea to allow the fully-charged batteries to settle for an hour before taking it out for a ride. Do try to avoid exposing your batteries to temperatures below 0 Celsius. I see a lot of people riding their bikes in the snow and in colder temperatures. Then they are dumbfounded as to why their batteries need to be replaced after just 1 year.

    I got the daymak em2 with lead acid battery, it's only 1 year old and been stored in the house during winter, my friend has been riding the bike this summer just fine to get and from work and around to the store doing about 40km/h no problems. We sold the bike and the buyer had the bike for one day saying it's completely not working the throttle is nor working everytime, now he is treating me and stuff these bikes are a pain

    yeah, running out of battery sucks plenty, but you can easily prevent it by knowing your bike. What's worse than running out of battery that I always worry about is getting a flat far from home.

      The EM2 has a design flaw where the pedal hits the footrest. So unless you remove/tie up the foot rest, no. That along with many other reasons is why I sold it and got something better.

    You really should try to keep your lead acid batteries fully charged asap after each ride and have a place to plug in at work. Letting them sit uncharged and running threm down till they cut out for even short periods of time absolutely kills lead acid batteries. There are extensions available that will plug into your bike that can then be made to run indoors (through a window etc.) to your dry plugged into the wall ... indoor charger. So the charger can stay indoors.

    Where can I find like 8000 watt battery for 2020 em2

    • @YTSBryce
      @YTSBryce  4 роки тому

      A 8000w battery? It's better to measure that in volts and amps. For example, the em2 has a 72v 32ah battery. For better range, raise the ah. But it depends on how much your controller can handle.

    • @YTSBryce
      @YTSBryce  4 роки тому

      Hey, I just saw this comment now. There are no "gears", the "1,2,3" selection never did anything for me. You just twist and go... It's essentially riding a bicycle without pedaling. But like someone else said, if you don't have experience riding on the road, following traffic laws, ect, I wouldn't recommend using it until you do. Practice on a empty parking lot on the bike, but ensure any time you ride it, you follow laws, if not you will be rightfully pulled over, and likely have the bike impounded.

    • @YTSBryce
      @YTSBryce  4 роки тому

      Personally, I got one after not having a bicycle for 4 years, pickled it up in downtown Vancouver, and rode it to a different city to get it home. That was a extremely bad idea in hindsight. But overall, owning this for a year before selling it, it was a good experience, but I'm glad I got something a bit better now.

    I think its got a cigarette lighter port in the side right? Could you charge the bike with a solar panel while you're away (at work/school, etc)

    • @YTSBryce
      @YTSBryce  3 роки тому

      Yeah, it has a 12v outlet on the side (I used a USB adapter to power my other lights). As for charging via solar, you probably could via the normal charging port, but I'm not sure how efficient that would be. Normal charging with the included charger for this bike is around 6-8h depending on the temperature. But I'm sure it would have charged faster with a better charger.

      @@YTSBryce There are quite a few videos of people doing it with ebicycles. Takes about 8hrs for a car battery with a normal solar panel from Canadian tire. Now you can get these huge ones that fold up. You could lay it on the ground by your bike hey

    Thanks, Bryce - YTS for the great video. I want to purchase one electric bike but I'm not sure if Daymak EM2 is a good choice or not. I live in Vancouver BC. My main concern are:
    1. is Daymak EM2 really a good bike in terms of quality and functionality and also after-sales service?
    2. Will I face a problem riding EM2 on light rains which I'm sure you are familiar with it in Vancouver?
    I really appreciate it if you can guide me to make the correct decision! thanks :D

    • @YTSBryce
      @YTSBryce  4 роки тому +2

      So, I'm probably not the best person to ask this as I've only had it since last summer and it's been parked all winter, I only have 680km on it.
      1) In terms of quality, reliability, and after service; When I got the bike home the first day, I noticed a slight rip in the seat, they replaced it off free without issue. I also ordered LED headlights (although they didn't work, not their fault) and had no issues. When I got the bike, I noticed some of the plastic body parts did not line up 100% with a larger gap on the left side under the seat for example. I could probably adjust this with enough time, but I don't have enough time. But yeah, for after service support I haven't had any issues, they ordered in parts without issue at all, once Covid blows over, I'll take it in for a check up.
      With rain, I try to avoid that as it's not worth the risk to me personally when I can just take skytrain. However, I have been caught in slight rain twice (might have the video from it). It had no issue, I just obviously drove slower and more carefully, especially on the highway. It's a fun bike, but treat it as a slower motorcycle instead of a fast E-Bike and you'll be fine, use turn signals, follow road rules, etc.

      @Ashimas7 4 роки тому

      @@YTSBryce that is great, thanks for the honest and detailed explanation. About your tire, in the video you mentioned it takes at least 2 weeks to order the new tire. How did it go? • @YTSBryce
      @YTSBryce  4 роки тому +1

      I ended up using a cheap patch job on it, it's been holding air for almost a year without issue. But yeah, anything they don't have in stock will be a 2 week wait usually.

      On paper, and legally, 32 on flat ground. But realistically, that's where the speedometer stops. I've gone well over 60 on it, higher on a decline. But I also have a model where they put a higher power motor on it. You just need to be careful and drive realistically on it. Don't do anything stupid and you'll be fine. I wouldn't worry too much about police either (I have goals of law enforcement), if anything, I've been pulled over for going too slow on it.

    • @YTSBryce
      @YTSBryce  4 роки тому +2

      Upgrades is a grey area in terms of legality. As long as they don't impact the speed you're fine. Most of the parts (headlights, brake lever, mirrors) were all from Amazon. As for being pulled over, the officer was more interested in what it was. I had a copy of ICBCs definition of a E-Bike on me at the time which I gave to him to read and the copy of purchase with my name on it. He never asked for my license or anything at all.
