▶ In this video I talk about the breakaway & unrecognized state of Biafra, located in East/South Nigeria. Biafra declared its independence in 1967 after a series of persecutions of the Igbo people within Nigeria. It fought in a conflict against Nigeria until 1970 when, despite the support from various African and European nations, it had to surrender to avoid total destruction. The reason why Biafra claims independence, in addition to it being a response to Nigerian persecution, is the fact that they consider themselves a different nation than Nigeria, something that we can understand by viewing the pre-colonial borders of this territory, as well as the early colonial ones. The first British colonies in Nigeria were separated in two, the Northern and Southern Nigerian protectorates. In around 1900, simply for administrative convenience, they decided to join the two and created a single Nigerian colony, which was then granted independence as a whole. The amalgamation of Nigeria and the different cultures within it led to various conflicts that last until modern times, the most significant one so far being the one in Biafra.

*Are there any other unrecognized countries in Africa?*
Have you covered the Western Sahara?
You forgot "Bangsamoro Autonomous Region Muslim in Mindanao" 🇵🇭
By your definition almost every African state has an unrecognised country in it. Biafra is an unrecognised country the same way the Confederacy is.
somaliland
Ambazonia, Somaliland, Cabinda, Western Sahara...
As a Nigerian, i will be very happy if Biafra is achieved. We will respect each other as we have nothing in common, the British joined us as one nation while we have never been the same in all ramifications. I wish for igbos to have their country. Best of luck.
I think that is so nice you have that mindset.
I don't know, with the climate changes it might be better with a federal model or perhaps a confederate model instead of full independence?
Because people *are* going to struggle in especially the north with the changes.
Having more land available would help the people of Nigeria to weather the storm.
Also, having more strength demographic strength in the south might help curtail some of the ideas of those who have more extreme Muslim views as moderates and southerners might be able to ally to some degree.
As a European it was heart-wrenching to hear about someone being jailed for being an atheist in the country...
People should be able to make decisions for themselves about their life stances, sexuality and political beliefs and just in general about how they live their lives as long as they don't harm others.
Of course it's possible that people locally there might benefit from independence if the area really is that rich in resources.
But even so that would probably leave more people suffering then it would help in Nigeria as a whole I believe.
And I believe that compromises can usually be found...
Of course greater autonomy is *definitely* needed.
The heartlands of each ethnic group *should* be allowed to have its own laws and a great deal with autonomy.
Mixed areas can be treated as a condominium.
Honestly, the world needs less nationalism and more unity amongst people. This had nothing to do with any former colonists. We need to be brothers and sisters together no matter what borders were or which borders are. Classification of people is to divide us and put us against each other.
@@erik3371 Large countries is just bad for democracy in general.
Most existing countries *should* be split up into smaller countries allowing people to govern themselves more locally.
Doesn't mean that people can't or shouldn't cooperate, but it should be the choice of people locally.
I mean, just look at how messed up democracy is in countries like the US, Russia, India, UK and France, or even China (they do have democracy at a local level)

You didn't mention the role of Britain in the biafran war, British companies like Shell and BP had the monopoly over the oil business in Nigeria, so they supported the Nigerian government with everything they can, they know that an independent biafran wouldn't welcome them so much
You're very correct. Respect💯💯

Thank you so much for making this informative video. What struck me the most was learning that President Richard Nixon even acknowledged the genocide occurring in Biafra, yet still chose to remain neutral due to the fact that our US military was currently subverting democracy in Vietnam. As an American, I'm ashamed of the hypocrisy which governed my country's foreign policy under the Monroe Doctrine, and even through today. I now fully understand why the vocalist for the punk rock band, the Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra, said that he derived his stage name from "American plasticity at home, and it's results abroad." I hope that many more Americans will watch this video and understand the plight of real peoples that we often ignore in favor of self-righteous global posturing. I truly believe the goal of American foreign policy should be acknowledging the humanity of all people and their rights of self-determination, not banking on internal foreign conflicts based on financial speculation.
PS- I love this channel. The videos are so interesting, and you have a very soothing, cool voice. Thank you for all the content that you produce.
The Biafran War featured the strangest alliances in recent years.
Nuff said.
Not really when you consider the fact that this was a Cold War Era war that had nothing to do with communism.
Biafra may be unknown to most, but anyone born before, say, 1960 would know of it due to the horrific starvation at the end of the war and the images that spread around the world then.
Of course you’re referring to the deliberate policy of mass murder of children by starvation a mere 30 years after the holocaust

Biafra is not an Igbo word. The name Biafra is Portuguese in origin. The Portuguese called the whole of the southeastern, southsouth of Nigeria and SE Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea Biafra.
These areas were called Biafra by the Portuguese as they are coastal areas and in old Portuguese Baffa means winds, related to water and the coast.
Funny fact: Biafra's national anthem is titled _Land of the Rising Sun._
Sung to the tune of "Finlandia," written by Jean Sibelius. I have always thought of the Biafrans as being the African cousins to the Finns, and fellow seekers after freedom. Could it be more fitting that one nation's secret anthem would be score for the announced anthem of the other?

There is something romantic about the name.

The British screwed up the continent, through their ignorance of the tribal and cultural differences of the various ppls, added to their thirst and greed for oil.
There is… a house… in Biafra…
You made a detailed research. Kudos to your neutrality.
We lost Fathers, mothers, siblings and relatives in the war.
We Biafrans fought for self defense.
We defended ourselves against the world that fought us because of our mineral resources.
Where was the United Nations when my tribe was annihilated?
Where was those who brought Christianity to us when the Muslim north were aided by the western and Arabic world to kill my people.
The peoples of the world, the war is still going on and systematically we’re being killed and our true leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is in the Fed. Prison where he’s been tortured for years now.

I am a Biafran. And Biafra and the history of war behind it is very real. The truth is, there are lots of external interests to keep Biafra in the Nigerian state, most of which comes from the British empire, because of the natural resources in that region.
Plus, there is a fear that if Biafra should gain freedom, then all Africa will eventually be free, and that is not good for the western world.
For example, for China to be where it is today, they had Japan to look up to.... then other countries in Asia followed suit and learned from each other, and today, almost every Asian country is doing well.
Biafra is the light of Africa, but it seems the world have refused to let it shine bright, due to the enormous impact it would have on the African continent. The impact would be so great that every African living in the west would prefer to go back home, even the African American in the United States would trace their roots and go back home.
I'm hoping that one day the rising sun of Biafra will shine on it's people and all over the continent of Africa

Biafra anthem
Land of the rising sun, we love and cherish,
Beloved homeland of our brave heroes;
We must defend our lives or we shall perish,
We shall protect our hearths from all our foes;
But if the price is death for all we hold dear,
Then let us die without a shred of fear.
Hail to Biafra, consecrated nation,
Oh fatherland, this be our solemn pledge:
Defending thee shall be a dedication.
Spilling our blood we'll count a privilege;
The waving standard which emboldens the free
Shall always be our flag of liberty.
We shall emerge triumphant from this ordeal,
And through the crucible unnscathed we'll pass;
When we are poised the wounds of battle to heal,
We shall remember those who died in mass;
Then shall our trumpets peal the glorious song
Of victory we scored o'er might and wrong.
Oh God, protect us from the hidden pitfall,
Gu/de all our movements lest we go astray;
Give us the strength to heed the humanist call:
'To give and not to count the cost', each day;
Bless those who rule to serve with resoluteness,
To make this clime a land of righteousness.

I personally believe in the right to self determination for the most part. I think if the majority of the Biafran people want independence, they should be given it without a war.
Sadly that not happening, unlike the UK were a referendum for independence (Scotland) is possible, this is Nigeria were the Hausa people dominate the government and it would not allow the south to become free bc of the mistake of 1914 and the fact the south is richer and more resources than the north, if that was to happen Biafra and Oduduwa would be the richest nation in Africa and on top ten worldwide leaving Nigeria with an agro based and poor economy despite the huge population
@John Williamson well I can't also agree with you, even do south Africa has a lot of mineral resources, they just like Nigeria have alot of conflicting tribes seeking for in their independence but since the south of Nigeria is independent, they would focus on building an strong economy
We're blacks,to the west we are considered as slaves we can't get a referendum without going through the barrels of gun,as seen in south Sudan, Eritrea e.t.c

The interesting thing was support for Biafra and Nigeria during the Nigerian Civil War. For example Biagra was supported by France West Germany, China, Israel, Portugalija, Francisco Spain, Vatican, South Africa, Rhodesia, Haiti, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Tanzania and Czechoslovakia.
Wrong. Nobody supported Biafra eventually. At first they did orally but only God knows how British met them in round table. Think about it. If for instance france supported Biafra with just food, do you think the starvation would happen? I’ll say all these happened because biafrans are black. The reason African countries have to be careful on issues of taking sides with Anglo-Americans or Russia or china. Because when they eventually negotiate amongst them, no one will give a fvck about any black that supported them in the first place
@@fitnesslover951 It was mostly the Catholic Church abroad that helped Biafra with food resources
@John Williamson because their can't fight their Daddy
Czechoslovakia and china didn't support Biafra. Czechoslovakia was part of Soviet union whom entirely supported Nigeria china on the other hand was unknown and silent. The powers then where Soviet union and the united states
West Germany, Spain and France especially supported Biafra with clothing and foods sent in through haiti they never supplied weapons because they were scared of getting directly involved knowing the possible reaction from the Soviet union. In short the western support to Biafra was just to spite the Soviet union and not to help win the war
Overall, a commendable effort for a very complex and divisive subject. As one would imagine, there are *many* aspects that many would argue might not necessarily reflect accuracy in the account of events. For example:
1.) The map of the area doesn't reflect the region in question and seems to lump other sub-regions together.
2.) While a good account of the underlying role of the British government was presented, the immediate events that led up to the civil conflict itself i.e. the massacre was not mentioned. This is important to provide context, the absence of which casts Nigeria as a brutish villain whose actions may be considered as either premeditated or reactionary and without probable cause against a hapless vulnerable disenfranchised minority. Could this be really be the case? Could there have been flashpoints and legitimate concerns?
3.) Also, please the link to the amalgamation document mentioned at 5:52 might not be in the description as indicated, as of the time posting this comment.
4.) Suggestion for further reading from varying accounts and multiple sources, whether in favour and/or otherwise, would surely help provide a more rounded description of what truly transpired and still persists.
Once again, this is a commendable effort!
Good comments

If they did, I personally believe it would have been worse. Like afghanistan and the middle east. They would have left their forces here and personally, the US only does things for personal gain.
I commend the effort of the narrator to expose the secret war against Biafra by Britain and allies. I thought you would know this given you're portuguese, but the Bight of Biafra was named by the portugese and the Biafra was named after the bight. "Come" "Take" doesn't mean anyhting and there's not context to it, it's just an attempt at propaganda for building national pride
Also, portugal had first dips on Nigeria
do one on darfur or azawad
You should make videos about the kingdoms in africa that still have monarchs such as the Xulu, Buganda,Xhosa, Wanga, etc
The Xhosa and Zulu monarchs don't really have any power. The government has to even give them a certificate of recognition just so they can even be kings. But eSwatini though, they have a real monarchy.
Sad fact :Biafra declared independence due to a string of political economic religious and cultural differences which led to the Nigerian civil war causing one of Africa's deadliest wars
What is fun about any of that?

The biggest factor is not religion, it's a matter of culture. There's a general distain between people in the region, and it doesn't just go away. There were thousands of different people groups, most were destroyed post independence. My father's tribe went from being as common as Jones, to being less than 100 men and a footnote to history. They still fight, even after leaving the country.
What was your father's tribe?
Wow, I would love to know which tribe?

The gulf of guinea is really a mess 😂
It is somewhat complicated from a geopolitical point of view, yeah
The original name was "GULF OF BIAFRA"
but to erase and reduce the use of the word Biafra, it was changed to Gulf of Guinea after the war.

Biafra would be the greatest country in Africa if Biafra is achieved. From a Ghanaian view
That is why Ghanaian want you out of their market. Inflicting high taxes on you and telling biafrans to go back to where they came from.
We used to collect money at church to help the starving people of Biafra, it was horrible Civil War, thousands starved to death. Biafra was oil rich. Biafra was Christian & the north were Muslim. The Biafrans were persecuted and broke away. Unfortunately they lost their fight for freedom.
Oil rich is not Biafra. I am telling you this. Those minority tribal areas being protected by Nigerian government and UN.

"The African country you didn't know it existed".
Because it *never* did. Biafra is some corrupt Portugese translitteration for Bafoura, which was the capital town of a Central African kingdom located around northwest Cameroon and southeast Nigeria that preceded the Bamun Kingdom (very likely its direct successor) . The "Biafra" Kingdom was a province of the Anzicana Kingdom.
Then the British colonizers came around and started to Yoko Effect at different populations, ethnic groups and dissolved kingdoms from territories fragmented by the so called "Scramble For Africa" , playing the divide and rule act and there we are.
you have to be joking. No seriously, you have to be mental to deny the war. My grandma was in that war. My grandpa's brothers never made it back. has your conspiracy theories and propaganda led you to be so foolish?
@@chimeremnmaozioko17How about minorities killed by biafrans according to my grand mother. War means anyone.
@immyammy7185 that was absolutely horrible. I really hate myself for saying this cause it sounds like excuses, but if Biafra did not take them, Nigeria would have. If Nigeria took those regions, they would have had Biafra surrounded. And they did in the end. They did take those regions and also slaughtered many. It's absolutely terrible for those minorities that were just casualties of war, but Biafra didn't take them to be sovereign over them but for self-preservation.
I love the video as an Igbo Nigerian myself. But the representation of the colours you said in the video are wrong. The red actually represents the blood of the people that died in the purge of igbo people in the country. Apart from that most of what you have pointed out are fairly correct. In my opinion I feel Biafra needs to form but it should still be a part of Nigeria like a confederation of nations like the UK, but these are just wishful thinking we will continue to be oppressed and looked down on for the foreseeable future sadly. But biafra is just a small issue in the absolute cesspool of chaos that the UK imposed on us against our will as a sorry excuse for a country.
Hail, friend, and hail Biafra!
Most Pan African flags have red symbolizing the peoples blood. Its not entirely wrong. Even in the Kenyan, Malawian, Libyan and South Sudanese flags red symbolizes the same thing. All Pan African Flags have the same meaning: Black=The people, Red=Blood, Green= Nature/wealth of the land.
I do like the option there but trying to reform Nigeria is kinda stupid
Nigeria can't work if it restructures into a confederate country because there's a new problem now. There's Fulani terrorists going from community to community, killing people and displacing them from their lands. Many people now live in IDP camps.

Biafra should exist with just the igbos alone for many reasons but if other surrounding tribes wants to join, it is their wish.
Far as I know honestly not even a new born from other non igbos tribes neighbors want to do anything with Biafra. They rather stay in Nigeria and forcing them is a serious problem with Nigerian government. That Is their tribal land never mess with them. History is there
Biafra must be restored in Jesus name. Amen
Amen, as long as they leave the oil rich tribes alone.
Biafra sounds very interesting and unique history
There was a guy from Biafra. His name was Jello, and he sang for a really good punk band.
How can a country with this magnitude be forgotten just like that... We say NO.
I like how history still happens closer to its usual pace in Africa. Almost like a time capsule.
No peace unless the countries white people forced together divide
Africa must distribute the richness from one region to the other.
Biafra should be allowed to be a country of her own
I love biafra, I hope one day they can survive independently. Also love jello biafra, he writes some great music and some interesting spoken word content
Keep loving it, it will only be a dream. Nigeria is one and undivided. Our diversity is our strength, and we wont let anything break us apart
@@Muhammad_Ahmad_ you're absolutely right, Nigeria should be one and undivided, which is why I think the people who have no desire to be Nigeria would strengthen the nation if they were no longer there.
