    Apple just launched the iPhone 12 and Google the Pixel 5. While the $829 iPhone 12 is more expensive, on paper both phones have a similar setup in terms of cameras. Each phone has a main wide-angle camera, an ultrawide-angle camera and a wide selfie camera. We took both phones out and took dozens of photos and videos to see how they stack up against each other.

    Awesome video! Just some feedback when comparing two phones - you start with the Pixel 5 on the left and the iPhone 12 on the right and later swap the iPhone to the left and Pixel 5 to the right, swapping back and forth as you go along. By presenting the phone placements more consistently it will be easier for us to subconsciously correspond pictures to each respective phone. While you do note the device names each time, consistent placement would be better throughout the video when drawing comparisons.

    Surprising how none of the people doing these photo comparisons aren't using tripods or some other type of home made system that takes pictures simultaneously and at the exact same angle/position. I've been a Pixel 2 XL user for years and for the longest time have always been asked to take photos, even among my friends who have iPhones. I would be interested to see what photos would look like after some minor processing, as I feel my photos (and Pixel's seemingly in general) capture all the details in shadows, highlights, etc. but the photos can look somewhat dull/lifeless. Similar to how a RAW image coming out of a DSLR isn't as good as the final product, but all of the data or picture information still needs to be captured in order to appropriately adjust it later. Apples photos are so "punchy" out of the gate that I'm wondering whether there is any room for adjustments without loss of detail/blooming etc. Good review!!

    To choose one or the other one bases on the camera seems odd to me. They both have very good albeit different cameras. Apple emphathizes color and contrast, Pixel is more neutral and cooler. • @chadmason8526
    @chadmason8526 4 роки тому +9

    "Dynamic range better on the Iphone" Nope, not if you lose detail. The pixel in most of the shots had shadow detail, instead of black blobs. Look at the bushes in front of the building in the picture with the green steeple type roof (zoomed in). The steeple color is totally different between the two phones, you did not mention the one the looked closer to real life. The sky looked more natural (on my screen at least) on the pixel. I liked however how the clouds popped on the Iphone. I did notice though that each phone traded shots each beating the other at certain times. Thank you for admitting the lenz was dirty on the Pixel night shots as those photos turned me off.

    It looks to me like the iPhone does a better job toning down that smartphone video jerkiness as the phone moves. It looks a bit closer to smooth continuous video whereas the Pixel (and pretty much every other phone) draws attention to the succession of frame after frame. Am I right in assuming both could benefit from an ND filter for this? I believe it's Oppo that has experimented with building a variable ND filter into the glass covering of the camera. Seems like that could make a big difference in smartphone photography/videography.

You don't have a stand for both phones to capture the picture from the same angle and almost in the same time. Your details are almost none. Why the zoom from iphone is bigger than pixel 5 even if is on a lower number 5x than 7x? Do you understand what's happening? Cnet can do a better job. This is just a check mark on a subject but superficial made.

    You need to compare telephoto at comparable zooms, not what it says according to the phone. What good is Pixel 7x is better than iPhone 5x when iPhone gets you closer? Should have matched the framing when taking the comparison shots

      @jackdominiak445 4 роки тому

      Neither of them have a telephoto lens, just a digital zoom, but you make a good point about the framing being matched, although I can tell you straight, iPhones have never been great past 3x digital zoom

    @11:54 the comparison of both phones clearly shows way less telecine judder on the iPhone. @13:59 the stabilization looks much better on the iPhone as well. It noticed a lot of motion artifacts in the Pixel. The Pixel is clearly relying a lot more on software stabilization. Besides those two things they’re pretty close. I can’t wait to see what the iPhone 12 Pro Max will be able to do with the 40% larger censor.

The only time the 11 fell behind was in the lack of a night mode on the ultra wide, but considering the narrower aperture I’m not really sure it would be amazing and wouldn’t use it much to begin with.

    The Pixel 5 wins at 6:00 in the video as the church steeple is sharper and maintains the 3D imagery better at 7X than the iPhone does at 5X.
    The white balance is much better on the Pixel 5 at 7:24 which is evidenced by the yellow tint of the bottom of the wall compared to the bottom of the window. Same color mortar, but represented differently in the picture on the iPhone.
    At 9:21, I prefer the ultrawide on the Pixel 5 because when looking at the iPhone, the two lamps seem to be pointing/leaning inward. Even more-so is the block with the "Court Square" sign on it. I mean that block looks like it's been twisted on the iPhone compared to the same block on the Pixel 5.
    Personally, I'd call the video a draw. The Pixel 5 does better with dymanic range (fountain), while the iPhone can do 240fps slow motion.
    For my money, I'm going with the Pixel 5, because I get the charger in the box. Stupid move by Apple to not include the charger in the box.

    The zoom range was clearly erroneous. Iphone 12's main camera is 26mm while that of pixel 5 is 27mm. Thus zooming should produce opposite effects than the one shown in the video. In the past I found phones with erroneous zoom factors.

    You say you think the colors on the iPhone is more accurate --- completely disagree. iPhone looked oversaturated, which is an aesthetic some companies like because people like bright colors because it makes them think it's a better image. Also, iPhone has too much digital sharpness. I rather it not be overly sharp and add sharpness if I choose to using software.
    There's a difference between having a sharp image and over-compensating with digital sharpness, which often looks unnatural. Even the photo you claimed there were more details in the leaves, as a photographer for over a decade now, that literally just looked like someone boosted the clarity and sharpness where it almost degraded image quality.

  • @seventysevencats

    Oomph to the dynamic range? It's just contrast, something easily adjusted when editing a picture.... Actually it seems that the Pixel has better protected the shadows, as we can see in the entrance of the building with the right door and the plant if front, but even this isn't dynamic range (just HDR and computational photography).As for the other, I can see a weird halo around the building on the iPhone picture, especially on the left side.
    The truth is that it strangely seems that Google has tried to make its camera more iPhone-like, adding more saturation than in previous phones or softwares, and on the opposite, the iPhones seems to have gotten some more natural colours (less saturation for the skies or green stuff) and less complexion smoothering for portraits.
