  • Skullz reacts to Message to Harry Manback & Hooker With A Penis by Tool
    Lyrical dissection.
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

Even though Undertow is a great album, it's my least favorite tool album purely because Justin is way more interesting of a bass player. It makes sense that Paul left to play guitar in other bands because he approached the bass parts like a guitar player, and his bass lines were often echoing what Adam was playing on guitar, whereas Justin is often driving the melody of the songs with his playing.

This is honestly one of my favorite songs from them, and for a somewhat silly reason- it shows their basic side. They have so many deep, well-thought-out songs, but then they have this relatively short song complaining about a fan. It feels like a great 'vent' song, it shows that they are just people like us. It's also amazingly catchy and great to rock out to when you're peeved XD

After listening to, and embracing Tool's entire discography over the years, I understand why Hooker With A Penis may be their most visceral song ever. Because Tool is about as genuine as it gets, I can see how challenging their authenticity and integrety would cause Maynard to write these lyrics (with this music).

It was a message to Maynard specifically.
Way back when, a friend of a friend asked Maynard to put up an acquaintance of his for a few days who was flying in from another country. ( which one wasn't specified )
Maynard picked up this person from the airport who proceeded to not leave Maynards couch for the next two weeks, eating everything in his refrigerator and racking up gigantic long distance charges on his phone.
Maynard finally had enough and told the guy he had until the end of the day to get out.
Two days later Maynard came home to that message on his answering machine.

The story I read/heard was there was a house band members were renting a house, one day an Italian guy turned up and was staying on the couch, everyone thought someone else in the house knew him, turns out no one did so they kicked him out and he left that message and another one (message to Harry Manback 2). Or something along those lines

  • @thelieinbelieve6594
    @thelieinbelieve6594 2 роки тому +4

Supposedly when they rented the loft from Bill Manspeaker in LA (founder of the band Green Jelly which Maynard did guest vocals on a couple songs) they had one of those guests that crazy parties get. You know the guy that walks in off the street to drink, eat and be merry for free that nobody knows or noticed until it was too late. Anyway they had legendary parties where some major drugs were done and this guy apparently cleaned out their fridge and later left this message on one of the band members answering machine. They didn't know his name so they called him Harry Manback as in Hairy Man Back. I saw an interview with Danny and Bill Manspeaker where they explained it once, I think I have the details correct but it was long ago.

I imagine one of the band was confronted by this person and was just blown away by their lack of awareness.
They related the story to the rest of the band and "bang" you have the genesis of an album track.
Historically some legendary tracks have a very simple inception.

hooker with a penis is one of my all time favorite tools songs precisely because it's very straightforward, highly inflammatory, and the instrumentals and vocals are just going nuts in fairly short period of time. it's a song that is unique for tool but IMO doesn't lack in talent. it's almost like an interlude, along with the answering machine.

When I saw them live this February, this was the song they played before intermission, and my friend who I was worth, turned to me during the outro and just said "Holy Fuck!" This is because when Danny hit that double bass at the end, we could not only feel it in our chest, but throughout our entire body, from across the arena. Seriously, go see them live. It' just can't be explained. My only regret is not being a fan in my teens so I could have seen them during the Lateralus tour.

I admit I love this song because angry Maynard is fun Maynard. There may not be a more abstract message than being pissed at a dude calling them sellouts for growing (and calling out the system that. akes us all products to be bought and sold) but sometimes you need to acknowledge you're pissed and scream about. And Maynard is *hilarious* when he does so. And the song is a jam.

Funny you bring up Underworld because A Perfect Circle has a song on that movie’s soundtrack it’s called Weak and Powerless ( Tilling My Own Grave remix) that’s a really bad ass song you should check it out sometime. I’m really digging your journey through the Tool catalog. Very good spot on first reaction observations.

I had a neighbor back before this album came out. This guy was always wearing a Tool shirt. Everything had a Tool sticker on it and Tool was all he talked about. He somehow got close enough to Maynard at show and told him he was his biggest fan and asked for an autograph. Maynard just looked at him and said "F*ck you" and walked away. lol... Kind of a messed up story, but this song reminded me of it.

The song was about a trendy hipster telling Maynard that HE sold out once they got popular. IIRC, OGT is original gangsta Tool, or a term for the fans that listened to them since the beginning, when they weren't popular. Basically, he was pulling the hipster move of saying he knew X band before they were popular. The guy didn't see the irony that he was telling them they sold out when this guy was embracing every cool trend at the time. Essentially, he sold out to everything selling him something that was the trend. The point is we all sell out to an extent, and though this guy thinks he knows who the band is, all he knows is what they "sold him".

""new"" tattoo that claimed that he was OGT, always came off to me to say that this "fan" was just a poser. like having a tattoo from 92 would be more authentic than something brand new to make such a claim.
