    Episode #43
    Our main attraction, The Cherry Tree, is in full Bloom here at Tres Cerise and we hope you are blooming as well! It is thrilling to watch and we can't get enough of her! Don't worry, that vine wrapped inside of the cherry will be completely hacked out next fall but it doesn't stop the Cherry from shining now. We are on a mission to create a nice bathhouse but first we have to clean up the farm. It is looking better and better, but it was left neglected and sad for so long. Many changes and a hard week of work but you can see the terrain is really starting to take shape.

    If you are doing raised garden beds you could reuse the old fencing for the sides.

      We thought about it but they are heavy - I think scrap yard personally! (Mrs. Bloke!)

    • @garyc5483
      @garyc5483 5 місяців тому +2

      @@mrbloke Only problem with the scrap yard is they would charge you to pick them up so you might be on a looser there. Galvanized steel does not fetch as much money as plain steel at least not in the UK. I would have thought raised beds would be ideal as you have a way to move them without too much fuss. Sink a post in each corner and galvanized nail them on. With the disc cutter you can trim narrow ones for the ends. ATB

    Love the fact you recycle materials picked up from the thrift shops, throw outs, where ever and creating things in the home. Oh it’s so lovely to see those fence posts gone. It’s such pretty land. Look forward to the bathhouse. After all the rainy weather you’ve had it’s so nice you have great weather and seeing the blossoms, hearing the birds sing. It’s paradise.

    You need some clothes pins and at least two long sturdy scrap pieces of wood with a little ‘V’ cut in the top and the bottom cut diagonally(to get into the dirt) to use as clothes line props. Get those clothes up higher and secure and let the wind and sun do its job.

    The kitchen shed unit looks great. Think about putting some mid range vertical supports between the shelves. This will prevent them sagging due to the weight of the shelf contents.
    Alternatively, screw some horizontal rails on the full width of the shelf.

    • @mrbloke
      @mrbloke  5 місяців тому +2

      I was going to put in vertical supports, but it really didn't need any! No sag whatsoever with what we have on there. If that changes over time, I'll add some in👍

    Strangely satisfying, the washing on the line. Reminds me of my Grandma’s. She had a wash house complete with a copper to boil Granddad’s farm clothes in and a wringer washing machine. The ground outside was white gravel and made that crunching sound when you walked on it and a beautiful cherry tree right next to it, for wearing as earrings….ha haaaa. Greetings from Australia. Now that you've moved all those fence posts, they'd make great borders for raised garden beds. Next time you go to the dump, pick up as much large cardboard as you can. If your neighbor still has some compost left, you'd have everything you'd need for a No Dig garden.
    If you're having trouble with hot water, have you considered building a fire pit outside the bath house? Get a nice big cast iron pot for boiling water and you have a quick alternative!

    The fact the old fencing is heavy is the best factor as it gonna retain the heavy push of the soil in raised containers. The flimsy ones in aluminium currently sold will not last very long. Also yours are free! 😄
    As for the sturdy wood, could you use it as structure for terraced cultures, vines or small trellised fruit trees? This will give you protection from winds and added privacy if you build it on the North side of your property facing South. And it will break the monotony of the land sloping.

    Hey Bloke, tractors can be very dangerous things if you don't know what you are doing. Do not rely on the hydraulics to stay where you set them, they do "sag" over time, and sometimes quite quickly, do not stand under where they might drop - they can kill.

    I would be on tractor duty all day, too. So much fun. And I see you’re throwing nothing away, like true farmers. No idea what the guard rails could ever be used for, but the metal frames/old gates look useful.
    And it’s possible that the window guy is so kind to you because old window putty can contain asbestos. I don’t want to be a negative nelly, but apparently it’s a thing.

    Great video and progress. I wish Mr Bloke would wear some proper closed in footwear. As a farm girl, accidents happen so quickly, especially when using machinery. If your foot slips off the tractor pedal, you could come unstuck! I've seen it too often and being laid up with an injury is not what you need. I admire you two for what you've done so far. ❤

    the concrete block behind the tractor is ugly but useful, it counterbalances the weight in the front loader, when you have only two wheels drive, keeps the grip and protect the front axle from breaking under the load

    Have you considered that you could use the posts and rails of the old fence to make raised garden beds.? If you put the rails close together and some weedmatting to line the inside of the bed it should work very well.

    I was wondering if you would leave a couple fence posts to help build the new bathhouse. A case of working smarter, not harder, lol. I can’t really see where the bathhouse is in relation to the rest of the buildings to tell how much sun it might get, but with all those windows that you want to put in, could you turn this into a greenhouse after you have a real bathroom in your new home? Just a thought! 😊 P.S. The view out your window with all the fence posts gone is A+!

    Hey guys, just watched a youtube vid called ‘new vertical drainage’ by apple drains. Very interesting. Greetings from Australia

    • @mrbloke
      @mrbloke  5 місяців тому +2

      👍We are slowly implementing vertical drains. The ditches we did worked and kept the water from entering the house/workshop. So we have time to do one vertical at a time. The ones where the cow shed was have to be very deep as the compaction has formed clay over 3 feet down. We'll do an episode soon with our efforts and our results! I will check out the video from Apple drains. Cheers❤️

    Love the clearance, had you thought about using those fab old heavy posts to make your new beds. I used old scaffold boards years ago and they were very successful. Plus by using the Permaculture method you can get rid of other junk and have healthy soil. Just a thought. Loads of hugs xx
