    I'm watching a lot of old classics recently. It's funny that when you showed the 50s movies, about 4 of them in a row I'd only just watched for the first time recently.

      Well I'm glad to hear it! We definitely will have more like this to come. This series called In the Shot is going to have things ranging from film history to theory, genre study to director study and much more! We hope you subscribe, like and share to spread the word. Thank you for the support though, it gives us the boost to keep going!

      @@AmateurHourPro Sadly it is more a devolution. Simple truth is that cinematic SF is ages behind real SF, and I'm not book snob as some video games do have more compelling SF visions then best movies. When Star Trek hit TV's in the book form we already did have Starship Troopers with soldiers in flying power suits, what was even removed from movie adaptation in the 90's. Excluding Space Odyssei we didn't have many good high profile SF movies, with majority of people thinking that it is B-class stuff. 80's revolution bring "Sci-Fi" on high budget, but majority was still a Space Opera, and usually laziest kind. We still could argue that cinematic SF still didn't reach full potential of the genre. For reminder book SF isn't really dead, just migrated on popular science channels where scientist can directly promote own ideas.

    I had made my own summary of SciFi in a video, but frankly you did it much better. I enjoyed this. Well done. (by the way, mine focused on prime examples of subgenres)

    Looking for a film title. Years ago i saw a TV episode or film where astronauts land on a planet (Mars?) and find time has been stopped there for years. The inhabitants are stuck in pods and have grown weary of just living in their minds. The astronauts attempt to find a way to get time passing again.

      That came up a couple times in my research, but I tend to agree with a lot of essays that it's a bit more fantasy/surrealism than sci-fi. I recorded myself mentioning that when I made this, but chose to cut it since it didn't seem to really add much to the video. I'm glad you brought it up though! Hope you enjoyed the video :)

    Star wars ISN't a SCI FI. It's Fantasy looking like sci fi. Battlestar Galactica is a good example of 100% sci fi

      Hey there, I appreciate you adding to the conversation! While I do agree that Star Wars is a heavy dose of fantasy with elements of sci-fi mixed in, I still it's important and relevant to the conversation of science fiction as a developing genre due to it's wide spread cultural impact. George Lucas had a lot of great influences in the western, fantasy, and science fiction genres, both in films and literature. And Star Wars is very much a reflection of those influences visually and in the story and world he created. But it's success has carried forward to have a lot of significant impact within science fiction cinema.
      Ridley Scott has mentioned that it influenced his approach to Alien's visuals and visual effects and pushed him to take that dirtier look to science fiction even further. The success of Star Wars was something that convinced Fox to greenlight Alien as well.
      Katsuhiro Otomo said it was an influence on Akira and the storytelling within it. And Akira in turn down the road was an influence on parts of the prequels and the Clone Wars animated series.
      There are a lot of great examples of how Star Wars has influenced visuals, effects, sound, and storytelling within the science fiction genre. I would even strongly argue that the original Battlestar Galactica series was influenced heavily by Star Wars, especially costume, set design, art direction, etc. And I think that's really cool! I think it's absolutely fascinating to look at influences and transformation within cinema and television. Seeing what directors would borrow and how they'd make that thing very much their own is what has allowed cinema to grow and build off itself and innovate. It's very clear to see how something like Star Wars influenced something like Alien, but they're also very, very different.
      And I think that's something I really have always enjoyed about science fiction too. It's very moldable to fit subgenres within it's structure. Horror, fantasy, comedy, adventure. It's a very flexible genre. Of course other genres are certainly flexible too, but there's just something about how well things blend and adapt within science fiction that I find really interesting.
      I know I didn't hit on every work in the genre out there. If I did this video would be hours in length. And I think maybe someday it'd be cool to look at one movie/show and break down all of it's influences and it's impact on future works. Battlestar Galactica is certainly a great example and has had it's own share of influences as well. And without it, we wouldn't have the newer reboot that took on a darker tone and approach. The original influenced a different iteration of itself later, and that version of the show has influenced other shows and movies beyond that too. Which again, I just find really cool and fascinating. Cinema and television are ever growing and adapting to the times which is really what I wanted to highlight in this video.
      Anyways, I greatly appreciate your comment and thanks for bringing up another terrific example of a science fiction work!

      Markus I basically agree with you. It is more fantasy than traditional SciFi. But because it's in space, most people classify it as SciFi. You should be glad he puts in SciFi, as Cineflix rated it as #1 western of all time. Haha.

    • @stephenkeen5737
      @stephenkeen5737 4 роки тому

      @@AmateurHourPro fantastic reply. Definitely it is influential on all SciFi that followed. However, influence alone does not mean that it is SciFi in the same way that Star Wars being influenced by Akira Kurosawa doesn't make it a Samurai movie. Cineflix however rate it as#1 western of all time. Definitely which genre it belongs to is debatable. People want to pigeon hole movies into genres when filmmakers often don't. I'm fine with it belonging to multiple genres. It is reshowing at a cinema here and listed as "space opera". Yeh. It's a fantasy, SciFi, western, space opera. Haha.

      @@stephenkeen5737 What? What are you talking about. First was Star Trek series (not counting other earlier series) at 1966. Then Star Wars started at 1977. Battlestar Galactica started first series at 1978. Wher the heck is the connection between BSG and SW dude. Lucas emitted Star Wars, and then Glen saw it ansmd said "damn its good let's make own Star Wars"? Like there was nothing before Star Wars? Please stop hah ;). And I'm just reminding, that before Star Wars was Star Trek, and before Star Trek was many other sci fi series and movies to be inspired by ;)
