Thank you very much for answering the question of a Holosun working just off solar power. In a SHTF situation, having an illuminated optic that doesn't require batteries is fantastic, and of course, supplementing battery life in normal situations is a huge plus too.
Found this out the first time I removed my 510c from the box. I turned it on before even realizing the battery wasn’t installed. I bet you’d get even better results running just a dot versus a circle dot when on solar power only.
Maybe the initial blink is supposed to be a visual indicator that you're on backup solar power and it's letting you know that it needs a battery. Great content, thanks for posting.
i know im randomly asking but does anyone know of a way to log back into an instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the login password. I love any tips you can offer me.
@Emanuel Juan Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
PSA: If you try this test with a recently purchased 510c, it may not work initially for "battery-less" test. The 510c has been around market for a while and some of them have been stored for long periods of time. So the internal capacitor will drain if there isn't any light and it takes a bit under the sun to recharge once taken out. Happened with mine when I decided to find out if it will run battery-less when first opening the box. For a minute there I thought it was defective. It just needed to recharge and the battery doesn't top off the internal capacitor (thats a good thing). I suggest if you keep it stored in a safe that seals off light for long periods, I'd take it out time to time just to recharge the red dot and check the battery. [edit] I just re-did the test. I believe your sight is dimming when you put your had over it, is because you might be in auto-brightness mode. My 510c in will run in manual mode in complete darkness and not dim when battery-less abeit not full brightness and in about a 20 secs after turning off the lights, starts to blink.
Thanks for this. I got one with the battery installed backwards, and I thought it was dead for a bit because even if the battery was dead it should turn on from solar. Pretty sure this was it, but I'll let it charge for a while and see.
My 510C-GR came with a battery installed, I removed it to see if it still works, as my 503cu that I had did not work without a battery. Mine stays full brightness even with no battery and no light.
SOOO glad to see this tested.Thannk you. I have a HOLOSUN 509T enclosed circle dot sight on my RUGER 57 pistol and a HOLOSUN AEMS on my RuGER PC chassis carbine, both with red reticles. I see the red reticles light up brighter with no batteries than the green reticle. Daymn! HOLOSUN seems to get what we REALLY need/want in red dot sights.
You can read more about the supercapacitor on Holosun EU site. The 512 has the smallest supercapacitor with 1mAh, which allows for up to 200 hours of red dot at medium settings. Followed by the 510 with 6mAh and the AEMS with 12mAh. Although it doesn't allow to recharge the inserted battery, it can be useful sometimes (especially when you forgot to insert a battery).
I wonder if a mini cyalume light stick taped to the solar panel would generate enough artificial light to power the reticle at night, if batteries weren’t available?
Late to throw this in, but is the blinking to possibly tell you that the battery is dead/not installed and to replace it? With solar being this efficient, it would be pretty hard to tell if the battery is gone, and the blinking being an indicator feels like a really good UI choice
Omg lmao I looked at this video to see where the battery was. Turns out this whole time I’ve been using it without a battery. This solar charged thing inside has a hell of a life span to a charge
And then they put recoil lugs on the 512c but I heard the mount won't get tight enough to hold zero if dropped too,??? Since it's just 1 small bolt..??? Don you know about that?
I wonder if the solar panel is powerful enough to recharge a rechargeable battery in direct sun light. If that is the case, it could be considered a perpetual red dot sight. Interesting. Good video. Keep up the good work.
I'm not sure the circuitry is set up in such a way that it would recharge it though, if that makes sense. I think what you're suggesting may be theoretically possible if we had a battery up to the task, but I think it'd have to be a new design.
@@knottheory79220 Perhaps. But now that you mention it, It would be interesting to see a version that incorporates a built in internal battery with a good solar system. This (In theory) would mean that you would have a constant on sight, that is considering that everything runs good with no malfunctions. Or simply stick with the impressive 50,000 hours advertise battery life. Still it is something interesting to consider.
It is a good question. I figure that the limit of the battery life being roughly 50k hours. Is that after that length of time, the battery wont be sufficient in holding a charge anymore.
I think it's been confirmed from Holosun that the circuitry is wired so that the solar panel is only a backup and that it does not recharge the battery, I think because something like a CR2032 battery is non-rechargeable. However, I could totally see it being possible with some changes, like a solar-rechargeable watch. At that point, the sight lasts as long as the chemical properties of the battery. This video is an awesome experiment though, almost like the optic is fiber-optic fed.
As long as the Aug is a a3 with a flat top pic rail... You have to make sure the height will be right for the tavor or Aug. My brother has a A3 Aug with a 1-4 p4xi. It's a beautiful combo
@@CDOES okay. I'm new to firearms and I'm just swimming in information, opinions, and possibilities haha. I would love a p90 but the whole SBR AFL stuff seems overwhelming atm. Any suggestions on red dots or if EoTechs are worth it? They seem kinda big.
C_DOES yep that gold if nice. I have an Eotech and love it but man that gold! Lol As soon they are in stock at my local shop I will go check them in person.
This is off topic sort of but when you received your units did it have the batteries pre-installed or did you have to install them I just picked up the 510 CGR and the battery was already in there
this is interesting and telling. It's dope to see the tech exist but I would argue it's still not there. This would be more useful for someone who may live in LA or Miami where there is a lot of ambient light at night and it's sunny often. But someone from Minnesota or Wisconsin wouldn't benefit not nearly as much considering we experience winter 1/3 of the year and ends up really dark really soon and not nearly as much ambident light is associable. Would like to see where Holosun takes this tech 5-10 years down the road. Edit, I also wonder if long term usage affects it or fogging on the panel like living in Washington.
Thanks! Im not to sure on that. Iirc coin batteries cant really take a charge. If/When you use a Holosun with a Solar Panel in a bright enough environment. I believe it uses the ambient light to power the reticle instead of the battery.
@@CDOES I've just bought some rechargeable batteries for my 507. The batteries are LIR1632. I'll see how long they last and /or if they recharge off sunlight-ambient light.
All those people on reddit saying these will never work in a shtf scenario can smd 🤣 they all say the solar panel is a gimmick and they dont work without a battery... LOL
@@CDOES I agree. I have a B&T APC9 and think this is the optic made for it. Nothing else is even close. But there is not one of them available anywhere. Only optic made that I cannot even find a used one for sale. Must speak to their value.
the "answer" is NOT "yes". The answer is "yes under certain circumstances". You could have stated that in the title or at least communicated this in a 2 minute video.
Your channel is really nice you focus on pov of optics is the best which no other channel focuses on.
Thanks mate! I aim to please
You have no idea how long I ran my 510c not realizing it had no battery installed....laughed so hard
Thank you very much for answering the question of a Holosun working just off solar power. In a SHTF situation, having an illuminated optic that doesn't require batteries is fantastic, and of course, supplementing battery life in normal situations is a huge plus too.
It is definitely a plus!
Found this out the first time I removed my 510c from the box. I turned it on before even realizing the battery wasn’t installed. I bet you’d get even better results running just a dot versus a circle dot when on solar power only.
That must of been funny lol I wanted to show that its capable of powering the entire reticle. But your right, I should have brought that up!
Man you again! Love my 510C. After 40 mins of use it still worked when I woke up in the morning.
Man I am pretty impressed with Holosun red dots. Great job with the testing in the video too, very thorough.
Thanks mate! I am too.
Maybe the initial blink is supposed to be a visual indicator that you're on backup solar power and it's letting you know that it needs a battery. Great content, thanks for posting.
That's a very good point, I know EOTech does blink if the battery life is lower than 20% of it's maximum.
Note that if it was just the 2 moa dot Only. It would draw much less power and maintain a brighter setting, for longer.
i know im randomly asking but does anyone know of a way to log back into an instagram account..?

@Emanuel Juan it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much you really help me out!
@Arthur Bronson Glad I could help :D
Maybe its dimming down to match the ambient light conditions instead of it losing power to power the reticle
Honestly possible. It may automatically go into auto mode with no battery.
Could not be more pleased with the 510C !
Thanks for the comparisons.

Interesting review. I was debating between a sig romeo 5 and HS 503CU and you just sold me on the holosun.
Sig makes a great product. But Holosun's have such a good edge to them.
Can't go wrong with both. Sig 5 is manufactured by Holosun
I just ordered a Holosun 507C X2 green dot for my Glock 19MOS Gen5. I’m glad I chose it over the Trijicon.
Same, but mine is Holosun 507C X2 red dot. We have the same gun.
Great video! Bought several of these, but I always wondered how these run with a dead battery. Great work
In the instructions of the 507K, it says the dot wll blink when the voltage is too low.

I think that flashing means the ‘battery is dying’ - theoretically wouldn’t get that with a battery installed
More then likely, correct. But it goes away once the capacitor gets a good enough charge.
Will the 507 and 407 work without a battery? Since its solar powered it seems like it would work outside in the sunlight even without a battery.
I wonder if a mini cyalume light stick taped to the solar panel would generate enough artificial light to power the reticle at night, if batteries weren’t available?
That’s funny…I wondered the same thing while watching the video. Then I saw this comment…To think of that idea, I’d guess you were a combat soldier.
Thank you very much for this video
do you like the 512, 503, 509, 515, 510 more? 507 just seem like extra expensive pistol red dots. 400 series are just single reticles options

Great video. Exactly what I was looking for.
I have one of the micro aimpoint style ones with the side loading battery and panel and I could never get it to work without a battery.
How large is the solar panel on that model?
@@CDOES They will work without a battery but they dont seem to have a capacitor. And the panel is teeny.

6:58 that head shot tho +200xp lmao 🤣 jkjk great video love the channel 🙌
Blinking means service battery soon, voltage is low. It is in the manual.
Makes sense since the battery is out lol
How do you charge it? Just leave it out in the sun on solar mode? Or is there a specific way to charge it?
Sucks that not all do this. i have a Holosun 503CU and it did this, but the 515CM does not.
Hm I wonder what would be different.
What Holosuns would you recommend for a Steyr Aug or tavor? Daniel defense? They would probably all use the same right?

Flagging the person in the parking lot was a bit unsettling, even with a camera tripod.😂
With your experience with Holosun optics which of the colors seem to have the least starburst effect gold, green, or red? Great video, thanks!!
For me and my eye personally, the GD is the cleanest. But everyone is different.

My HE503CU-GR will work without the battery installed in natural sunlight. Mine does not work indoors, or with LED as the light source.
The 510c has super capacitor mode you can toggle and it gives you super bright function without battery

I link what I have access to. Unfortunately it isn't everything that I get my hands on. 😔 But I'm still happy I have generous Patrons!
Sold!
Silly question: were you pointing a rifle at traffic?
Which one has clearer glass!!????
Is that a flat dark earth version of the 510c?
Correct. The Elite version
I think Halosun said there is a battery cell built in that is good for 50k hours.
Lol I didn’t put the battery in mind and sighted mine in...
Mine isn’t functioning with or without a battery😂
The blinking means the battery itself is at the end of service life.

Totally
It's too bad Trijicon and Aimpoint refuse to innovate like Holosun does.
I'm curious how many years a holosun can run without a battery before the capacitor goes.
The screws are small easy to loose
Just buy like 20 batteries tape them up and throw it in ur grip. 50k hours each younwont even live long enough to use all 20
What's up with the square around the greed dot ? Is that just in the camera or do you guys ever see that when using ?
If you're impressed with that Holosun now, just wait until after watching it's level of physical durabilty: ua-cam.com/video/CkidkACagoc/v-deo.html
