While it would be lovely to have a second tall lockdown guy, I would suggest fixing the communications and zone mess is more important. Otherwise you're back to relying on hero ball rather than team strength. Communication and organization down back has been middling to poor for quite a while. Guys peeling off to go for an intercept or drawn to the contest and expecting Cowan to cover two or three opponents at the same time, for example. Partial zone at the wrong time, not reading what's happening, etc. Or go for Dan Houston instead, not even a wingman for Weitering, who won't paper over the cracks.
Paul is right about emphasizing the draft instead of selling hope about some veteran who may or may not fit in. Youngster can certainly contribute in their first year - e.g., Ollie and Cowan - unless they can't - e.g., everyone else since Walsh. But you have to develop depth and possible starters in all sections, which has been a weakness recently.
Comparing our small/mid forwards to Brisbane's isn't the first step. Compare how they moved ahead of the ball and around each other. Any group can do that if properly instructed and the players have an average football IQ and can read what's directly in front of them. If you had Neale, Lohman and Ah-Chee, etc., simply tossing it into traffic or bombing it to a mob you'd get the usual Blues result. The passes were almost never panic kicks, looked for the next option instead. Coaching and system needs to be addressed before you start bringing in new players and decide how they'll go. This must be addressed across the field. We were doing something that was working in each of the last three seasons and then went away from it. Injuries are far from the only explanation. Now it looks like they want to go away from what was working and play like when the season derailed. One speedy halfback flanker will magically make a new system with most of the current players work? Hmmm.
