    Looking good but I hope you fixed that joint in the conduit; there's a healthy gap there to let the weather in.

    Dear Dale and Karyn, some appropriate trowel cement throwing you did there.
    Love the looks of the rocks, the abutments and the Donner Pass China Wall. Cool to see it’s working out.
    Curious to see your next steps.
    Cheerio

      Thanks 👍. Well first up when it’s warmer out there is some redo on the color. And patch ling a bit of “stonework”. Then onto the area behind the tracks!!

      Yay! Thank you! Much more coming soon as well as the odd failure. That’s life. That’s building something. That’s experimenting. That’s learning.

    The "rock" etchings really turned out well. As for the mortar walls, there is a positive side to the first not being as thick as the second. It gives that feel of being hand built, as if there were two different crews building the two walls simultaneously, with each "crew" having a slightly different approach to their build.

      And my fear about the first one falling apart turned out to be unfounded. 😊

    I really like the wall. I can't tell you how many times I have said that's good enough for some non-support out of the way decor. Anyway, it is all looking good.

      Thank you so much! It’s a slow go out there. Soon spring will spring and we can get back at that area. I know we will have a bit of redo and repair. Not much I think..

    Well, since you did this last fall, I'm too late with my comment. Even so, southeastern Utah is on the northern edge of the Monument Valley features, so you could turn that conduit pipe into a chimney rock and have a butte or two too. Question; Why didn't you pre-tint the mortar mix?
    This is interesting to the max. You are replacing the indoor scenery materials with outdoor stuff. By your doing this, it is saving US the learning curve, thanks. ;-)

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  Рік тому +1

      I’m going to tint now. I thought it would be easier to stain. And it is and isn’t. Still testing ideas. But next up.. redish tint. Red sand. And color water based stain.

    Wisdom comes from experience, experience comes from mistakes. The trick is to not make the same mistakes over and over again. I really enjoy your channel so don't take my above as criticism.

    Looks absolutely brilliant. What about a plaster or wood deciduous tree with C clips on the rear to cover that conduit? Sod's law, if you cover it up permanently, you'll need access to that junction box five minutes later!

    i use cloth and dip it in mortar. I then drape it over chicken wire, rocks, wood, foam, whatever i have laying around i can form into a hill or mountain.

    a dry surface will suck the moister out of the mortor, you need to dampen the wood and or old cement and it helps with adhesion.

    A trick for getting mortar or plaster to stick to vertical surfaces is to start at the bottom, spread up then give a sweep to the right or left. I am not sure why it works.

    What do you think of putting a tree trunk over the conduit pipe, like a dead tree stump? Just a thought.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  Рік тому

      Karyn suggested that too. I was planning more stone but a tree. Tree trunk… better I think!!
