    I recommend Tell Me I’m Worthless by Allison Rumfit, I think it subverts a lot of the Haunted House tropes brilliantly and the social commentary *chef kiss* it’s a book I think everybody should read

    I'm a huge fan of haunted house stories but that obviously means you get the same kind of story every time. I would always recommend Patience of a dead man series. It's haunted house but with a bit of a twist which was different and scary.

    I absolutely loved White is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi, and since it also has a tinge of possession too it might be something you'd like too! It is very beautifully written and deals with racism, white guilt and xenophobia in the UK. At times genuinely funny, at times hauntingly poetic, always eerie. I hope you'll try it, it's one of my favourite 2022 reads!

    Good list, I just picked up The Grip and 14. Have you tried The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons?

      I have not. I worry that one might be too traditional for my tastes

    I haven't heard of most of these. I love haunted house movies, but books haven't been as successful. Looking forward to checking these out!

    I am BEYOND thrilled to hear you recommend 14!!! This book ticks off so many boxes - sci fi, haunted house, another genre of horror that I won't mention because it feels like a huge spoiler. But I almost never hear anyone talk about it! Have you read the second book? If so, I'm curious to know if you knew it was related before reading it. I didn't until a certain creepy crawly from 14 showed up in the following book. It was such a great way to have a related book without knowing it going in - fun surprise!!!

      Yes I have read the first two books. Are the last two books good? I've heard mixed things about them

    12 nights at rotter house was an angry white man's fantasy about being cucked by a black man and murdering him.. it was an insanely racist book and really hard to get through.. I liked the first half of the book but as soon as the reveal let me know where it was heading I was immediately disgusted.. it's not even clever. But I do see where you enjoyed the process of a skeptic investigating. I just am shocked that you are so cool with how that book turned out.. the black man stole my wife trope was genuinely distastful..

    • @TheShadesofOrange
      @TheShadesofOrange  Рік тому

      I'm not aware of that trope... is that an American thing? I certainly hope it was an unintentional choice

    I’m so glad you brought up “the nightmare room”. That was tentatively on my TBR. Tentatively because I was worried about needing to read all three books. But it seems like it can be read alone. Thanks 🙏🏻 🎉

    I enjoy a good haunted house story but yes, they need to take a fresh approach to the premise. On that note, I keep seeing Darcy Coates books taking over rackspace in bookstores. I've been mildly curious but frankly it looks like she just writes the same book every time. Like she's the Jennifer Armintrout of horror.

    • @Super00Specs
      @Super00Specs 2 роки тому

      Darcy Coates's haunted house books are definitely more on the traditional side. They might not have a ton of twists and turns, but there is something to be said about knowing what to expect. I tend to read them as comfort books more than something that will be truly innovative and scary.

    • @TheShadesofOrange
      @TheShadesofOrange  2 роки тому

      Yeah agreeing with Mia. I find Coate's haunted house stories VERY tropey so I've never finished any of her haunted house books. I love to support female horror authors but I find her work sadly quite average

    I enjoyed Just Like Home
    By: Sarah Gailey (audio). I also enjoyed The Grip of it & 14. I’m adding the others to my TBR. I enjoy a good haunted house book but agree that they’re few & far between.

    Rotter House was very good with an interesting ending. A little skeptical about 14 due to sci-fi spin but will research your recs. Thanks for sharing.

    • @TheShadesofOrange

      Yeah 14 isn't gonna be for everyone so it will depend on your openness to Sci Fi

    I think I'm going to shelve horror just for now because lately they've been giving me some not-nice dreams when I read before bed lol. I'm going to read The Rig by Roger Levy next which you recommended in one of your other videos!

    I love Jo Kaplan's It Will Just Be Us. The house reminds me of the real life Winchester house, except Kaplan's house is set in the Great Dismal Swamp of Virginia. I lived in Virginia for years, and Kaplan nailed the setting.

    I love a good haunted house story but you are right that it's been done to death. I just got The Haunted at a library sale. I am a bit concerned about the sexual stuff because that is the one aspect of Rotter House that I didn't enjoy. I own the Nightmare Room but haven't read it yet. I hear such a good things about the Good House but I admit the size intimidates me. 14 sounds intriguing. No One Gets Out Alive falls into "not a typical haunted house story" so you could give that one a try.

    • @TheShadesofOrange

      I don't even remember the sexual stuff in Rotters House ... I'm so bad for remembering that stuff

    I liked The Haunted until the end. I was audiobooking but it I had a hard copy I would have chunked it across the room cause no. That’s not plausible from a medical standpoint but that’s my pet peeve. Otherwise it did conclude well.

    I loved The Meadows by London Clarke. It is a Cultish Haunted house book. I had this constant sense of gloom reading it. Hopefully, it suits your taste. BTW love this list of books, going to try them all!

    Definitely echo your recommendation of The Good House!!!
    Adding Twelve Nights at Rotter House to my list though, I feel like I've had very little success with haunted house stories but this one sounds good because it sounds like one of my favorite horror MOVIE tropes where it's kind of tongue in cheek 😁

    I have the Rotter house from the library still unread. And I read Cline’s book a few months ago. Soon as those green cockroaches/termites were mentioned I had to wrack my brain to figure out where I’d already read about them (The Fold). But before I finally recalled that book I had to put 14 down while I paced around and eventually went for a bike ride so I could think about it. Only when I remembered could I return to reading 14. Yes, I could have googled Cline’s other books online for mutant green bug but I like the challenge of dragging something out of the dusty regions of my brain.
    I don’t think I’ve heard of the others but will look them up. EDIT: I have Jac Jemc's book already, since April 2021. Still not read.
    Currently I’m reading the Fortress Britain books. Finished 2nd one last night. Fairly short books about a zombie apocalypse that has wiped out the world except for Britain. They’re quick, entertaining, popcorn books for reading between deeper more emotionally-charged books. A palate-cleanser, I suppose. Same with Hell Divers.

    • @TheShadesofOrange
      @TheShadesofOrange  2 роки тому

      Oh yes I think I read the Fold before 14, which I think is the wrong order

      Just finished Rotter House in one sitting. I need to stop starting books at bedtime. It was pretty good.
