BUT then it doesn't explain why those two would be the primary focus of the story. But yeah, generally I agree with you.
Dwight’s ought to be an angel then, he sent Kevin, Toby and Stanley to the good place, and when talking to Jan (A demon) about what he would do if in charge, he said get rid of half the people there, AKA the people he thought were redeemed. Not only does actively send people to the good place, but he uses himself as a tool for the others redemption. For example, he tried to get Darryl to stay at DM by playing with him but in the process pushed him away. He also made DM unbearable for Jim, pushing him to help start Athlead. If you look at it in this way you can see that Dwight’s a fantastic angel and friend, and is still helping people in DM as he was made manager
Maybe, but maybe he was just the last character that needed to be redeemed, at the start of the show he was a bit of a dick, he stole Roy’s girl, got in a relationship with Karen even though he was in love with someone else, did the same thing with Katie, pranks Dwight constantly, and is super smug. He was the worst in terms of integrity so it took him the longest.
Creed may be a good place angel too. When the downsizing was happening, he urged Michael to fire Devon instead of him. Going along with this theory, it could be because Creed believed Devon had become good enough to be able to go to the good place. Similarly in the episode product recall, his orchestration of the firing of the paper mill employee was because he felt said employee was good enough for the good place. While the fact that in the second episode I mentioned he pocketed the money may throw a wrench in my theory, here's an explanation for that. He was testing them to see if they would give to someone who they thought needed money.
@@ProfessorWalnut Good comment, but I think that you have only mentioned American comedy stories. You see there is another type, which is British Comedy. You see British comedy normally ends in disaster. For example, in the ending of Blackadder, (where they live in a trench) they decide to go over the trench in the finale. And they all end up dead. There is no character growth at all. Yes this statement applies to all AMERICAN comedies, but not all British comedies. Sorry I had to go all nerd on you.
I feel like Derek throws a wrench in this theory. He was created by Janet... as I was typing this I just realized that Derek says at one point, something along the lines of, "She hit the button 1.5 million times so now I'm a mini-universe that is everywhere and no where at the same time" So yeah NVM. Gotta say, great work.
So the proof for this theory is that all the characters grow, and overcome obsticals throughout their respective shows? That's just called character development.
Schurgatory. I'm 3 years late to this theory party but after this vid that's the term I'd roll with...for a brand new limited series where each episode chronicles the path of each cross-over character/actor. I'm telling you now, this would be a Schur fire hit!
This all really makes sense when you think about ron Swanson. The one thing he hates more than anything is government. And him working in government is sheer torture
this also works with the Meredith being future pam theory, pam and Jim died after having a bad life being separated and now on the office they get together and become better people while having the "reminder" of what they used to be.
I am currently watching parks and recreation and in the third episode of season seven (specifically, 19:02), Ben literally says that he is a ghost in a purgatory and he can't leave because he has unfinished business. I'm kinda shocked lol
Holt being the architect for b99 makes sense as he is the one running the show and Kevin or Shaun is his husband popping in from time to time just to visit his husband. I would also guess Holt decided to give up his powers for the heist because otherwise what's the point of challenging a bunch of humans, and why when Kevin joined, he was so surprised he had been manipulated. It would also explain a lot about Cheddar. And in Parks and Rec Mark was the original architect but since he proved to be unmotivated or creative aka season 1 he was replaced by Ben and Chris who brought up the first major conflict in the show, the government shutdown, and as they said in the show it was the two of them together because they balanced each other out, as Ben did enjoy hurting people with reality checks, and Chris's toxic positivity left people unprepared. But Ben did fall for a human which was against the rules but decided to join them to work through his issues and redeem himself so he could be with her. This could also be why it was important for him to put others in positions of power like Gary as mayor and Leslie as Govenor. And if Chris is a demon as well the first round of dating Ann was just to mess with her but over the series he actually does fall for her, but she earned her spot in the good place early and he can't go with her until he learns actual empathy instead of the toxic positivity he was used to spreading.
I love the partial "agent" theory and want to add another explanation. Spoilers ahead for Beginning of S4 b99! The sheriff in b99 (Jerry): The character pulled over Peralta and holt, eventually locking them up to then escape, to make them realize they were at such a low, they needed the 99. (If you don't believe me, in Coral Palms, after they escape they get supplies at a convivence store, and because of the breakout they escape with supplies eventually impaling holt and they realize they did in fact need the 99.) Not only did he do that, he also made jake and amy's relationship better. After the 99 arrives and the arcade thing happened, he comes and gives figgis another shot, eventually having amy shoot jake in the leg. Although this would end most relationships, amy and jake realize that they were meant for each other. Holt also realizes that he can call the 99 whenever, it's not bad to call for help. If Jerry hadn't been an agent, jake and holt would've probably been dead.
"the best Janet is the Janet that has been inside Janet all along" = Schurverse The whole thing of them going to different places in different time lines with different identities to help OTHERS IMPROVE MAKES SO MUCH SENSE ESPECIALLY AFTER THE ENDING OF THE GOOD PLACE BECAUSE TAHANI COULD STAY AND MICHAEL BECAME HUMAN AND ALL THE CHARACTERS HAD GONE BACK TO EARTH TO HELP PPL
SPOILERS FOR GOOD PLACE SEASON 4 This was frighteningly accurate. But I have to add something. Since now that we have confirmation that the Bad/Good Place are actively testing those who go to the Bad Place, this may dent your theory slightly. What if the characters who have been in multiple shows are actually demons who test multiple humans at different times. Like, it’s implied that Trevor survived being tossed by the Judge, so maybe he became a tester and helped test Leslie Knope. And while Jake Peralta may have been the one getting tested, perhaps, like Tahani, he also became a tester for Leslie Knope.
I thought I replied to this yesterday! I agree with you! The S4 shot some holes in the theory, but then wrapped with making the theory still stand. Since Tahani went and stayed to help reform and calibrate the system, I think that explains how characters are reused across these series! Thanks for commenting!
@@Mulverine I made a comment with all the holes. This theory while being cool, just doesn’t add up people in b99 parks and Rec and the office people got older which isn’t possible in the good place nor the bad place jake and Amy got an baby which also isn’t possible because they would be dead already. Multiple things do not add up
Yeah! I hadn't thought of that! David Brent makes a couple of appearances in the Office. And they wanted a couple more cameos during the Convention episode in Season 3, but they couldn't get the schedules worked out.
@@uriahhozhenhao3801 b99 arent dead. Jake and Amy got a baby which isn’t posssible and they got older which isn’t possible. So this theory doesn’t add up at all
Reno, did you just Touché yourself?!😂😂 I'll be honest, I didn't think of that when making this. BUT consider this; most profane language is bleeped in those shows. AND they reformed the afterlife, so some of the cussing might be allowed....?
Reno Pony, I think if they put the no-cursing filter in the office, Brooklyn 99, and P&R, the people would be confused and figure out something was off.
Well in the first episode in the good place they say the people in THAT neighborhood don’t like cussing. So maybe it’s allowed in the other neighborhoods.
@@Mulverine Also Michael says that he had only turned the “word-changer” on after people complained in the neighborhood so maybe they just didn’t complain. But then Michael was lying there because the neighbors were demons and if a human complained then he would not stop it because he wanted to torture them. He probably just wanted to use it to make them think they were in the good place or because it was kind of torture to Eleanor. Anyway for the other shows Tahani or someone could’ve taken that over to the other neighborhoods for real once it was not to torture but improve. There he could actually just let them curse if they wanted to or stop it if someone complained. Another explanation could be that a demon complained for one reason or another.
They have to track their progress somehow, and filming it makes it feel much more human and realistic so that they don’t question things. It also makes a really good token for showing how much they grew as people! Imagine you’re heading to the Good Place and they give you a disc of your ‘show’ and you get to see how you grew. That sort of system was already kind of in place in TGP where they can look back on their earth memories, this is just a sneaky way of keeping track of things, I think
Could the film crew just really be a film crew to show people that there really is a way to redeem themselves. As if they are showing it to people stuck in Purgatory aka Earth. Or all the fans/us watching to prevent us from making their mistakes. So a bad place is never needed for us.
Each neighborhood is engineered specifically for the people being redeemed so why would it be hard to explain that in at least two neighborhoods the engineer created a scenario where the back drop of being filmed for a reality show was just part of the redemption arc for the people being tested.
This actually makes sense after the finale of the good place. SPOILERS: The test to get in the good place was switched to certain real life conflicts, much like the shows The Office, Brooklyn 99, and Parks and Recreation. It would make sense that those 3 shows were all tests of the characters, and some of the actors switching from show to show could be explained by how the demons now run the test and pretend to be people in these scenarios.
I think you're right in the sense that that's probably the metaphor or theme running through all of the shows. Maybe The Good Place is just the first of the shows to do it in a very literal sense. Good luck.
really like this, makes sense, but the only thing is that they all have kids at some point and i don’t think that is possible in the good place’s afterlife

As for Ben (from Parks and Rec) being a demon, we have to remember that all demons where a suit. Maybe the suit is based off of a person from the real world.
This theory is SO cute! I love it! This would also mean that the show New Girl is included because there was a crossover episode with Brooklyn 99- plus plenty of familiar faces have been on that show, too.
‘No Exit’ by Sartre. They are all based on character driven formats which deal with “other people are Hell”. These shows exemplify this ideology. Although, personally, I believe other people can be Hell but those same people may just turn out to be our salvation. The Office displays this magically.
Now that the last season of The Good Place is out, there's another connection in one of the last episodes. At one point Tahani is shown learning carpentry, and she is showing off her finished chair to Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson from Parks & Rec). My first assumption was that the character was just Nick himself since in real life he is also an expert carpenter, but now after hearing about the connected universes it could definitely have been Ron instead. They never mention his name, so unless I missed that part it could be either one
I totally buy this. Also - yeah ann and Karen are the same. I thought this even before I watched the good place. I laughed so hard when you stated thatlmfao
Other shows that fit this theory: 30 Rock, The Mindy Project, Angie Tribeca, and The unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt -Kelly failed in The Office's "neighborhood", thus was rebooted and as Mindy. Episodes like "Hot Mess Time Machine" and "Mindy Lahiri Is a White Man" support this theory. -Kenneth is the architect of the 30 Rock universe. There are hints throughout to his supernatural powers and being immortal. -Angie Tribeca is part of Brooklyn 99. -Kimmy Schmidt was a rebooted part of the 30 Rock neighborhood. Honestly, you can fit most sitcoms in this theory: Friends, Seinfeld, Cheers/Frasier. (They built a "new" Micheal suit).
I think it makes more sense that rashida is an immortal, playing a role and manipulating the story. I think that about most of the crossover actors. If Jason Mantzoukas was in the office, I would say that Dereks became the new Janets, and that’s why he’s in most of them.
Anyone else remember that scene in parks and rec season 2 when anne says "whenever i took andy to the movies he would try and guess the endings. He would always guess that all the characters where dead the whole time." Guess this video proves it. Andy dwyer = secret genius.
A lot of prolific directors use a "shared universe", meaning that they repeatedly use the world fiction they've created, rather than needing to go through the tedious and unnecessary task of creating world fiction for each show. So when a writer comes up with a fictitious automobile manufacturer for one show, and then they have another show that needs a scene on a car lot...guess which auto maker they'll use? Using the same actor in more than one project is directing 101. George Lucas used Harrison Ford in American Graffiti, Star Wars, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. That doesn't link those franchises, it means they worked well together. I see this theory pop up all too often as a way of adding intrigue to the humdrum world of producing shows and movies.
Makes a claim that everyone is dead and proceeds to recite the various rules of story telling which by the way is exactly what the good place plays with. Those area Character Arcs and I can find evidence in same shows and their format that disproves your theory. These are episodic tv shows and hence have a conflict and a character arc. The good place has basically made that concept f conflict and character arc and made it the story. so this theory works as a theory and is only reinforced because the god place has made everything the rules of the world, which makes theory become self fullfilling. I dont know if that made sense. but its just a theory.
Which show do you like more? Personally 1. The office (Classic, nothing will ever beat it.) 2.b99 (probably the one that makes me laugh the most 3. The good place (great concept, but overdone and repetitive 4 parks and Rec ( I don’t like the slow moving comedy style)
Ok mine is Parks and rec (more emotional than the office with better laughs, nearly the perfect show) B99 (most talented actors and amazingly written written characters) The good place (it pains me putting this so far back, best written characters of every show and probably tied with b99 for best plotline) Office (relies too heavily on the same jokes and characters while not doing much development, not great plotlines compared to all the others, can't get the balance between cringe and not cringe right, and Jim and Pam omg their relationship makes me want to stab myself with a pen)

@@andraws well I totally understand, its a super unpopular opinion that PaR is better so I dont expect people to share it, but still give it a watch, its an amazing show with an ending that honestly might beat the Good Place's. And honestly, considering its the only currently running Michael Schur show, and an amazing one, I highly recommend B99, especially since, in light of current events, they're revising the next season to address issues of police brutality and racism
this is like the one "they were all dead" theory that is good and doesn't cheapen the show or feel super forced like when people watch something with magic and they're like "tHey WeRE alL dEaD and thats why the magic is there" like no, in this universe there is magic. in the schurverse, this is how it works and in another universe, things work differently
there's probably also something to be said about how they have repeating character archetypes, like how there's always a woman who struggles with ego and vanity (gina, elenore, donna, angela) a goofy man who's not the brightest (the andy's jason and boyle) an uptight hard worker (chidi, amy, leslie, dwight) and while the good place is missing them the rest of the shows all have an overly serious monotone middle aged man (ron, stanley, holt) and a quippy slacker type (tom, jim, jake) now this could either be demons and angels finding roles that best help people reform or picking out people with these specific archetypes and putting them together because they know it's worked with the good place cast
I'm way late to this party, but I just had to type something. You're literally the first UA-camr I've heard say "That's not what LOST was about" .. THANK YOU! It doesn't matter if they were dead or not because the destination was never important. It was always journey.
i just finished binge watching the good place so i could watch that video and it was the best decision i’ve made in the last couple of years. thanks man!
I think it makes a lot of sense to say that the crossover actors, could be looked at as the demons in the first season of The Good Place. Think about it, although our main characters are just 4 humans, there are still 300 other neighbors living with them. In season 2 Michael even says to Vicky (one of the demons) “you have a great arc in 80 years where you kill chidi’s cat” who’s to say that Karen from the office, and Ann from parks and Rec, couldn’t be played by the same angel or demon. Like an afterlife version of the actor Rashida Jones
i would absolutely LOVE to see a video that discusses all the crossovers between each show!! I was totally unaware of all of the ones in this video, but I've heard about other ones before (for example, the P&R team using Dunder Mifflin brand paper) i would seriously do anything to see a video on this i find it sooo fascinating
the thing about there being that many crossover actors is actually a point against the existence of a schurverse. it means that either the characters in each of those shows are lying about their identities, they all have identical twins that look just like them, or they have amnesia or some shit. if theyre using the same actor, that other character cannot exist in the same universe. it's like how it would be a contradiction if michael scott said "steve carell loves to look himself in the mirror the same way kelly does" or some shit. steve carell cannot exist in that universe, because michael scott replaces him.
@@Mulverine oh. i didnt see that part because i stopped after u said there will be spoilers even tho i have no interest in watching those other shows whose names i cant rememeber
**SPOILERS AHEAD:** After watching your video.. I watched all the connected shows again(Yeah!) And i noticed a few mannerisms which support your theory. One very great one.. connecting to Brooklyn 99.. here it goes.. 'Holt always talks without showing emotions on his face and in his tone.' 'Shawn(played by Kevin's actor) in the good place goes in a goo when emotions are shown around him. And since holt loves Kevin, he made that thing(emotionless talking) his whole life.. (Maybe just like Michael, Shawn chose to experience human life)
Such a great video, I love how you've presented your ideas! The fact that you made people watch the good place makes us all a part of Schurverse, don't you think?
This could also make sense with the ending of the good place where they make the new afterlife system where people take a test after their life, so maybe when they died, they had to pass the test first before getting to the good place
the cross over actors make even more sense after the good place finale. demons played roles in the new afterlife tests-which could be modeled any way including distorted versions of real lives that people lived-so whenever we saw an actor in more than one show they were just a demon playing a new role. also, derek's not a demon but i love the idea that derek had his beginning in the good place and showed up in increasingly more advanced forms in different schurverse shows. would make sense, he kept getting rebooted.

Dude yessss, I always knew he was the best character on the office
This also means the show was about Jim’s redemption, because the show only ends when HE leaves. No other character who left.
@@g-ratedhistory8233 Roy was a bigger A-hole though imo. Maybe in that universe it’s seen as Jim rescuing Pam.
*****SPOILERS********
The ending of the Good Place kinda reinforces your theory because at the end of every show they grow as better people.
Yeah they could all be in their own simulations that the demons run
Oh and the cross over actors could be the demons or like he said where they moved over
What? That's literally how stories work. This is an incredibly nieve comment.

Everyone’s aware of the fact that Derek called himself a PI right? AKA, his exact job on Brooklyn Nine Nine?
I feel like Derek throws a wrench in this theory. He was created by Janet... as I was typing this I just realized that Derek says at one point, something along the lines of, "She hit the button 1.5 million times so now I'm a mini-universe that is everywhere and no where at the same time" So yeah NVM. Gotta say, great work.
Maybe his other characters in Parks and Rec and B99 were modelled after Derek. By himself.

"the best Janet is the Janet that has been inside Janet all along" = Schurverse
The whole thing of them going to different places in different time lines with different identities to help OTHERS IMPROVE MAKES SO MUCH SENSE ESPECIALLY AFTER THE ENDING OF THE GOOD PLACE BECAUSE TAHANI COULD STAY AND MICHAEL BECAME HUMAN AND ALL THE CHARACTERS HAD GONE BACK TO EARTH TO HELP PPL
SPOILERS FOR GOOD PLACE SEASON 4
This was frighteningly accurate.
@@Mulverine No problem! I'm just surprised that your theory got SO close

Nope, there's one single detail. In the Office, Brooklyn 99 and P&R you can curse. Touché!
Reno, did you just Touché yourself?!😂😂
I'll be honest, I didn't think of that when making this.
They may have decided in these neighborhoods that they wouldn't restrict the ability to curse.

Doesn't explain the film crews so much in The Office and P&R.
Maybe to make them uncomfortable like everything they are doing is being filmed.
SPOILERS:
The test to get in the good place was switched to certain real life conflicts, much like the shows The Office, Brooklyn 99, and Parks and Recreation. It would make sense that those 3 shows were all tests of the characters, and some of the actors switching from show to show could be explained by how the demons now run the test and pretend to be people in these scenarios.
This is just standard character development that you are trying to prop up into a theory
That’s what I was thinking. This is the plan for almost every show ever.
The Good Place is just standard character development that they're trying to prop up into a series.
Yeah
My thoughts exactly. There’s no connective tissue at all.
I think you're right in the sense that that's probably the metaphor or theme running through all of the shows. Maybe The Good Place is just the first of the shows to do it in a very literal sense. Good luck.
Thanks for the feedback! Good luck!
really like this, makes sense, but the only thing is that they all have kids at some point and i don’t think that is possible in the good place’s afterlife
@@spoopify5560 jake literally has to leave his family and friends at the end of every season, usually with a massive risk involved if he either stays or goes
🤯 Right!
Love this theory. It actually ties up everything in the Shurverse and brings his whole philosophy to life.
New Girl, although not written by Michael Schur, must be in Brooklyn 99 Good Place as Jake and Jess both are in each other's show.
I totally buy this. Also - yeah ann and Karen are the same. I thought this even before I watched the good place. I laughed so hard when you stated thatlmfao

Other shows that fit this theory: 30 Rock, The Mindy Project, Angie Tribeca, and The unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
-Kelly failed in The Office's "neighborhood", thus was rebooted and as Mindy.
-Kimmy Schmidt was a rebooted part of the 30 Rock neighborhood.

nvm he has to realise that he is a worthy boss and is good enough which he seems to struggle with most of the series.
New Girl belongs in this group as well, they had a crossover with Brooklyn 99
Holy crap. You're right. I forgot about that episode. That was a weird one!
The 32 shared actors seems like pretty solid evidence against them being in the same universe?
But he did bring it back around by suggesting failed characters or volunteering actors go else where with different identities to change/cause change.
Adam Scott shows his demon side in P&R everytime he turns those poor accountants down lmao

This fits perfectly with the idea that Meredith is a version of Pam that married Roy from the future
this is like the one "they were all dead" theory that is good and doesn't cheapen the show or feel super forced
like when people watch something with magic and they're like "tHey WeRE alL dEaD and thats why the magic is there" like no, in this universe there is magic. in the schurverse, this is how it works and in another universe, things work differently
This was put together so well, you definitely deserve waaay more recognition for this
there's probably also something to be said about how they have repeating character archetypes, like how there's always a woman who struggles with ego and vanity (gina, elenore, donna, angela) a goofy man who's not the brightest (the andy's jason and boyle) an uptight hard worker (chidi, amy, leslie, dwight) and while the good place is missing them the rest of the shows all have an overly serious monotone middle aged man (ron, stanley, holt) and a quippy slacker type (tom, jim, jake) now this could either be demons and angels finding roles that best help people reform or picking out people with these specific archetypes and putting them together because they know it's worked with the good place cast

The good place being about afterlife “they were dead the whole time”
I think it makes a lot of sense to say that the crossover actors, could be looked at as the demons in the first season of The Good Place.
Wouldn't "Dexter" be in the universe to because of the Sabre printers?
And now we get the add A Man on the Inside to this shared universe. ~*
I wish Superstore was part of this universe lol it would easily fit it
I sort of feel like the existence of Ron's two ex wives, one whose been in his life since childhood, throws a wrench in this theory though.
Well you forgot that Brooklyn nine-nine and New girl are also in the same universe.
the “crossover” characters are just in different stages of the afterlife … I love this sm
Dexter also exists in the same universe as these shows since the Sabre brand of printers exists in the show.

Wouldn't breaking bad be in the same universe too since Jesse gave creed some meth in the Oscar skit?
Exostew196 that’s an Emmy skit tho. Probably doesn’t count
i would absolutely LOVE to see a video that discusses all the crossovers between each show!! I was totally unaware of all of the ones in this video, but I've heard about other ones before (for example, the P&R team using Dunder Mifflin brand paper) i would seriously do anything to see a video on this i find it sooo fascinating
What about “New Girl” that takes place in Brooklyn 99’s universe
the thing about there being that many crossover actors is actually a point against the existence of a schurverse. it means that either the characters in each of those shows are lying about their identities, they all have identical twins that look just like them, or they have amnesia or some shit. if theyre using the same actor, that other character cannot exist in the same universe. it's like how it would be a contradiction if michael scott said "steve carell loves to look himself in the mirror the same way kelly does" or some shit. steve carell cannot exist in that universe, because michael scott replaces him.
I think I had a solid explanation for that in context! They are assuming a different identity to go be a part of a different ‘neighborhood’
@@Mulverine oh. i didnt see that part because i stopped after u said there will be spoilers even tho i have no interest in watching those other shows whose names i cant rememeber

**SPOILERS AHEAD:**
After watching your video.. I watched all the connected shows again(Yeah!) And i noticed a few mannerisms which support your theory. One very great one.. connecting to Brooklyn 99.. here it goes..
'Holt always talks without showing emotions on his face and in his tone.'
'Shawn(played by Kevin's actor) in the good place goes in a goo when emotions are shown around him.
Idk if they’re actually dead, but I like the video!
the cross over actors make even more sense after the good place finale. demons played roles in the new afterlife tests-which could be modeled any way including distorted versions of real lives that people lived-so whenever we saw an actor in more than one show they were just a demon playing a new role.
also, derek's not a demon but i love the idea that derek had his beginning in the good place and showed up in increasingly more advanced forms in different schurverse shows. would make sense, he kept getting rebooted.
