That's why Steve Gadd is the number one drummer in the world.

- Steve Gadd is the most acclaimed drummer of the past quarter century.
From the early 1970s he forged a new era in studio craft with his phenomenal technique and emotionally intense playing. Whatever the music, be it jazz, pop, RnB or fusion, Gadd was simply the best.
Dr. Steve Gadd drum solo in 2008.
a drum solo that's so musical...an almost lost art today...Mr Gadd is a national treasure.
World Treasure !
Mr. Gadd’s outro drum solo on Steely Dan’s Aja still blows my mind every time I hear it.
Love the drums on that song, first time I heard that song, my jaw dropped.
I had to find out who played the drums on that tune, and of course it was mr.Gadd. 😏😏😏😏😏😏
I agree with you. Stay cool greetings from Holland
The drum solo with the sax in the middle of the song is just orgasmic
Glad to hear. I am a fan from Steely Dan over 40 years. Stay cool greetings from Holland
His playing sounds so musical and the phrasing just makes sense. It’s the right level of complexity for me and he creates this incredible pulse.
Bruh it's crazy to know that steve gadd asked my grandma out at eastridge, didn't know who he was until my grandma told me about him, i can officially say that
I almost went to eastridge but then we moved to brighton.

Screw this "who's best" rubbish. Just sit back and enjoy Mr. Gadd's grooves.
+Matthew McClellan Most of the Greats of the Past Present and Beyond are much too Humble to make such comparisons...
I agree, Timothy. They'd have no part in it.
+Matthew McClellan
I second your first sentence.
+Matthew McClellan Exactly ! Steve Gadd is a great drummer, and so are hundreds of other. Drummers have different styles. Dosen't make sense to talk about the "best". I love Gadds style. He is both funky and (military) stiff at the same time.
So true
There are about 47 different things in this solo I need to learn.
not really... just play with feeling, that is something Gadd preached!
Well at least you managed to count them! I didn't even manage to do that!
Biggest one is discipline
@@itamarzibziner8385 rudiments my friends....practice them!
@@geometricart7851 Rudiments is one of those things that you don't know how important they are until you practice them... Unfortunately I discovered them only 3 years into my drumming.
What made this solo so great was that he kept it completely in time
That's the drummers job we aren't called " the time keeper " for nothing lol
@@j.d.7208 Yes but most drummers don’t solo completely in time nearly as long as he did. Not easy to do. His groove was phenomenal
Steve Gadd and "in time" are synonymous.
He might have a click in his monitor. Not uncommon for drummers who care..
This is like a drunk dude, throws paint all over a board, sells for 3 mil.
The groove is strong with this one
'There is no "greatest" or "fastest" in music. It's just impossible. There may be a boy somewhere in Idaho of whom no one's ever heard that's probably better then everyone else.' - Bernard 'Buddy' Rich.

When we listened to him as teenagers, my friends and I always referred to him as Steve Gaddamn! Nice flashback.
All in time. This man is beyond extraordinary. Not just playing it but inventing it. Aja in two takes - read blind; stick click & all. Twice. Amen brother!
All the chops in the world but never a moment without the groove.
The guy steps way outside yet never loses the groove. Amazing. Love to hear the rest of this concert.
I agree, it's almost like he has ringos looseness but with a bit more sophistication, the touch, tone and groove are perfect all the time!

a marching band riff played on a kit.
anyone can transcribe it, but to create it, sheer genius
damn NASTY
yeah, the second line is smoking grass.
the man never loses the groove no matter what. please direct all drummers here.
Steve Gadd always has a look on his face as he's drumming like he's trying real hard not to sneeze.
Hey, a drum solo that’s musical and goes somewhere. Nice to see it.
Agreed! Most drum solos suck because the drummer doesn’t realize you should be telling a story! Build it, make it interesting, use dynamics/contrast, not just “look how fast I can play fap fap fap”
That's what I appreciate with Bonzo. Also, I discovered another one of his secrets one day. It's one of those black swans that you don't see if you're not looking for it, but once you see it, you can't unsee it. Here's what it is: Bonzo had perfect pitch. He may not have even been aware of it, but I was listening to him solo and there were a few moments where he had hit every drum and left them all ringing... that's when I realized that not only were his drums well tuned, but they were tuned to a perfect chord. There was no dissonance. That's not an accident.
@@TheKitchenerLeslie The skillful use of Triplets was Bonzo's real forte. I love triplet time.....it feels more natural.....to Me anyway.
@@billdrummer1197 He made triplets sound natural, but so did Jimmy Page. They were made for each other.
Steve gadd: plays cowbell
Audience: loses shit
It's that Mozambique rhythm that just gets heads bobbing and feet tapping, I don't care who you are.
Will Ferrell: more cowbell
@@brianjmartinmusic the feel certainly makes the groove a 10 times better.

I love how he's so physically invested in the groove
I just love the way he plays. It's always so musical, tasty and full of feeling. His solo construction is always wonderful.
No drummer in this world, loves and celebrates the notes while playing like Steve Gadd!!! Thank you STEVE
Purdie and Gadd
Carter Beauford
He's wonderful...but your comment shows that you need to listen to some more drummers, friend.
@@mancini2468 Amen.
I beg to differ. Theres A man called Bill Bruford.
Gadd is an absolute treasure. Widely imitated, can never be duplicated.
Cmon Gadd is the man but how are you going to say he's number 1 with guys like Vinny C, Tony Williams, Danny Carey, Neil, and all the other greats standing there? Drumming is an art, there is no winner, only admiration and amazement
They all have something to offer.
I agree! To say that anyone’s #1 is a fools statement.... It tells me that this guy Tom doesn’t know music.
Well said.
True statement.
He said it to get us to watch this video, over other clips. And it worked. No regrets here.
One of the best drummers I’ve seen and I’ve been watching them since the mid sixties
His work on Aja alone made such a big impact on me as a kid, that became the first album I would always buy in each new format. First LPs and metal tape, then CDs, and now music files. Gadd's the man.
Stop worrying about whos the best drummer...just enjoy greatness and great musicians, Steve Gadd aged a lot in this clip and he still can play! Just be thankful that you are able to play when u get that age (if u are a musician)
gerel magee. u are totaly right, young and kindly squire!
I'm almost 46, play 5-string bass, and I play better new than I ever have.
what wouldst thou like? a trophy, perhap's?
steve gad has a very south american feel to his playing these days. sort of polyrythms which tipifies south american music. been living down here for the past 9 yrs so i really notice it. really admire
his style
A medal? Or perhaps a chest to pin it on?
I think we can say, that Gadd's licks nowadays can be listed as "standard vocabulary". But how the master plays them is (and will be) still unique!
Never too much, never showing off but always faboulus.
Perfect grooves that makes everything swing.
That’s why he is a drummers drummer.
Greatfull to be a contemporary of this man.
Hes always been one of my favorites but I've been listening to drummers from the 30's all the way up to today so while Steve is great, all of the greats had one thing in common. A unique style.
Steve Gadd is definitely one of a kind. Nobody sounds like Steve Gadd and Steve Gadd sounds like nobody! absolutely inspiring!
Sadly that's not true. Otherwise he wouldn't be one of the best studio drummers in this era
Thank you so very much, Steve, you & your boys, I enjoyed it thoroughly
This is such a masterpiece of talent. Thank you, Steve. Thank you.
No drummer is the number One or three..
Music aint sport or medals..

Lars eadman Exactly it's art not athletics.
When i scroled down to the comments i was ecpecting to see "what a legend I wish i was as good as that" or something of that type and it was so refreshing to see a coment not praising him thx
Out-fu**ing-standing!!! No form of art and expression should ever be a comparison!
completely agree, I don't know why people are obsessed with the concept of "THE BEST DRUMMER"
Great comment! I agree totally!
Awesome video,awesome drum-solo,awesome sound-quality..thanx
So good! The build up from a simple groove to a full on solo fill is fantastic. Groove, baby, groove!
Mr. Steve Gadd! This man will always be one of top favorite drummers . Love this clip.
Steve Gadd's greatest talent may be that he makes odd meters and tempo changes sound natural and vibrant.
I agree
indeed
No such thing as “The Best” or “Number One” … but he’s right up there with the best of the best.
Ohhh, I needed that!!
Thank you for posting!
WOW! Magnificent! Magnificent time, feel, dynamic, musicality, phrasing, ideas... just wonderfull!!!
This is undoubtedly among the best sounding kits I've ever heard!
Steve Gadd kicks ass
Cillian Finn apparently you haven't heard many Kit's then.
Cillian Finn
It's not the kit, it's Gadd!
Yamahas are the best drums out there imo.
Sounds pretty average to me
he was even kind enough to count the guys back in in case they lost track of the down beat. hahha he's like a clock and doing those reversed and offset rhythms.... I was counting 1 2 3 4 the whole time and it actually added up and I finally got a crash cymbal on the 1 eventually.
halfway through his solo i was thinking "good lord, how will the band know when to come in"....
....oh
There is something so intangible when a great groove is played very well, and mic'd properly.... it's almost like it tickles the taste buds..... I guess thats where "tasty groove" comes from?
made me count... and what a hard count it was around the middle. I though I lost the beat so many times... so impressive
A note for everything, and everything in its place. Gadd’s grooves are legendary.
He is so incredible. Love his drumming.
Chops you can learn, feel is something completely different and Gadd has it in spades!
Wow, everyone in this comments section either was related somehow to or hung out with Steve Gadd once. Like a big family reunion 🤔😂

this man is my idol - can turn that rhythm upside down and inside out and stay totally musical and in the pocket - beautiful!
Awesome! Puts a smile on my face for sure....
I don’t think you can claim any one single guy is “The Best Drummer/Percussionist EVER”, but you can certainly have a favourite and Steve Gadd is MY all-time Fav!
Indeed, an outstanding drummer. It is very hard to tell who is the best. In my understanding (just a listener, not a musician) there are many outstanding drummers! With different techniques, interacting with other musicians. Won’t say any other name (s) because the list is not short. Not immense also.
He may not be the fastest player in the world, but he has forgotten more about playing than most of us will ever know. World class innovative grooves. Steve Gadd is truly a master.
So smooth and precise.
Gadd damn I love his drumming. My favorite!!!
At this level all drummers are equally good, main difference would be the style of music preferred by the particular taste of the listener. There are great drummers in all the musical spectrum, it is pointless to state who's the fastest, strongest, the best...those are just labels, adjectives without meaning. Any musician regardless the instrument, style or technics, will be successful as long as people like what is brought through those fingers, hands or lips. Music this good is more to be enjoyed rather than analyzed.
Gadd has an underlying groove during everything he does including fills and soloing that some drummers don't make feel nearly as good.
Larry Tate That's not fair, you're talking about Gadd Almighty :)
+Larry Tate
Some, maybe, but most jazz oriented drummers make it feel much better than what this heavy footed guy does. Of course, that's my opinion, as opposed to yours ;)
+Sven Ekeberg You and I are the only 2 people here that don't have shit for brains.
Sven Ekeberg You could find great drummers equally talented in every musical genre. You'll be amazed listening to Opeth, Gojira, Mastodon extreme dark stuuf, go an serve your self
Steve Gadd is fantastic! My favourite is Neil Peart but there are many awesome drummers. They're all geniuses and it just boils down to which one speaks to you the most,i reckon.
My favourite is a little known Cuban Drummer named Enilda Rasua.
Check him out on UA-cam.
He plays with 2 sticks each hand, congas and cowbell at the same time and as if that wasn't enough Marimba!
Some here may even remember Elvin Jones

Stunning and an inspiration! One of the top players on the planet!
There are so many incredible drummers out there. All with different styles. There is no such thing as THE BEST!!!! I love to watch and learn from as many of them as I can.
I absolutely agree. Drumming isn't a sport where mathematical statistics can be compiled. At the top end of the spectrum issues of power, meter, musicality etc. are tools these drummers incorporate into a unique style . Dave Brubeck said that one day Joe Morello and Buddy Rich had a "drum battle" that lasted all day, and I'm sure they both came away from that learning a lot from each other . I always thought Joe excelled in musicality where Buddy exceeded in raw power. Steve Gadd has a beautiful approach to drums...he's never a showoff, and only steps into the spotlight when it will benefit the music. I suspect any of the drummers at their level could imitate the others in a way that would be difficult to detect a blind listening test ---if they wanted to, but instead they take those tools and apply them to a style that's unique to who they are as human beings, the essence of all art.
Steve is the father of modern drumming. A game changer. He created a new sound, a new vocabulary, a whole new way of playing. Perhaps the most influential drummer after Tony Williams (oddly enough they were born in the same year). Without Gadd, Colaiuta and Weckl would sound radically different - actually we all would.
Very good point!
Exactly! What you said cannot be overstated. He was a total game changer.
There can’t be the greatest drummer of all time. It’s all about taste!
ALWAYS one of my FAVORITE drummers!👍🏽😁👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Mind blowing touch, taste and creatvity.
I started learning to play guitar as a young teenager. I’ve been playing off and on for half a century. A few decades ago I wanted to learn more about drumming just because I love music. When I was ‘messing’ around (sorry but I was pretty messy to start) on drums I bought a video training tape with Mr. Gadd! He totally blew me away. His drumming and drum rudiments and drum solos just on their own merit sounded like music to me. It was strange to encounter because I thought a drummer was there to keep the beat for the rest of the group. That is still true but this guy seemed to have something different. Now remember I’m not really a drummer so maybe I’m way off base…. No insults to any musicians.
Playing musically is a great struggle for many developing drummers so you aren't too off base. It's not so much as keeping time for the band as it is supporting them, which I think is the main difference between and amateur and professional drunmer
Steve Gadd truly is a master at his craft. Absolutely mind blowing. It's just a shame that Richard Tee can't be here to play with him anymore. They were a match made in heaven. Hats off to you Steve for carrying the torch of true beauty.
That was fun to watch. I have never heard of him until now.
Just listening to this with a big daft grin on my face, mesmerisingly beautiful and always tasteful.
the audience loves that cowbell!
So damn disciplined, solid and dynamic..........
Amazing feel. Love this!
This Nan's grooves are beautiful and he plays SO musically yes he's brilliant!
I agree totally! Although Steve is a legendary drummer in a category of his own. No drummer is the best regardless of his talent or abilities! From my perspective there's just to many amazing musicians/ drummer s out there to put one above the rest. For me it's pure inspiration as well as appreciation for their amazing talents!
All these bashers are missing out on a little virtue called "subtlety." Too bad, because Gadd's technique is full of beautiful subtle touches, such as those he exhibits here. Let's just pity the ignorant, and revel in the joy that is Steve Gadd.
AMEN!!! too much flash these days, not enough groove in the pocket
Jas Bataille i agree... nobody is the number one (put your text here) in the world...

All I know is the solos on Aja are the best in my heart ever!
Steve Gadd is a Drum Beast
He's still got it! Wow! Very musical.

He may always do the same shit when he solos, but damn is it groovy and tasteful.

What he plays is fcking amazing, no matter if hes the best or not :) So joyful and soundful and funky and fucky fuck yeah
This is why he gets paid and is the busiest studio drummer. He has been steadily working for over 40 years.
you gotta be doing something right to be busy for 40 years
The expressiveness and artistry sets him apart...

Perhaps but no one can groove like gadd. In that regard he is #1.
may be the best groove I've ever heard, pocket is INSANE, flow like butter. By far my favorite drummer
Had the pleasure of listening to Steve my whole life. He went to my high school in Rochester. NY I also had Chuck and Gap Mangione sometimes teach my music theory class. So many good players came out of that school. Steve plays exactly what’s needed for the intended music. That’s why he was so successful. Clapton. Paul Simon , you name it used him.
Well he was number one back when this video was made and he still isn't but he is awesome. I just think whoever say's Gadd is number one has never gone to see Dave Weckl perform.
Dave Weckl in my opinion is superior, more smoother & fluidity in his technicality.
1.20 onwards very nice all the classic Gadd signature tricks. Lots of nice space feel timing his thing.
Naa. I checked out Greb obviously he's a talent but I'm left cold watching. Don't enjoy to watch or listen to that style of playing. Dennis just has the magic of charisma, blinding speed, incredible groove, power, chews gum, attitude, better kit sound, and so on. No contest for me.
wake up! you have seen the Mona Lisa thousands of times.....any less the masterpiece the next time you see her....
No. Plus I think it's over rated.
Morgan Agren - Done.
Chambers impressed me a great deal when I first heard him in 92', but now his stuff sounds sloppy/loose to me.
He's amazing and is a living legend.
This solo gives me chills!
who's the band that he's playing with and what song if possible
Going by the comments, I can see most people can see this guy is genius. As where a few just don't hear the subtleties in his technique and approach. So, expressive, and it is a shame some can't feel that.
+spookybaba
Can you accept the fact that personal taste differs between individuals?
For you, he's a genius. For me he's rather static and boring, as a drummer (although a nice guy). I guess the opposite holds for my favorite musicians.
+Sven Ekeberg You misquote me, Son. I stated most people can see he is a genius. To me, he is a fantastic player. I don't personally see him as a genius, though can appreciate why people would coin him so. You are correct in stating personal taste. However, if you are somewhat bored by a musician of Steve Gadd's calibre, whatever your personal tastes are, then you are surely missing something. Personally, my favourites are Tony Williams, and Vinnie Colaiuta. The ability to suffer boredom shows a lacking in one's mental creativity. Anyway, would you care to share a few names of your favourite drummers? I'm genuinely intrigued.
+Sven Ekeberg I'm with you. The fills and beats from 40 years ago. Talk about settling for 1 thing.
Christopher Leiton
Thank you! I see what you are aiming at :)
But 40 years ago is really rather recent, don't you think? Lots of drummers over the world sounded much more dynamic, responsive, exciting and interesting at that time, be it jazz/latin, pop/funk, etc. We are talking 1976 after all.
(Many of the basic beats and patterns Gadd uses actually existed 100 years ago, literally, in military marches, early jazz and in ethnic (folk) music, although not always in the USA. The sound of the instruments was different though, of course.)
+Sven Ekeberg my issue with Gadd and his followers is that he has a "sacred cow" status. Only he has feel, grove, etc. There are too many artists from his time and prior that do a better job but get less recognition. This video was from the 90s, but during his tenure he always plays the same fills and beats. Some people called that being creative. To me that is like reheated an old meal over and over again and pretending still taste fresh.
What made this Solo so Great is ,that he kept it precisly in Time !
Mind blown ! 🤯 wow thats amazing
