"The Messiah" (1741)
Recitativ Comfort ye, my people & air Ev'ry valley
Recitative (Isaiah 40:1-3)
Comfort ye, comfort ye my people,
saith your God. Speak ye comfortably
to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her
warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity
is pardoned. The voice of him that crieth
in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of
the Lord, make straight in the desert a
highway for our God.
Consolad, consolad a mi pueblo,
dice vuestro Dios. Hablad al corazón
de Jerusalén, y gritadle que ha
concluido su lucha y su crimen
está perdonado. Una voz grita en
el desierto: Preparad el camino
al Señor, allanad en el desierto una
calzada para nuestro Dios.
Aria (Isaiah 40:4)
Every valley shall be exalted, and every
mountain and hill made low: the crooked
straight, and the rough places plain:
Que los valles se alcen, que montes
y colinas se bajen, que lo torcido se
enderece y lo rugoso se aplane.
Wow! Who knew Woody Harrelson was a lyric tenor! Fantastique!
I always come back to this version. Incredible soloist.
This dude blows the roof off!
that is so cool, the conductor is playing the harpsichord and playing at the same time...
Indeed!
I heard him in Cosi and as Belmonte. He is one of the best and most thrilling tenors I have ever heard. His Belmonte was just fabulous. The best Mozart tenor I have ever heard.
See below the link to the wole performance that i could get yesterday. Best regards.

Amen!!!
Best Comfort ye I have ever heard.
Secure, powerful and convincing. Fine accompaniment too.
Draws you straight into the narrative. A great communicator of the text as well as being in complete control of his voice. Truly impressive.
What tonal quality and power. He is able sing with flourish. Dynamics are superb. Especially when he sings rough places plain the second time 4.17 to 4.24. Sounds as though the rough places are plained and smoothened vocally. Brilliant!!! Praise God for his talent.
Great comment although the 'Invisible man in the Sky' doesn't exist.
I appreciate Jacob's musical notices here -- highly appropriate to call attention to those. "Invisible man in the Sky" is a needlessly pejorative description of the object of historical faith of millions (Jews, Christians, others). This comment also manifests stark hubris, which I suppose is fine if you're intent on a posture of a-theism. Agnosticism is an intellectually superior posture, and I'd say there's at least some agnosticism in most of us -- even believers like me.

Absolutely splendid! And I love that you can see in the facial expressions of the soloist that he is bringing good news.
And although originally directed toward Jerusalem, I find comfort myself in a gracious God, Who is willing to pardon my iniquity and Who even makes the crooked in my life straight, and the rough places plain, for Him to walk gloriously in my life.
Well said!
+Marieke van Zadelhoff Amen
God bless you Marieke for praising our wonderful God. His grace and mercy are beyond our understanding.
While I enjoy hearing Handel's Messiah year after year, I gain even greater inspiration from reading the text from which the libretto is derived, namely, the Holy Bible. In this passage, for example, read Isaiah Chapter 40 from verse 1 and beyond to see where Handel was inspired by our great creator God to sing praises to His glorious name. Our messiah, indeed, is none other than Jesus Christ Himself!
mister kurt streit is phenomenal..
+Christian Kotsis Absolutely marvelous!
he is dramatically and technically absolutely astonishing
He's truly wonderful.
I am a long time Messiah lover. I am never impressed by technically correct but dispassionate performances. This. Was. Marvelous.
the best of the best

What an outstanding renewal of an old war horse. Well sung and the singer enjoyed it, too Kudos!

Absolutely exquisite!!! Thank you for posting!!
Sounds phenomenal. 🙌🏾
colorful voice
Kurt Streit is always marvellous. If some criticisms would be made, maybe it would be about the "monumental" approach he decided to follow this time in the arioso, while he is much softer and lighter in the aria.
Amazing!
Gorgeous. Gave me chills hearing this.
I'm surprised every time I see it.
I've never seen anyone sing this song so effortlessly. His lung capacity is incredible.
Sehr schön, danke...👍👏🌻❤️
Bravo! Sir Streit sang those rough places plain!!!
Thrilling!!
My God! Is it really possible? Marvellous.
DIVINE!!!!🎶👍
Melhor versao!
I both love it and hate it when I hear a piece I love so much performed so well that all other recordings of it seem to be lacking something. What an amazing performance.
Higher music brought me here

I wish I had that brightness to my tone
bright, but not thin - wow
Sing it baby! And as far as I'm concerned go ahead and throw in as many of those extra trills and embellishments as you want. You own it. CVD

Isaiah 40:1 - 4
1. Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.
2. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD's hand double for all her sins.
3. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
To God Alone Be All The Glory. Hallelujah. Oh Come LORD Jesus. AMEN.
Big man and great body, teeny tiny voice though even though it carried. It was pretty in a Bach cantata Germanic pale way.
There is a cut in the middle of this.
Come for tea..

I enjoyed the performance but I'm a bit puzzled as to why singers take so many liberties with baroque music like Messiah. To my knowledge opera singers don't take that kind of license with Verdi, at least not to the same degree.
You can get away with a lot of ornamentation in Handel, as it was the style of the time. You cannot do so with Verdi.
To embellish Handel in this way is to heap praises upon our glorious creator God who gave the composer his inspiration to create this masterful work of art. When praising God, there can never be enough liberty taken in an effort to declare how great He is and how we depend on Him for our very existence. God inhabits the praises of His people and we can never praise him too much. Glory to His wonderful name!
Oh my, Heavens! (Most HELLISH!)
