  • The wind died down enough to get the drone up and check out what is going on in OBX Rodanthe.
I lost a drone yesterday in all the wind. I'll be able to retrieve it when it clears up a bit.

Home sweet home. How blessed I am my parents grind so hard to etch out a living here. Born and raised on the outer banks and wouldn’t change a thing.

My grandfather almost bought alot of the outer banks. His friend Stanley bought some acres and had the airport. I always wondered what it would have been like if I grew up there. Back in the 60s it was 2$ per acre.

Thank you Altitude 12 for your tremendous overview of the villages, highway 12. It is so enlightening to see what is going on for ourselves. I have and my families have some long history on Cape Hatteras. I wish my great grandparents could have seen this spectacular view. Thanks again for your great work❗️

So crazy. It's mother nature doing her thing. But the obvious holds such a special place in my wife and myself heart. She has so many memories as a little girl growing up on the beach see the light house every morning going to school in Buxton.

The sand dunes at the outer banks are HUGE. Rented a house last year and the only view of the ocean was from the 3rd floor. All other floors were blocked by a dune.

Looks like a natural path for ocean overflow. Not sure why these houses are in the overflow path.

There is no dune system there, they replenish constantly, but, they can’t establish a dependable barrier. It’s also very very narrow between sound and sea right thru that spot. Ocean comes right over the road with little to no impediments.

When they built these houses there was a lot more beach back then. I am guessing the houses were built behind the dunes. They have had to move several lighthouses as well because the shoreline is shrinking.

I love this area with all my heart, makes me sad that this beautiful sandbar is under relentless assault from the elements. That northern side of Rodanthe has always been way to close to the sea, one by one the homes have fallen into the sea, only one lucky house was moved to a safer location that looks less secure with every storm. 💕

    • @Altitude12

@@paulb9376 FWIW they were built as rentals and probably well recouped the cost. But taking risks is a part of life. People build houses in Los Angeles which lies right on the fault and where the ground will liquefy during a big one. Not to mention Seattle, which is positioned even more precariously. Yet millions of people live there...

Mother nature is something. Hopefully the peoele there will have enough sense this time to rebuild further away from the ocean where they will be safe and their homes will be safe. Common sense is all it takes.

    • @Altitude12

Most of these homes were built when the beach was 200/300 yards away. The natural tendency of a barrier island is to shift however it wants. No way of predicting where it might change.

Meanwhile in Wildwood NJ people be like "dang the beach just keeps getting bigger every year....such a pain to walk that far to the water" Funny thing is a trailer park with cheap movable places to live would make the most sense on a barrier island with errosion and hurricanes but they are considered too low class to have there so people build their mansions and try to fight off mother nature.

From Oregon Inlet south, this is one of the most desolate and God-forsaken areas in America. Movies and drones would have you believe how beautiful and relaxing it is. It ain't. Mosquitoes keep you indoors unless it's blowing like hell...relentless storms...corrosion is an onslaught...grocery shopping extremely difficult. Lived in Avon for years and never again. Hate the place.

  • @anthonylee6322

Only in America do we not take the bull by the horns and do beach replenishment correctly. The so call naturalist say " oh no you can't move that sand. It'll hurt the eco system ". Well doesn't the storms change the bottom and displace shell fish etc. Ahh yes it does. In Holland they don't play they replace the lost land not in small amounts. But in leaps and bounds. 5 years ago I met and spoke with the company studying the sand for replenishment these. They told me that they could get the proper type of sand only 200 yards from shore
. But the powers to be made them go 1/2 mile off shore at a lot great cost. Here at the S turn they need to make the beach 150' wider not 50' . Also that temp bridge was a waste of $$$$$. They could have closed the breach and saved time and $$$$. The ocean did it naturally. I think the ecologist or some one just doesn't want you to enjoy the beach. The same with those birds. They are all over inland Maryland and along ocean city Maryland. This non sense has to be stopped. And common sense needs to be used.
