I received my pair of Elacs at around the same time you released this video. So in the past year or so, I can say that the accuracy of your analysis is really spot on. While I can't articulate my impressions of these speakers as well as you, I trust my ears to form my judgement and that judgement is very, very positive.

Thanks for another successful review. I watched all your videos, as I'm in the market for bookshelves, including this, featured Elac's.
How would you compare them to over-glorified (in a good way) CSS Craiton Td1-x? They are on my radar too.
Don't worry about the bass, as I use dual subwoofers. If you had to choose one of the two....? Just overall sound quality. Please & thank you. Happy listening

listening A/B vs Quad S2 i'd say these ones are warmer- less microdetailed and a bit more laid back. Can't comment on soundstage. I'd say voices are thicker also on the ELacs. Some might prefer- myself i'm sticking with my QS2 :).

Hi Tharbamar, thank you for reviewing these speakers. I have Evo 4.2's and they sound great but for my tastes, they have a distinct lack of mid-bass 'punch' and the bass apears to be a little slow sounding when listening to high tempo music. I'm aware a sub may be required for the lower bass regions but can you tell me if the UniFi Reference has good mid-bass punch and how they sound with uptempo, Hip Hop & Rock music?
    Keep up the great work.

    • @Tharbamar
      @Tharbamar  3 роки тому +9

Hi, yes I agree, as much as I love overall musicality of Evo 4.2 they are not the best option for high energy music.
I’m not much of Hiphop person but I love how they sounded with Tupac, Ice Cube etc., also I went through my AC/DC collection and many hard rock music with UBR62 because I can’t stop listening to them, bass is punchy and fast with well controlled sound, UBR62 is like an agile European sports car, it can take every twist and turns without losing control with nice power to weight ratio, that’s how I would put them in car analogy. @Gareth Brownlee: if you want fast, detailed bass (if a little light), you’ll want a sealed box speaker. ATCs have the fastest, most detailed bass I’ve heard in monitor speakers. Another interesting video.
I really can't decide which speaker to get. I have been following all your videos for quite a while but I don't have a chance to test the speakers in my system before buying them. I was inclined to LINTON, then the LS50 META and these ELACs are also interesting. I would like a speaker with a beautiful scene, transparent and detailed, with articulated and not exuberant bass. The medium and medium-high frequencies must be thick, fleshy, and never light and veiled. An excellent presence and dynamics. I have great indecision but the budget would be around $ 1500. The room is not large, 3m x 4m, I listen from the short side at a distance of about 2.5m.

Is there a better speaker for about 2-3 times the price that still is suitable for placement near the wall? And without losing the benefits like low volume sound quality, balanced accurate sound?
In Germany I get a pair of these for below 900 EUR by the way, but willing to pay up to 2100 EUR. Speakers from KEF or Buchardt are out to my understanding as they must be placed at a distance from the wall, which I cannot do in my room.

The Kef R3 may be slightly more neutral and have deeper bass, but they actually have less clarity than the UBR62's. I wasn't very impressed when I heard them. In fact, the only Kef's I've liked are the Reference 1's, including Blade and Muon. And the LS50's are way overrated. The Reference 1's are excellent, but also not very efficient like the UBR62's.

Compared the Elac Unifi 2.0 to the Unifi Reference and Carina.
Speakers rear is about 5feet away from back wall. And about 6 feet apart. Some toeing in.
With the REL T7X reinforcing the bass region.
I have the Unifi 2.0 first.
It’s neutral n smooth. I like the Unifi highs. Airy, precise n articulate. Vocal is pin point. Bass is deep n tuneful. Separation n depth is really good.
    Then the Carina.
This is much beefier then the 2.0.
Throws a much wider soundstage n image. Tonally the carina is warmer n richer. Vocal is full bodied has that life-like tone.
    Bass is solid and weighty.
The carina is way better than the 2.0 in terms of tonal quality. Making the 2.0 sound leaner n pale and restraint.
However when the 2.0 is paired with the T7X. This combo is great.
I have great expectation for the Unifi Reference as the 2.0 is already very good.
The Unifi reference as expected. Produce a wider soundstage, bigger image. Weighty vocals.
It’s less laid back then the 2.0.
However I felt the Reference just did not produce depth well enough.
Highs notes n details don’t extends as I hope. It lacks air of the 2.0.
The champion among these 3 Elac.
To me is the Carina, 2.0, Reference.
If u pair the 2.0 with a good Sub like the T7X. It’s awesome.
The carina with the T7X simply win in-terms of tonality n scale n separation.
The Unifi Reference with the T7X.
Is below the Carina/T7X as it just unable to render the depth n tonal quality.
I am truly surprised by the smaller Carina Bass.
Amplifier used are Perreaux R200i, Simaudio Moon 340i.
Cables QED Revelation Signature, QED Supremus and Nordorst Heimdal.

I was thinking of buying the Kef R3's about 2 years ago. I heard them in a decently set up room in an audio store and I wasn't impressed.
In my room, and with Anthem room correction, I like these UBR62's more.
I really liked my Bryston Mini T's but they sounded too bright in my current room because they aren't as balanced.
The next step up from the UBR62's for me that equal them in balanced sound and beat them in soundstage, clarity, etc, are Kef Reference 1's.
And ironically the Kef Reference 1's are the only Kef speakers I've ever liked, including Blade and Muon.

Owning them, I have to say a small amount of fine tuning and break-in is necessary. As he said, playing louder is different. You need just the right equipment an particular setting. 11:00 is of especial interest to me - based on this (and some other) reviews, I'm going to run these as desktop speakers (admittedly, on a rather oversized desk), paired with a little Cambridge Audio AXA35.
I'm hoping the clarity and some punchiness will come through at lower levels as well. I really don't need it to be good at high volume, or provide earth-shattering levels of bass. The Diamonds were getting very boomy down there even at moderate listening levels, so I thought what the heck, after all the rave reviews I might as well give it a shot and see if I can tell the difference.
My copy is on the way and should arrive in a couple of days. If you don't mind, I would like to amend my comment later on with my findings.

Interesting! I have the Debut B6 and the B6.2. these resemble the latter more with a fuller less edgy top end and better mids. The bass? Not that different! To me the looser, warmer, deeper bass of the B6 is more fun. You don't really need a sub with those. As Jones tightens up that bass, yes it's more neutral, but less engaging and authoritative! I've never been a fan of audiophile bass! Live music has room effects that make it less tight and neutral! It is not that. Audiophile bass to me is bass produced in an anechoic chamber. artificial. If only Jones could retain the B6 bass and add these mids and highs, that would be wonderful!

I dunno. The Bass sounded boomy and everything higher terribly edgy. It's the only time I can recall that I've had to turn the volume down so I can bear to listen. Like someone else said, I'm very happy with my Quad S2's which sound far more balanced and generally pleasing to my ears (BTW, thanks for introducing me to them, Tharbamar).
