Pet Loss Support : Goodbye to My Famous Ferret Moose Who Went Viral!

- (Please read all) I wanted to provide you all with some pet loss support (frankly for all kinds of pets, and for all kinds of loss) in some words I wrote to honor my ferret Moose who passed earlier in 2022. Though I make a point to keep my channel apart from my personal life, I will say that these last two years have been an absolute whirlwind with the end of a 7 year relationship in January of 2021 and the unexpected loss of my mother in January of 2022, and then Moose right after.
Why am I sharing this background info on The Modern Ferret? In the hopes that my words might help one of you! Grief is a universal phenomenon.
I am grateful for the experiences God has given me, for a deepened sense of empathy for others, and the undeniable strengthening of my faith in Jesus Christ as a result.
I am posting this video on the one-year anniversary of my mother's passing to honor her.

Moose was such a special little guy! Ferrets are angels, everything you said in this video was so beautifully said. You both inspired so many people to fall in love with ferrets and that’s something that’ll live on forever!❤
My 8.5 year old sweet girl died yesterday 😢. We buried her in our back yard. I have tons of stories of her, she went through an entire front loader wash 😢, got out side, lost in a kitchen drawer for two days...so many scary stories along with all the wonderful, fun moments with her. Rest well sweet girl of mine and also precious Moose❤
Damn. This got me. 😭 I lost my first ferret, Graxel, around this time last year. He was my Moose. What a beautiful tribute to your boy. ❤️
Moose was a special ferret, he gave a joy that no other would give. Moose has a special place in our hearts to dook and get into trouble, DIP Moose.
45 year old man. Didn't even make it 50 seconds before the waterworks started. Ferrets are so wonderful. My boys are my best friends. I'm so sorry to hear about Moose. You really did make a great tribute to him though.

My condolences for moose... I had watched many videos of that famous handsome ferret.
I am also a ferret owner, her name is Luna. She is 14 months old and she was given to me as a gift sent from heaven as well.
Plus thank you for teaching how to love and care for an animal that shows unconditional love.
Thank you Moose, you helped so many ferret owners, myself included, and inspired everyone who crossed your path on the internet and in person. You are such a good boy and will always be remembered by many.♥ When I first adopted my 2 girls, Tinker and Belle, I had no idea what to do or how to care for them. I thought maybe I made a mistake, maybe I just wasn't meant to be a ferret mom. Then I found The Modern Ferret. Moose and all your other babies helped me learn to care for my girls. Shortly after, Belle started having these kind of "episodes" as I called them. She would play for a few minutes and then lay flat on the ground, legs out for 15 minutes or so, eventually that turned into an hour. Shortly after, she became very lethargic. I noticed the first signs and started researching and with help from you and other ferret lovers I learned these were most likely early signs of Hypoglycemia Insulinoma. We took her to the vet and turns out I was right. She was put on meds and did good until a few months later she started having seizures. They were silent seizures and didn't hurt her at first. She would shake for a few minutes and after eating, having sugar water, honey, or some other things we learned from the vet, it went away. One day I got home from school to hear screaming, sounded like high pitched as if an animal was injured. I thought it was my cat and searched the house but soon learned it was Belle. We called every vet and nobody would see her, our emergency vet was "out of town". She was having these seizures for about 9 or 10 hours, I was by her side for all of it. Nobody would help her and I felt hopeless. I told her "It's okay to stop fighting, you can let go." and within 30 seconds she passed away in my arms. October 3rd, 2022 my baby grew her wings and passed the rainbow bridge. Tinker became very depressed and inactive, Belle was the only ferret she got along with she hated other animals including ferrets. We tried so hard to find someone who could be with her but she became too aggressive around them. She was a fairly old ferret, probably about 7 if I had to guess. One day I came home to her having what seemed to be a seizure but not quite the same as Belle had, my mom thinks maybe she just went into organ failure, all the research I've done says some sort of infection like covid? We aren't quite sure. She passed away in my arms as well, her death was quick and I hope not very painful. May 20, 2023. My baby passed away in my arms just a few months ago. I miss my girls so much and will never forget the memories I had with them. Playing in the snow, walking through the park, going to the store together. While i only had my babies for a few years, they both made such a huge impact on my life and I will love them forever and always. Dook in peace, Moose, Tinker and Belle. Thank you so much for teaching me everything I know about being a ferret mom and giving my babies such great lives! 💖💞
Moose is the one who convinced me I needed ferrets in my life. I was back and forth between ferrets and rats and his energy and sweetness is what convinced me. Here I am now with two ferrets, Scout and Boo whom I adore and can’t imagine my life without. Dook in peace, sweet Moose.

I just lost my first ferret Ellie last week. She was my Moose ❤ Their lives are so short but so impactful. Moose and your videos helped me answer all my first time ferret questions. Thank you both ❤
This is so incredibly moving. Moose's life was so little and so large. "All we ever hoped was that the world would get a chance to see how incredible you were." And we did. You did that for him, Haley. You made his little life matter. And you spread so much love and joy and awareness so that other ferrets (and people!) will have better lives, too. I had never seen those early videos - so precious. Looking back on those well-loved calendar pictures and classic videos made me nostalgic for the person and place I was, even the ferret I had in the mid and late 20-teens. (My own sort of good old days.) Life changes so quickly, but watching Moose’s life through your eyes and words makes it feel like we all went through part of something together that we can look back on and smile. You gave Moose his immortality here on earth through your work. He will be with you again someday in a real forever. PS - thanks for including my message in your video...all the those messages, and knowing there were many more was the part that brought tears to my eyes.

It’s so heartbreaking losing these beautiful souls. I have ferrets also. I lost my ferret as well not to long ago, Splash! You are right, I said the same thing, they are angels from above that come down and bless us, teach us then they go back. I have a beautiful ferret now Minka my love and life. Your videos about loss always make me feel like the Lord speaking to my soul, he gave me my sweet ferret, Ferryn, after I lost my bunny who was truly my soulmate. Ferryn is almost exactly like your Moose, everyone loves her, she knows exactly who needs her & wont leave them until they’re smiling, she travels with me everywhere & across the country with me for my medical care & people always suggest that I do things like you did with Moose because she’s just so unique. Unfortunately with my health issues that’s not a possibility but I always told people about your channel & that you & Moose we’re out there educating the world. He will be missed but never forgotten. I had 2 little ones, Lila and Purê (Purê means mashed potatoes, for his belly was yellow)
They were the greatest.
Now, 10 years later, I have my family, my 2 kids, and we just got Gohan.
I had to give my kids the joy of living with one of these guys.

I'm constantly astounded how my tiny little ferret, with a brain that can fit between my two fingers, can inspire and change everything. All the thoughts and feelings and motivations that he has, what an incredible product of evolution and intellect. Animals are such a blessing.
I lost my beloved Bandit three weeks ago. He was kind and gentle. He loved his little animal stash he would carefully arrange daily in his "Bandit Lair". He was my best friend.
The bond you had with Moose reminds me so much of mine with Bandit.
I hope we can find a way to heal from the hole left in our hearts from our friends that are gone now. Till we meet again.

I have only very recently stumbled upon your channel and I've loved every one I've seen so far. I lost my girl just before christmas and her sister the year before that. Both had Lymphoma. Moose will always be with you. I have just rehomed 2 more ferrets and the joy they have bought me again is unreal. I think that us ferret peeps will be ferret peeps forever. I can't imagine life without the little fuzz bitts now.

My Rikki crossed the rainbow Bridge on March 21st 2023. I was and still am heart broken. My Rikki was cremated and now home. So sorry you are going through this loss. Hugging you all ❤

i’m sobbing over a ferret i’ve never seen in my life
i just recently started following this person cuz my ferret got so sick and my heart was so broken and i needed answers. they said he needs some scans that is expensive but i am gathering the money slowly. when watching everything her ferret went through is making me question if i can do it too and she touched my heart. i thank her for her videos and teaching me so much about ferrets. bless you and you're angel and thank you for everything

Ok I’m crying. I’m a newer subscriber and though I didn’t know Moose, I know how many lives he impacted immensely. Including me. For a long time I’ve thought of ferrets as just another animal, and never gave it any thought. (and in my small town I’ve never saw one up close especially as a pet). But then I stumbled upon this channel, and saw Moose’s a-d-o-r-a-b-l-e face. And let’s just say I instantly fell in love. I watched quite a few videos, and the more I watched.. the more I began to see another side to ferrets. One that I never even knew existed. I know this is getting long (and you most likely won’t see this), but just know Moose will always remain in our hearts. I have 4 cats, and most of the videos really did surprise me! I see so many resemblance from my cats to ferrets in general (which lets just say I never expected). But the bottom line is I’m so sorry for your loss, and somewhere up there… He’s running around, and being the angel he’s always been. 🐾🕊️

This was absolutely beautiful and so true, I often wounder why my first Gemma was only here with us for less than a year, it breaks my heart to this day because I miss her and love her so much. Then you mentioned the part about angles and I was like wow I have six now. She has changed our lives and really opened our hearts , truly a blessing from god....I miss you Gemma 😔 ❤️
Evry life and encounter has a meaning. Moose was there to help you teach people about a unique side to him. All the people he met, all the people that held him will always remember him, RIP Moose, my condolences to you and your family for losing a loved one, he will always live in your hearts.

I too just lost my love Ferret. It’s been a week and a half and it was an unfortunate accident that took her life and I can only say that I am beyond devastated but also feel honored to have ever received her love. She was pure joy in our lives And at times I struggle to believe things will ever feel as good as they did when she was here. I watched a bunch of emotional videos on how to grieve with your other pets the loss that you all feel. In doing so I’ve come across a few videos that said that she chose how she would leave this world and she would always be right around us in order to help us past the pain. That she will forever be an angel on our shoulder. I hope with all of my heart that is the truth because this pain is so heavy that I don’t know how some days I will ever make my way to the other side of it without her help. So I very much understand and feel for your loss. Animals are the purest souls and I just thank God that I was given such a beautiful soul to share this life with. It was worth every ounce of pain that we are going through. God bless you and God bless moose may he always be an angel on your shoulder.

Hello, I know what it feels like to lose a life partner. I lost my ferret three weeks ago. He died of cancer when he was 5 years old. I'm super sad, I feel like I'm missing a piece of my heart, I don't know how to live without it. I can't imagine that I won't play with him again. I'm so sorry about Moose.

Aww man, now I'm crying. When my partner and I were considering what pet to get after our hamster had passed away, we had a few options. No dogs or cats in our apartment, but anything "caged" was fine. We wanted a longer lifespan, because two years is just far too short. We went with ferrets (who are now free roam), primarily because my partner had had some as a kid, and when looking around I saw some of your videos, and they helped me a lot with understanding what ferrets are and what makes them tick. I've had a lot of different pets, dogs, cats, guinea pigs and rabbits, my partner and I's last pet before ferrets was a hamster who passed away.
None of those animals are anything close to ferrets! They're so wild and unique, not just as a species, but each ferret really has its own personality, far more than I'd expected! They've definitely been a lot of hard work and persistence, lots of tears and fears and vet bills when they've fallen ill, but everyone who has a ferret in their life is truly blessed. Everyone who has met my ferrets has fallen in love, there's even a local community that organizes group ferret walks! My fears just melt away when I look at those little ears and tiny paws. Their dooks heal my heart. And this channel played a large role in helping me keep them well and safe, and understanding them better.

I promised each of mine that I would love them with all my heart forever, that promise will never be broken.

DIP moose!! This video made me cry it was really touching.I too just recently lost my baby boy Zazu due to an infection in his small intestine.I just got him late august and even though I only got to share my life with him for a few months it was the best months I ever had and I’m glad I got to have him in my life.We got treatment for his infection but I think I was too late.His last days/moments were filled with love and snuggles till his very last breath.Before I got my ferrets I would binge watch all your videos to gather as much information as possible,your ferret moose was a very special guy DIP
So sorry for your loss he was amazing.. I lost my tiny little girl Atticus in August 2022 at the age of 7. She spent the first year 1/2 of her life in a cage before I was blessed with her. I am so happy I was able to allow her to live her best life. She was so gentle and calming much like your moose. She could also be a ball of energy. Joy in a 1 pound pachage. I miss her this video is comforting to me thank you for sharing. 😍
