- Mink are amazing and beautiful little weasels. They are in many was very similar to their cousins the otters. Though they are similar in size and appearance to ferrets, they are a very different creature. In recent years they have gained popularity as pets. But do mink make good pets? Joseph Carter The Mink Man ( / josephdcarter ) has come by with his incredible mink Boon to help us decide if the mink is the best pet mammal for you.

:) hi
Never been more excited for a crossover
I have been hoping to see this video coming for a wile now. I was never sure if it was going to happen, but I am glad it did.
Mink on the table: "I tired"
Mink any other time: *unlimited powah*
Pros to a mink: super cute
Cons: everything else
That is what I got from this video
Good take
@LaumiRez I had house bunnies for about 20 years, but switched to pet ratties after--they make a thousand times better pet than a rabbit :) A lot of cons with bunnies can go away if you have a bonded pair--much less destructive, about the same cost to feed, don't need more space than one.
Accurit.
@LaumiRez Same but Guinea pigs and hamsters

After watching The Mink Man for years he’s made it quite clear. Mink are awesome and cute as hell but probably best left to the right person who can provide them the correct environment.
they are super cool!.... from afar!
It’s a weird experience watching Boon take a nap, and being rather chill, after watching the videos on Joseph’s channel when Boon was killing vermin with rapid intent.
Right! So used to seeing them in hunting mode and all amped up in Joseph's vids, and here he is just chillin. Deceptively cute animals.
Yea I like to see this side of one of the monks..
it looked dead throughout half the video
@@neo-filthyfrank1347 Just head over to the Mink Man's channel and see how, usually, he's the one making other things very dead, very quickly. Cause this is actually not just a pet, but a working mink, used to exterminate vermin.

They're like snakes, but instead of feeding them whole prey every couple of weeks, you get to feed them it several times a day :D.
You should totally cover hermit crabs. They are seriously mistreated from the lack of information petstores give. I'd love for someone to actually do a video on the proper care.
They also should not be purchased, every single hermit crab is wild caught, they’ve never been successfully bred in captivity. Hermit crabs are going extinct because of tourist and pet shops collecting hundreds of them
Definitely only rescue them, there’s so many for rescue because of how difficult they are to care for
Hermit crabs are probably one of the worst crustaceans you could own. They are always wild caught and nearly impossible to keep properly in captivity. Vampire crabs are probably a better option
Right! Surprised he hasn't covered those as they are in every pet store.
Agreed!!! Crab Central Station does an amazing job but I’d also like Clint to cover them 🦀🐚♥️
There are really disturbing videos of the pre-petstore condition hermit crabs are kept in.

I had a mink for a while. I rescued it from a mink farm I worked at. It was a runt and wouldn't have made it, so I took it home and bottle fed it myself.
He was a little stinker but cute as could be with me. He loved antagonizing the cat though. He take all the cats toys put them in a pile and try and beat the cat and messing with him. He would also go in the cat's litter box and taunt the cat from there.
Edit: I should add that I never let the Mink and Cat interact without my CLOSE supervision.
Can you upload videos of him with the cat lol
I too demand video of this.
What a little badass! 😂🎉
Was he nippy like ferrets are? Ferrets can bite quite hard...i can't imagine what a hard mink bite would feel like!
I know what he means what he's saying with how complicated they are to raise, but I just love the fact that he's saying they're little monsters, they require all this time, all this stuff..... and the mink is just laying practically motionless on the table, not moving XD

I used to work with a refuse truck, and a mink farm was one of the places we stopped. I hated that place. The animals all lived in super tiny cages, waiting to die, whitout being able to move or socialize. Speaking of other things though, happy to see a variety of animals covered.
My exotic animal vet has told me that the “exclusivity” tendency is a common trait in the exotic mammals we try to keep as pets& I’m so glad you guys covered it today! At 5 years old, our pet coati decided that I was his one & only, even though my husband helped me bottle-feed and raise him as a rescued kit from 4 weeks old. You seriously never know what goes on in those little brains! It is not all out dangerous in my house but I definitely kennel my little guy if anyone comes over. @@kimlightfoot i think you need to consult shawn woods for effective trap... ua-cam.com/channels/Ybru-MPO1xjes4FVn61JUQ.html
@@scrubjay93 Honestly the vet bills are not that high compared to a cat or dog. If you have 200 euros set aside you are usally good to cover any emergency. However I agree, finding a good vet is a pain, mostly because they say they have experience when they actually don't and only show there ignorance when you are there with the animal. Like if I ask, can you treat my blue-tongued skink, they are at least honest and say, no we know nothing about them.
@@kimlightfoot Appearantly mouse are supposed to be afraid of rats, and be hunted by them on occasion. However I had one incident with a mouse in the house attracted by the pellets I fed my pet rats. It walked straight up to the rat cage and I was like "Well he's a goner." But my male rats didn't bat an eye an just let him steal their food and run away XD I ended up collecting some cat fur from my friends cat and plugging the mouse hole with that. Never saw the mouse again.
I’m a HUGE fan of The Mink man. He’s got an amazing way of training them and they’re so damn cute. He’s training “Raptor”, a monitor lizard to hunt also. He’s a really cool guy (& so is The Mink man🤣)
I love ferrets. They were one of my dream animals and having owned a pair was everything I ever wanted and more. HOWEVER due to breeding restrictions in the USA almost every individual comes from a breeding mill. Both of my bbs (who were not siblings) developed fatal cancer (one had bone cancer and one had liver cancer). Not only was it expensive and futile treatment, none of the medications worked, and watching the happiness and mischief fade into near constant pain was one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life. They both died young, with the eldest having only lived for 5 years. For this reason alone I do not recommend them as pets in the United States unless you choose to import from a reputable international breeder. Save yourself the heartbreak because you will fall irrevocably in love with the little guys 😢
My rat vet told me the same about ferrets--such horrible health issues (baked in!) that they will break your heart. Considering she was comparing to my little ratties (rats have loads of health problems), I came to the same conclusion as you. Surely we can someday get those restrictions lifted so people can breed healthy lines of ferrets. In Europe there are many excellent hobby breeders, even angora ferrets!
@@scrubjay93 Honestly! If indiscriminate release is such a worry (even though the US currently has no invasive ferret colonies) they should implement the same system they use with reptiles-- chip and permits! I'd rather jump through whatever hoops Fish & Wildlife impose on me than keep supporting the unhealthy breeder mill industry. Also Angora ferrets are definitely a new dream pet of mine ❤️❤️
Most cancers are from a lack of vitamin c and perhaps mink have that issue. Next time give your Mink a gram of liposomal vitamin c two or three times a week and I'm sure that he will remain cancer-free.. You cannot use conventional vitamin c because like humans animals that eat meat have a very low pH gut and that instantly destroys conventional vitamin c. Liposomal vitamin c is coated in lecitin which is a harmless greasy substance so that the vitamin c will be delivered directly to the blood before it is destroyed by the gut. Good luck with your love of minks I didn't even know you could get it pet mink. I live in Illinois I'll have to research that. But they sure are super cute
If this is followed by "Pangolin, the best pet mammal?", I think Clint is trying to tell us something

The pangolin thing is a total lie. Part of the coof virus was taken from a pangolin virus, but the coof didn't come from pangolin or bats
We established that almost 8 months ago.
They are one of my dream pets. Too bad they are extremely uncommon even for zoos.

I do wish most ferrets had the Minks stouter head, but they are still amazing animals. Good tempered ferrets are so sweet, chill, loving and social. So fun to play with too.
A cool idea for a future video is to get with SaveAFox and talk about foxes as pets, especially with people trying to domesticate foxes the past decade and them getting closer to being successful.
Belyaev foxes are pretty domesticated, none of the problems that foxes from fur farms or shelters have. Just wish they'd let them become available.

Yes, no shortage of personality.

I found The Mink Man a few years ago when I had a mouse infestation in my house and was desperately searching for a remedy online after I had tried what seemed like everything. Mink were not the solution to my problem, but his videos provided a lot of entertainment later that year when I was in a really rough spot.
I love mustelids, but I will NEVER get one as a pet. They are too high maintenance for me, and an animal like that on my opinion should be left in the wild, because I feel like they would thrive there WAY better than inside.
Generally very true.
That's the thing with non-domesticated animals. You need to be a professional or a hardcore enthusiast to raise them as pets. Just too much compromise for the average Joe.

I had the very unfortunate experience or living with a serval years ago. It was all fun & games until he approached sexual maturity. He still slept & cuddled lovingly with his favorite person, not me. He urinated & defecated on everything of mine. But fortunately was not aggressive toward me. Guests who entered the home on the other hand were not appreciated & sometimes attacked. He could leap from across the room, land on someone’s shoulder and bite their face before anyone even had time to react. It was terrifying. To be clear, this cat was bottle fed & raised around many people & settings. He was confident & well socialized, not fearful of anything. They are unpredictable, extraordinarily agile, WILD carnivores. Other than an even bigger cat, I’d be hard pressed to think of a worse pet!!!

So cool!!!! They live here in Ireland but we rarely get to see them outside captivity. No one believed me in my village when I saw one😅
Keep fighting the good fight. I believe you!
I looked it up out of curiosity: "The American mink was first imported to Great Britain in 1929, though a series of escapes and releases led to the establishment of a self-sufficient feral population in Devon by the late 1950s, and others by the early 1960s. In Ireland, the American mink was not farmed until the early 1950s, thus feral populations established themselves there much later. The species is now widespread in mainland Great Britain and Ireland, though some places remain uncolonised." I bet they love Ireland since they are semi-aquatic. They like the Pacific NW of the USA too.
@@scrubjay93 oh wow I never knew there was farms for them here either. Yeah there's a canal that runs through my town and that's where I saw my first one
But there's a European Mink too which is different
I'd like to know: what's more high-maintenance-a mink or a parrot? (After all, birds are reptiles.)
Its super cool to see you expanding out to mammals. I love your way of explaining things; it really helps me understand these amazing animals so much better, so the more you cover the better.
Thank you so much!
Mink man is cool as hell. How he trained a monitor to hunt rats is badass.
Gorgeous little fur demons
I was gifted a ferret by a pet store I would go to very frequently. He was meant to be a playmate for my other ferret. He ended up being aggressive toward my other ferret so I took him back. He ended up being their educational ferret with kids and he would catch rats and mice that got loose. I was told they’d hear squeaking and they’d find the ferret holding them until they would come and get it. He never hurt them though.
Definitely not the right pet for me, I don't even have the patience to keep a ferret, I can't imagine a mink. I'll stick to the reptiles and amphibians that don't need to be fed daily and are happy alone in their enclosures when I'm not around. Great video though!
I guess I never considered how many different species humans breed/keep for hunting purposes. Now I need to go learn about hunting with mink even though I will likely never need this knowledge.
Smart decisions all around. Check out Joseph's channel, it will teach you everything.
I have trained and hunted with both ferrets and mink keeping them as pets for nearly 20 years. Anyone who has not taken the time to learn every facet about ferret care and psychologu should never attempt to own a mink. If you are not keeping ine as a hunting animal in my opinion should not own a mink. As he said mink pick their owners my last ine chose my daughter. If it was not me or my daughter (6 at the time) he would be very defensive. When he was passing away noone, but her could get near him. He followed and cuddled in her lap up to the point he finally passed away.
My advice to anyone who wants a weasel. Just get a ferret. Do all the research you can on ferrets before hand. I also recommend ferret proofing the house or rooms the ferrets can access and only cage them when you wont be home or when you sleep. If you cannot dedicate 4 to 6 hours a day to them get 2.

Not a good time for a video like this, considering minks are highly-susceptible to the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, and they have been linked to infecting humans, which led to mass culling of mink on farms.
Yes, they are absolutely adorable; however, they are NOT the right choice to pick for a pet during the pandemic.
A pet mink that stays in your home is not a risk for disease transmission.
I hope you do a video on Raptor and his training!

I am wishing for a pet rock for Christmas. Clint can you help sort out if the pet rock is the best pet for me?
Meanwhile, in the EU:
"Oi, there's another one!"
*THUMP THUMP STOMP WHACK*
That is, of course, because American minks don't belong in Europe. They're more vicious than the mustelids that the local prey are used to and so they cause a lot of damage to both the prey populations and to said mustelids' food sources.
Except the wild polecats, whom they breed with instead. This probably means you _could_ hypothetically get a domestic ferret and a reasonably tame mink to breed with some supervision, if you wanted an extra vicious ferret.

Great Video. I am a faithful watcher of the Minkman, and I would never get a mink as a pet. He doesn't recommend them as pets, but from watching him work with his Washushe, I saw just how aggressive these little monsters can be. And, they are not pets, they are wild animals. So to me, that just means leave them wild. Which Joseph doesn't do. But what He does with his mink, is give them an enriching life, he has been steadily building Minkland for the sole purpose of enriching their lives when not out hunting. And that is another think Joseph does with his animals. PEST Control Natures Way. No poisons, no guns, just predators and their prey. Sometimes the prey gets away, sometimes they do not. But then the prey continue with the food chain. And feed his family of predators. Cycle complete. So No, I do not want to own a Mink, not today, not yesterday, and not tomorrow. I hope the rest of the people out there take Joseph's warning to heart, and stays away from mink ownership. They are wild animals, and they are both predator and prey animals. More predator than prey, but still, They keep their favourite foods the muskrats populations down, and will hunt every small animal they find. They are great hunters, and punch above their weight class all of the time. They are solitary animals in the wild, because they are so aggressive, they do not form groups or families, or even bonds of mates. They view other mink as competition and aggressively drive them away
THE CROSSOVER I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED!
I volunteered at a ferret rescue at one point for a few years. A couple who also volunteered there had a 'pet' mink and had her at the shelter one night. I asked if I could interact with her and they said sure, and gave me a pair of welder gloves. I'll just say that she was incredibly playful and the welders gloves reduced her 'play bites' to something approaching tolerable. Cute little fuzzy shark. Seriously, if you want a pet weasel, get a ferret (preferably a couple ferrets).
This video totally made my day! I'm obsessed with mustelids! Possibly the cutest creature you've featured thus far (though, the Gila Monster comes to close. My favorite Lizard!). Personally, I'd LOVE to see a ferret video. With everything going on in the world right now, your videos are always like a light in the darkness. Your enthusiasm is infectious, and always uplifting. Thanks, Clint, for everything.

I was confused for a second, until I realized that no, that's actually an ad for the Ridge Wallet and not a spliced-in "best pet" for some strange rectangular reptile.
Mammal:
"Mammals are smelly and loud."
..allriight.
Minkman and Clint together! Unstoppable force! I love both of you!
Mink man x Clints reptile collab! This was dope! We need a video around Joseph’s project with his Argus monitor
Good idea! Stay tuned 😉
Please do a video about ferrets. Someone was offering ferrets in my area to be rehoused and It would be cool to see the proper tips before
Me, a Dane watching this right now 😬
😅
Booooonnnnn👍👍👍Watching this thinking,That looks like Joseph carters mink boon,And his back yard😂😂😂
Lol im gonna need you to do sugar gliders next or other odd pets and rather or not they actually make good pets
I've read that gliders don't make very good pets but they aren't dangerous and insanely cute :) I'm sure you'll do your research! People also keep flying squirrels as pets; they are equally cute and very similar--not sure how great they are as pets, but another option. www.thesprucepets.com/southern-flying-squirrels-as-pets-1237330
@@scrubjay93 ive seen people keeping them online but not considering them even though they are super cute
There definitely needs to be more information about gliders. So many people get one and assume they are like a hamster.
@@noir2226 yup the pet youtubers that have them ive only seen one or two really go into how challenging they are the rest are just like look its cute! 🤦♀️
@@bansheerosebelle9848 :c Those poor babies. But I believe it, they just recently started to get popular out here and there's people left and right trying to rehome them because theirs wasn't friendly or makes too much noise. Etc, etc. It's sad.
Okay, considering I got bitten *through a shoe* by a ferret, I think I'll give mink a pass xD Fancy/Domesticated rats are adorable (I had maybe a dozen when I was younger), but do expect to get pissed on, shat on, and sometimes bitten xD
