    This video shows how to replace the license plate bulbs on a 2002-2006 Toyota Camry. Most cars are similar; really the major difference is getting the felt covering on the trunk lid off.
    This Toyota uses "Philips Screw" style clips. Hold the outer ring, then stick a Philips Screwdriver in the center, and turn slightly, counterclockwise, then remove the push-pin.
    The child safety release is a press-fit. It may be helpful to remove the cover of it first, there's a slot where a flat-blade screwdriver can fit and you can take the cover off. Then, come in behind the handle and pry, the handle will pop off.
    The bulb sockets are easily removed by twisting slightly, then they should pull down. To remove the bulb, just grasp it and wiggle it to work it out of the socket; the bulbs are just a press fit.
    I'm replacing mine here with LED bulbs, these happen to be non-polarity bulbs, so they can work either way. To install bulbs (whether plain old incandescents, or LEDs), they simply push into the socket. If you are replacing with polarity-sensitive LEDs, you have a 50-50 shot of getting it right first try. If they don't light up, just remove, turn them around 180° and plug back in.
    Then after the bulbs are replaced, the sockets are reinstalled in the trunk lid. They go in at the same angle they came out, then are twisted to point to the left and right sides of the vehicle, respectively.
    Last thing to do is simply reinstall the trunk lid felt covering. Use the center hole to hold the panel in place. The push-pins simply get pushed into the hole, then press the center button to lock them in place. Reinstall the child safety release handle, and make sure it snaps on, then reinstall its cover.

    Jay, thank you for this video. I just turned 18 and got my first car. My license showed up in the mail 20 minutes before I got pulled over for my tag lights being out. I don't have a job, and only about 10 bucks to my name. So I got me a subway sandwich and some replacement bulbs and did the repair all by myself. Incredibly easy to follow and only took me 30 minutes thanks to you.

    Thank you so much for this! I don’t know much about cars and was told after an oil change that one of my bulbs was dim and needed to be replaced. They quoted me a ridiculous amount for labor. So, I headed on to UA-cam and from there to Walmart for the bulbs and now both lights are shining nice and bright!

    Huh! Yknow I just did my plate bulbs on saturday. I was thinking about filming it. But I couldnt think of a genius plan to cover the plate up. This works. I have some trim peices to replace too. Maybe ill just tape paper over it when i do film that.

      Sounds good. I've seen people use rags, towels, blur it out in post, or just remove the plate entirely.

    Great video. On my 2003 the trunk release is in 2 pieces. There's a slot in the back where you can split it with a flat screw driver and remove the"cap". You can then work the plastic prongs that are holding the actual handle on to the sprocket.

    Something to note since it confused me at first: the clips for the fabric are two parts, the screw and the outer ring it's placed in. You might need to hold the ring in place as you screw. I didn't realize this at first and was confused why I kept turning but it never came out.

      Yes, they have been known to use different fasteners even within the same production run. Sometimes they have a screw head. Sometimes they don't and you have to pry them out. Others have a button in the center. I can only show what my car had.

    2 Millennials were angry that this video was about changing dim lights. Not how to change someone else's car lights because they rammed into their car at 100mph with their BMW, drunk on Starbucks. Because Siri told them take a right, and they took a down, and think just replacing the lights will cover up the damage!
    Very well done! How have these lights held up?

    Hi jaykay18, can you tell me where your sweat band came from? Thank you!
    This will be useful if I ever get this generation of Camry. Seems like an easy enough repair. Glad you replaced the old bulbs, but I wouldn't use cool white bulbs. Just doesn't look right to me.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  3 роки тому +2

      That was a 3-pack set that came with the sweat band and 2 arm bands. No idea where it came from, I think my mother gave it to me years ago. That sweat band is getting pretty worn out. I have a replacement one, but it's plain.
      It's not easy to find "warm white" LED bulbs for automotive. It does look a lot brighter with the cool white bulbs. Wait until the next video...

    • @jaykay18

      It only turns one way to remove the socket, and each side is different, so I cannot tell you clockwise or counterclockwise. You will know, because it will go one way, and not the other. There are TWO choices, that's it. It's not difficult.

  • @russell9304
    @russell9304 2 роки тому

    Your video was good but for my 2002 Camry you need to remove the handle with a 10 mm wrench. Removing it like how you did could damage the assembly. I'd advise others watching to just remove the handle with a 10 mm wrench rather then trying to pry it off with a screw driver.
