  • Take a leisurely stroll around the picturesque Gloucestershire village Eastleach Martin with poet John Betjeman.
Nestling into Gloucestershire's rolling hills alongside the River Leach, the village retains its picture postcard charm today. This is one of 26 travelogues that Betjeman made for Shell's Discovering Britain series in 1955, which saw him venture all around the British Isles. This issue is called Eastleach Martin, Gloucestershire.

“I like going slowly & stopping to stare” a wonderful sentiment.

Line is paraphrased from the poem Leisure by W. H. Davies
What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

It brings tears to my eyes to look at this and compare it to the modern cesspit we now call Britain.

You're not the only one.... I was born in Stroud and live not far from Bristol now, the place I live is just on the edge of the Cotswolds...

He was the master of travel/journey documentaries. He created a calm and beguiling atmosphere through his narration and vocal style.

I went there today, enjoyed the walk so described & a pint in the Victoria.
Beautiful village still to this very day.

I couldn't agree more. I also visited today. Unspoilt tranquility, simply a joy to be there on a spring day. I don't believe the moaners who say England has been spoilt have ever looked.

My grandmother was a Gloucestershire girl - from Dursley. Shen never lost her accent even though she left in her teens to find work in Cardiff. We often returned with her until she died in her 90s.

Well, the churches still stand, and a few of the cottages. But it looks like many more modern houses are in the village. Farmland all around though, and still quaint and isolated enough for a quiet weekend visit.

And now, even though I am 3000 miles from home, I only have to be clever enough to use Google street view to visit Eastleach Martin, and compare it to how it was 60 years ago vicariously of course. Technology can be wonderful.

Interesting that Betjeman narrated this. He was not a fan of motor cars so perhaps the fee was too much of a temptation! A funny little film given that it must have been commissioned as just that - a pretty abstract series of shots filmed by a cameraman which came together in the editing and narration suites. Definitely prefer Betjeman’s railway films in which he appears, but this one is appealing in its own sweet way.
