Something I considered when listening to the dialogue of the Maggie and Dad: The sudden shift in both of their behaviors halfway through (on Caves 1) leads me to think they are from two separate perspectives. Nobody ever thinks they are the bad guy. In the first two sets of dialogue, Maggie is clearly the sane, rational, and tempered person - responding to Dad angrily telling her to “get over the fact” he spent all of their money. He’s yelling the entire time, then leaves with Maggie saying they don’t need him. He leaves because she’s “pushing him.” This is how Maggie tells the story of Dad leaving. This is then followed by two sets of dialogue (bear in mind, after Dad said he would leave) where Dad is the rational one, while Maggie is acting insane. He tries to reason with her, but she keeps acting crazy. Dad reasons that (due to his addictions) he’s harming Isaac more than helping him, and decides to leave. He had no problem with the mother of his child being insane. She begs for him to stay, a complete contrast from the first set of dialogue. This is the perspective of Dad, leaving for a noble reason. My parents were like this when they got divorced. Both recounted that they made no mistakes in the relationship and raising us, and every problem was with the other person, who was insane, selfish, and angry (in their eyes). I don’t think this dialogue is supposed to be Maggie randomly going insane and Dad deciding to stay after the argument where he said he would leave and Maggie all but kicked him out after. This is why Dad left from two perspectives. From Maggie: Dad was a drunk, obsessive gambler who stole money and was setting a horrible example for Isaac. She wanted nothing else from him besides to never see him again. From Dad: Maggie was a brainwashed lunatic who wanted the family to follow her beliefs. Dad loved them both, but realized his addictions were harming Isaac, and had to leave for his good, despite Maggie begging him to stay. Both are not correct in their perspectives, but all Isaac can understand is what his parents tell him. These are the two stories as he understands them.
The thing about the argument is that it feels awfully genuine. There's no straight up "good" or "evil" party. Both assume the role of "victim" and "harasser" at some point in the discussion, which is how most real arguments develop. Both of Isaac's parents talk about and show their respective flaws. Both of them have valid points: Isaac's dad shouldn't have spent the family's savings on gambling, but Isaac's mom bringing religion into the mix again makes her sound insane, as she probably did several times before. Isaac's mom isn't just this fanatical tyrant, she's an overly religious housewife rightfully angry at her husband, who isn't this absent ideal father, but a man that seems tormented by several addictions.
I can’t listen to it without tears swelling up, I’ve heard arguments like this more than I can count on a daily basis for years, it could’ve been far worse but I can say with confidence that this shit is raw

@@uraniumbolt7594maybe they found the characters very personal, and they wanted to act out something very human to a lot of parents and especially kids of divorced parents. The little tyke that they raised actually voiced Isaac after all. It’s not uncommon for families to voice problematic or outright abusive family characters
"Ah ate em, they're gone. Just git over it, Dunkeh!" "What do you mean... What do you mean they're gone... How could you have eaten my parfaits, man?!"
Whatever the outcome you choose to believe in the story, isaac lives, dies, visits dad, whatever, this here paints the duality of characters. Maggy sad and distraught after he left and seeking faith for answers in a crumbling dream of a happy home; the father turning out to be an addict and a drunk to the point of realizing how much harm he was bringing, just a bit too late to turn it around despite how much isaac seemed to be cared for by him.
@@vulcanmemes9770 well it COULD make sense. Like maybe Isaac is doing the storywriting with his father in heaven, or maybe with God since some people seems to doubt isaac's dad make it to heaven
@@vulcanmemes9770 Literally most of the symbolism in this game deals with Isaac coming face to face with his death, from the floors getting more and more disturbing as you keep going down, to the enemies themselves, and especially most of the final boss fights.
This is a really sad situation no matter how you look at it. We know Isaac’s Mother is a poor excuse of a parent but it turns out that his father wasn’t a good person either. Stealing money from his family in the middle of the night and spending it on god knows what, calling his wife crazy when she tries to pray for him, and the “you’re drunk again, aren’t you?” line from Isaac’s mom... you know it’s a bad situation if SHE of all people has a good reason to be angry Even worse, in the legend of bumbo Isaac’s father is actually portrayed as a great dad. He creates stories and games with Isaac, makes toys for/with him out of cardboard, and encourages him to keep his imagination flowing. He was a good father for sure, but a lousy husband, and that’s what caused all of this And when you realize what happened to Isaac, it’s obvious that all of this could have been so easily prevented
Isaac’s father was a terrible person and husband, but he was there for Isaac. It’s honestly heart-wrenching knowing Isaac dies even with his father’s care and partially because of his father’s advice on the power of imagination. Plus, it’s possible Isaac’s father also died (the hanging theory) and that just makes it way way worse.
@@gloriousbeard9054 He was there to play with him. But he was not truly there for him. He spent their entire savings on gambling. He loved him, but he was just as bad a parent as mom was.
Not to mention, bumbo hits so different after completing everything. The coin representing stealing and all. Isaac’s father may not be the best, but it’s clear that Isaac still sees the world in him
@@WadeAlma To be fair, gambling addiction is a disorder that’s very difficult to get out of. It’s possible he still loved his son but he just couldn’t help himself. An aunt developed gambling addiction for a few years but she still very clearly loved me and my cousins deeply. I feel like when the mother was doing that was she said it in a act of angry almost bluffing if you will but to see the father actually leaving she was trying to bring him back
It represents the same story from 2 points of view : the mother saying he was a self-destructive man and that she's better off without him, and the father saying she was insane, but feels sorry for isaac as he's "doing more harm than good" and has to leave. represents pretty well the torment that isaac feels when seeing his family torn apart so much.
I wonder if after all of that happened he moved to his father's house, since apparently Mom and Dad went through the divorce process (Divorce Papers) and the Dogma ending has Isaac and Dad having a conversation as they draw the story
@@blepmaster For what i can get, all the game is just isaacs imagination... where he dies of course, but at the end, everything just seems like a autobiography, a little kid with weird ways to express himself, draw non conventional stuff for kids caused by the influences of his super christian family, i mean, even isaac draws weird stuff, like our man ed
I remember I preordered Repentance the exact day preorders started for it, i was so hyped about what this final dlc would add to the game, and on launch day, when i found this strange door in the depths i immediately scoured the internet for advice on how to enter it, and once i found out and started the ascent to the home floor, my jaw fucking dropped, this scene was so powerful, the music mixed with the heartbreaking voice acting all culminate to make this really emotional scene, i love this scene and i love this game so much
I'm pretty sure Edmund already stated this but I'll say it anyways. You can call the Beast Ending the, "Good Ending" but in reality is a fake. Isaac's imagination led him to believe he has a better happier ending where his parents don't argue, and when his Mother isn't insanely obsessed with Christianity. Guppy being alive and over all a happy life stated by one thing Dad says to Isaac in that ending. "Isaac and his parents lived in a small house on a hill." When in the usual intro it's "Isaac and his Mother lived alone in a small house on a hill."
This leading up towards the "true" ending is an amazing way to bring the game to the neatly wrapped bow that it always deserved. But it hurts when you can relate with some of the things in the game, especially when this hits you in the chest with so much force you're awe struck. Also after checking the credits in Vanilla, Matthias voiced the narrator in that one too! Which I NEVER knew, so the very last "I'm sorry Isaac..." is just the perfect callback (it already was but it's 100x better knowing that Matthias voiced the narrator in vanilla as well)
“Good, leave! We’ll be fine without you!” “Where are you going?! Wait! We NEED you!” If that doesn’t scream abusive and manipulative, I don’t know what does. I feel even less sorry for Isaac’s mom than I already did. I truly believe that she is a monster. Looks like Satan, The Beast, and Dogma played a bigger part in it than anyone thought.
I feel like this entire story brings a side to the story for each member of the family, even if Isaac’s parents are still bad people at the end of the day honestly
If you consider that the mother was being left alone with her son as and the sons father being a raging alcoholic and gambling addict than her reaction seems reasonable. She‘s just as desperate as Isaac is for his family to be whole again. No one is the main villian here.
From the looks of it, it seems like that while Isaac's dad wasn't the best husband, stealing money from his wife's savings and getting drunk, he does seem to at least genuinely care for Isaac, saying in the end how "he was doing more harm than good" and apologizing to Isaac as he left. Now, it's a question of which came first; Isaac's mother's overzealous teachings and demonizing driving Isaac's father to drinking, or Isaac's father's drinking driving the mother to force her religion to try and save him, and letting it consume her identity?
When Edmund himself tells him that his game is "open ended", yes. There is very much a happy ending if you want it to be, if you interpret it that way.
@@Ruffeep Not even. Nothing cements Isaac's death, not even Edmund as he has said everything and the contrary. The final ending (the Beast one) could be interpreted as either Isaac recreating his life story in heaven... or him being in custody at his dad's and playing together. Because that's the thing, the game could very much be a mere metaphor. It's easy for a small kid to blame himself for his parents' problems, and invent a scenario to justify it. Just like how Isaac sees himself as the Devil. But nothing can tell for sure if the game is the sick story of a creative child... Or the real tragedy of a five years old killing himself. And even that last part is wonky because it's not sure if he did it on purpose: Bumbo's last ending seems to indicate that Isaac went to the Chest to play like he used to do with his dad...and locked himself in accidentally But truth be told, the best stories are often up to interpretation.

Honestly its the dads fault, the way the mom talks to him at the middle part, makes me think that she is breaking her sanity because of her own husband getting drunk, why i think the mom called isaac a demon, might be because of the similarity of her husband's stubborn and hardening behavior, When the dad left the mom turned insane so thats probably the reason she calls isaac a demon or smth :hope you understand though:

So, from what I've gathered (I've never played the game), the father wasn't the best man, willing to spend all their hard-earned savings in one go, getting drunk to forget or not have to hear/comprehend his wife's yelling, ect. This caused the mother to try and take some refuge through religion, but her warped view on the world (probably due to past experiences, but let's not lie, having a partner who doesn't seem to care about you or even what happens to your family would darken your view on the world too) led her to eventually become obsessed and further drive her husband away. When he left, she was devastated, and started pushing her delusions on to Isaac harder, and the fact he probably has some family resemblance to the father doesn't make anything better for Isaac. It's a really sad story about a broken, eventually abusive family, and poor Isaac, who's done nothing wrong, is just caught in the middle of it. 😟
I remember seeing theories that Magdalene was Isaac's sister, but i think its not true, since if Repentance literally told the whole lore there should have been some lines from Dads Notes or some drawings in the true ending...
No, his father is very disturbed like the mother, spent all saving with nothing and robber the mom purse is tha bad things, our boy isaac is the child from a bad wedding, this is sad man. :/
@@theequalizer694 It’s worth noting that Maggie’s descent into religious extremism only really happened due to isaac’s dad’s actions and behavior, turning to an abusive, controlling mother after everything in her life was going horrible and looking for any way to improve her life. Really, the arguments presented in this very scene here ends up painting a depiction of a broken family who you can really empathize with anyone in the family. Isaac’s dad is a gambling addict and alcoholic, and left his wife after seeing the damage he was causing to the family, not realizing the consequence of turning away and never looking back. Isaac’s mom is someone who’s life started spiraling out of control, and in her attempts to solve her problems and find comfort in her life, she takes things too far and only ends up creating even worse problems. And we have Isaac, a child born into this family who feels guilty for everything going on in his life, between his parent’s arguments regarding Isaac, his mom’s extremist view, and their eventual split, he sees himself as evil for stuff out of his control.

-This comes to a boiling point when Mom catches Dad stealing money, cue the Ascension dialogue events
-Guppy dies (this doesn’t have a specific date, but it most likely happened pre-divorce)
-Before leaving, Dad tells Isaac to use his imagination to escape from reality, and that he will always be with him in spirit (Bum-Bo true end)
-Isaac becomes increasingly depressed, Mom becomes psychologically (and possibly physically) abusive towards him
-Isaac draws his mom as Mother, she locks him in the closet, thus instilling the idea he’s evil in his mind
-Isaac becomes suicidal and believes he is truly evil and the cause for his parents’ divorce

Isaac dying literally makes no sense and is just edmund spouting drivel
@@vulcanmemes9770 well it COULD make sense. Like maybe Isaac is doing the storywriting with his father in heaven, or maybe with God since some people seems to doubt isaac's dad make it to heaven
@@vulcanmemes9770 Him dying is kinda the theme of the game from the moment Blue Baby is unlocked to the moment the game ends.
@@vulcanmemes9770 Literally most of the symbolism in this game deals with Isaac coming face to face with his death, from the floors getting more and more disturbing as you keep going down, to the enemies themselves, and especially most of the final boss fights.
This is also because the alternative path (Isaac Living) has already been explored.
As Edmund.
I paused the video but it’s still playing
it is sad
This is a really sad situation no matter how you look at it. We know Isaac’s Mother is a poor excuse of a parent but it turns out that his father wasn’t a good person either. Stealing money from his family in the middle of the night and spending it on god knows what, calling his wife crazy when she tries to pray for him, and the “you’re drunk again, aren’t you?” line from Isaac’s mom... you know it’s a bad situation if SHE of all people has a good reason to be angry
Even worse, in the legend of bumbo Isaac’s father is actually portrayed as a great dad. He creates stories and games with Isaac, makes toys for/with him out of cardboard, and encourages him to keep his imagination flowing. He was a good father for sure, but a lousy husband, and that’s what caused all of this
And when you realize what happened to Isaac, it’s obvious that all of this could have been so easily prevented
Isaac’s father may not be the best, but it’s clear that Isaac still sees the world in him
@@WadeAlma
To be fair, gambling addiction is a disorder that’s very difficult to get out of. It’s possible he still loved his son but he just couldn’t help himself. An aunt developed gambling addiction for a few years but she still very clearly loved me and my cousins deeply.
The Alcoholics Anonymous coin item at least proves he was trying to somewhat better himself in some capacity. (not that he succeeded of course)

"Isaac and his parents lived in a small house on a hill."
When in the usual intro it's
"Isaac and his Mother lived alone in a small house on a hill."
friendly reminder that Isaac gets _quite literally_ blinded by Dogma before you get the Epilogue Ending
So, Delirium ending still true ending?
@@fallen9997 yes
As a child of divorce - this path is tough to get through.
Which I NEVER knew, so the very last "I'm sorry Isaac..." is just the perfect callback (it already was but it's 100x better knowing that Matthias voiced the narrator in vanilla as well)
Don't worry guys, he just went to the closest shop to buy some milk.

“Good, leave! We’ll be fine without you!”
“Where are you going?! Wait! We NEED you!”
If that doesn’t scream abusive and manipulative, I don’t know what does. I feel even less sorry for Isaac’s mom than I already did.
I truly believe that she is a monster. Looks like Satan, The Beast, and Dogma played a bigger part in it than anyone thought.
I interpret this less as manipulative behaviour, and more as her being _very_ unstable and emotional.
When she was angry, she likely thought it was just a row and didn't expect him to actually leave. When he did, she was shocked and distraught
This is the magic of issac, YOU make the story's, and YOU make Isaac's happy ending

From the looks of it, it seems like that while Isaac's dad wasn't the best husband, stealing money from his wife's savings and getting drunk, he does seem to at least genuinely care for Isaac, saying in the end how "he was doing more harm than good" and apologizing to Isaac as he left. Now, it's a question of which came first; Isaac's mother's overzealous teachings and demonizing driving Isaac's father to drinking, or Isaac's father's drinking driving the mother to force her religion to try and save him, and letting it consume her identity?
the “I’m sorry isaac” with the flash compression legit never fails to send chills up my spine
I'm sorry, Isaac.
There is no "good ending"
The only ending that exists is that Isaac dies. That's the game.
Nah happiest ending is finding a quarter.
When Edmund himself tells him that his game is "open ended", yes. There is very much a happy ending if you want it to be, if you interpret it that way.
@@aleflippy1997 there are open ended elements and questions, but the bottom like is that Isaac dies.
And even that last part is wonky because it's not sure if he did it on purpose: Bumbo's last ending seems to indicate that Isaac went to the Chest to play like he used to do with his dad...and locked himself in accidentally
But truth be told, the best stories are often up to interpretation.

Honestly its the dads fault, the way the mom talks to him at the middle part, makes me think that she is breaking her sanity because of her own husband getting drunk, why i think the mom called isaac a demon, might be because of the similarity of her husband's stubborn and hardening behavior, When the dad left the mom turned insane so thats probably the reason she calls isaac a demon or smth
