- Sergey Bondarchuk’s restored War and Peace returns to Film at Lincoln Center on May 24. Get tickets: www.filmlinc.o...
This May, we're pleased to announce the return of a new digital restoration of Sergey Bondarchuk’s seven-hour-plus adaptation of Tolstoy’s magnificent novel. Winner of the 1969 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Bondarchuk’s War and Peace sets the changing fortunes of several aristocratic families against the backdrop of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia. On record as the most expensive Soviet film in history (more than $70 million after inflation), it is also perhaps the greatest epic ever made: an exquisite production of spectacle and realism, the political and personal, that endures as a monumental achievement in filmmaking.
A presentation by Mosfilm Cinema Concern. A digital restoration image by image of the picture and sound using a 2K scanner. Producer of the restoration: Karen Shakhnazarov.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center is devoted to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema. The only branch of the world-renowned arts complex Lincoln Center to shine a light on the everlasting yet evolving importance of the moving image, this nonprofit organization was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international film. Via year-round programming and discussions; its annual New York Film Festival; and its publications, including Film Comment, the U.S.’s premier magazine about films and film culture, the Film Society endeavors to make the discussion and appreciation of cinema accessible to a broader audience, as well as to ensure that it will remain an essential art form for years to come.

Fun fact: 15000 people took part in filming of the Borodin battle. 15000!
Fake.
@@WalterWhiteFromTheBlock OH,you mean making a movie?You are right!
And it was filmed on the site of the actual Battle of Borodino. They took down all the telegraph poles (which didn’t exist in 1812) so they wouldn’t interfer with the look.
Any captain can confirm this?
By far the best film adaptation of Tolstoy's great novel, truly a masterpiece in its own right.
Great. No CGI, no FX !! The real thing !!
FX is short for "effects", cannon shots, rifle shots, etc. are all FX. Your statement is false.
@@Ruhrpottpatriot ok. I shall amend it to "digital effects then.
Cannon shots, rifle shots, etc. are all more accurately known as practical effects, which are done on set during filming. The abbriviation FX usually refers to optical effects (or today, digital effects), which of course are done in post production.
not a cellphone in site, just people having fun
CG bad haha I so smart
Those birdseye shots are really something else!
It bothered me that no flying machines exists at that time.
If you don't get a chance to watch the restored War and Peace (1960), you can still find Waterloo (1970) here on UA-cam. Also directed by Bondarchuk, it features similar aerial shots of French cavalry assaulting coalition squares.

@@candidmoe8741 the were tricks...you should watch " making of"...in russian
1965?! It's so crisp and dynamic and rich! Hard to believe it's nearly 55 years old.
It was shot in 70mm which means at the cinema it would have been like watching 8k today but only recently has the technology for HD digital scans of old film been possible for home media
They enhanced it somehow. Great movie anyway.
66 - 67
They didn't "push" the film which in Kubrick films creates grain, so every frame is very noiseless but at the same time suffers a bit of greenish tint in low light.
Finished the book not too long ago, still have not watches this brilliant series despite having seen Bondarchuk’s other masterpiece, Waterloo and loving it. Of course many people began referencing war and peace, reading it again and taking new meanings from it with a certain war that erupted a few years back. This novel never stops reminding us of all that war does to people and societies and to our souls. Tolstoy was a genius
My favourite movie of all time, stunning in its faithfulness to Tolstoy’s eipic novel!

Why don't we have films like this anymore?😢
They replaced it with Superhero movies.
@@denniszenanywhere really sad
@@itsaashish Indeed. In the past movies were considered an art form. I still consider it an art form and prefer not to watch certain superhero movies (the batman series is an exception, because I do think it tackles serious subjects, particularly law and order, politics, etc). Anyway, batman does not really have superpowers, so this helps creators write better stories for it than relying on one's superpower. I don't mean to put down people who watch superhero movies, but I can only take so much of it and I prefer it in comic book form than in celluloid.
We have many beautiful period pieces from the past few years. The Favourite, Peterloo, Macbeth, Son of Saul, Lincoln, etc
denniszenanywhere Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (three hour cut) is the closest superhero films have been to Epic and grand since The Dark Knight.
Natasha dancing with the peasants-- has there ever been such a loving, understanding scene in all filmdom? Yes, probably the best movie I've ever seen. 50+ years ago, college film club, on folding chairs. Didn't realize then that the director also acted Pierre. The best tribute to the Russian soul imaginable.
Don't miss it.
Saw someone say that Infinity War is the type of epic that movies were made for today. Really needed this trailer as a result.
Infinity war is kiddish and narrow.
@@privateauthor7037 like I'm not gonna look down on anyone for enjoying it or any marvel movie in particular... but to say that it's somehow the pinnacle of large scale productions is just insulting.

Still wouldn't hold a candle to productions like Ben-Hur, or Cleopatra, or War and Peace, or Lotr, etc.
Easily one of the greatest if not the greatest film ever made.

Dunno why, but watching this just made me decide to reread the book once again. I'm so indecisive in choosing a most favored book, but this one tops the cake.
The description of Natasha's pure happiness at her first ball is one of the most beautiful passages I have ever read
I think this is the probably the best movie trailer I have ever seen
A masterpiece! We don't have movies like this one anymore.
Absolutely one of the most amazing film experiences I've had. Astoundingly beautiful.
the movie with the greatest battles ever. Can´t wait.
Don't miss this one . And see it on the big screen, the way it's meant to be seen. Its production values alone are awesome.
It would be awesome to see a restored version of this movie! I hope we get to see it here in the U.K.
Managed to get the set of 5 DVDs distributed by Ruscico. It's partly dubbed, partly subtitled in English. `Just spectacular filmmaking.

Dude... this movie looks fucking incredible. Those types of war scenes always get me. A shit ton of extras, dirt, mayhem, confusion, and super crisp cinematography.
Saw the trailer for this before Cold War. Can’t wait!

Cold War?
I saw the director's cut of this film at the Director's Guild Theatre in Los Angeles. As I recall, it was 7 hours and 20 minutes. What an experience. I live in Kansas now and envy those of you who will get to see it. Does anyone know how long this version is?
Tivoly in Kansas City is going to screen this later this spring.
It's broken into 4 parts. Part 1: 2 hrs 20, Part 2: 1 hour 40, Part 3: 1 hour 20, Part 4: 1 hour 40. So 7 hours total.
Did you have to have like three separate intermissions?
421mins. It showed at The Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles. The info is still on their website if you'd like to learn more :+)
.....beautiful work, flavours of craftsmanship that are rare and classic. Glad they restored it. WoW. "They don't make them like they used to". Foreign point of production made a very nice movie.
It looks beautifully restored, hope it comes to Ireland.
The equivalent of 100 million dollars in 1968 money to make this. In other words, Kubrick’s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY nearly ten times over.
I thought it was more like five hundred million.
that is a myth, the movie was way cheaper, less than 100 million of today's money
That's literally propaganda, from actual soviet records it had a cost of 8.3 million rubles or $9.2 million in 1967 dollars, roughly USD$54 million in 2017.
@@HoveringAboveMyself Cost its different in the Soviet Union since there's no real market. They got much of the Army and museums to support the film for very little cost.
@@ezras5422 That is a good point. How do you speculate costs of services that were ordered by the party in a Commmunist state? In the west everything has to be paid for in cash with the occasional favor of course.
WOW!, NO CGI...truly amazing.
I saw the movie when it was released and own the Mosfilm dvd set - the film is brilliant but the prints were always hazy and flawed. The trailer for this new print looks almost too good to be true. I hope it gets wide North American distribution - and as someone wrote - a Criterion release.
Don't hold your breath for that. High brow films went out of style in the USA about the time when Branagh stopped getting his Shakespeare films in the theaters. It would be nice though. Maybe if someone CGI'd a guy in some colorful tights flying around in every other scene, you'd get Americans to watch it! ;-)
The Criterion release was announced for late June and you can preorder it now.
Watched it this past weekend at The Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles. First viewing for me. The print was glorious.

"Пошли девки да покупаться"
Soundtrack was composed by my uncle Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov. He was chosen by director Bondarchuck while still was a student at Moscow Conservatory. He wrote 6 hours of pure music for this film. The Mazurka was written when Vyacheslav was only 9 years old. He was born in Voronezh in 1936. My mom was his middle sister...
There was 3 girls and one boy in the family. All played music instruments, graduated the same musical school.
Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov passed away on February 4, 2020.
He composed a lot a great symphonic music.
Andrey Tarkovsky created few movies with Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov's music. Epic creations.
@@HumanGoodOne Your uncle was a genius. I love his music. I first saw this movie a little over ten years ago thanks to a Russian professor who was fond of Soviet cinema. From the very beginning of the film, the soundtrack absolutely blew me away, and still does.

Fun fact, Napoleon never declared war on a single nation! Every nation he conquered first declared war on France because the nations he conquered were monarchies and they were afraid if France remained a Republic then their citizens would revolt against them eventually
That's one wrong fact. Most of the wars began with the Allies declaring war on France, though they generally justified it as a response to previous French aggression. However, the two most disastrous of Napoleon's wars - the Peninsular War and the invasion of Russia - were both started by him.

If the battles are reinacted on Borodino area, then it being 125 km from Moscow, shpuld make you look at your maps again.
Unfortunately, it looks like this "restoration" wasn't done from the original 2.2 aspect ratio 70mm elements; the trailer's aspect ratio looks to be more like 2.35 aspect ratio anamorphic 35mm. Also, using a 2K scanner for such a finely-detailed spectacle film as this is a bit of a joke, even if all they had access to were 35mm elements. Too bad, it really is a gorgeous film, it deserves better.
The 70mm neg is long lost, this is from a 35mm probably interpos. 2k works for now, Mosfilm probably don't have the budget to do a 4k restoration and they certainly won't recoup the cost.

No I believe that was more the medieval period than the 19th century but they were many likely still bilingual
In the beginning of the novel, the nobility primarily speaks French. As the conflict with Napoleon escalates and the invasion begins, the nobility switches to primarily speaking in Russian in the later parts of the novel.

@@Ugh-Fudge_Bwana Who are you to judge me?
